Mathematics is not about just doing calculations or memorizing complex formulas, but instead an avenue to showcase one's intelligence and ingenuity in solving complex problems to explore concepts unbeknownst to man. Just as mathematics invites us to step into the unknown and expand our horizons, so does this remarkable day for its dear students as they step outside to meet new opportunities and challenges.

PROBLEM: In a farm with some hens and pigs, there are 143 combined heads and 366 combined legs of said animals. How many legs will there be if you doubled the amount of chickens and halved the amount of pigs?

Let x be the number of chickens, and y be the number of pigs
since a chicken has 2 legs while a pig has 2, we could say that 2x + 4y = 366. We could make the same reasoning for the heads, making the equation x + y = 143

2x + 4y = 366
x + y = 143

We need to leave only one variable to find its value. To start, we can multiply the second equation by -2, giving us -2x - 2y = -286
2x + 4y = 366
-2x - 2y = -286

We could now combine both equations, leaving us with 2y = 80, which means y, the number of pigs, is 40.

we can substitute the value of y to either equations to find the value of x.

x + 40 = 143
x = 143 - 40
x = 103

There are 40 pigs and 103 chickens.

Now, to find how many legs there will be if we were to double the amount of chickens and halve the amount of pigs, we could use the equation:

2((2)(103)) + 4 ((1/2)(40)) = total legs
2(206) + 4(20) = total legs
412 + 80 = total legs
492 = total legs

📍 Take note that the problem was given yesterday, January 12 2024.

In order to look for 1989 days ago yesterday, we simply just need to work backwards knowing the current day, number of days in a year (and leap years), and number of days every month.

This problem could be solved in multiple ways, and this is just a provided sample solution.

Starting with January 12, 2024, subtract 12 days to 1989 to go back at the date of December 31, 2023.

1989 – 12 = 1977

Imagine that after subtracting 12 days, we went back to date December 31, 2023 and need to look for the date 1977 days ago. The year 2023, 2022, and 2021 are ordinary years with 365 days, thus we are to subtract 3 years from 1977 days to go back at the date of December 31, 2020.

1977 – 3(365)
1977 – 1095 = 882

Now, we only need 882 days to look for. At the day December 31, 2020, the year 2020 is a leap year. In order to go back at the date of December 31, 2019, we need to subtract 366 days from the remaining 882 days.

882 – 366 = 516

On December 31, 2019, the year 2019 is a regular year with 365 days.

516 – 365 = 151

Now, it is currently December 31, 2018 and our remaining 151 days is less than a year. The only thing to do is to go back considering the days of the months.

151 – 31 days of December = 120 [November 30, 2018]
120 – 30 days of November = 90 [October 31, 2018]
90 – 31 days of October = 59 [September 30, 2018]
59 – 30 days of September = 29 [August 31, 2018]

It is currently August 31, 2018, and going back 29 days from now means 29 days subtracted from 31 days is 2. Therefore, the answer is August 2, 2018.

The day 1989 days ago yesterday is August 2, 2018!✅
