Day 8 of the 2026 WIPO–IPOPHL Summer School focused on Intellectual Property and Sustainable Development, highlighting the role of intellectual property in promoting cultural preservation, environmental sustainability, fair competition, and sound IP management.

Participants gained valuable insights through engaging sessions delivered by Atty. Jeanette A. Florita of the Tanggapang Panlegal ng mga Katutubo sa Pilipinas (PANLIPI), Dr. Emil John Cabrera of the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA), Atty. Maria Karla Rosita Bernardo of Bengzon & Untalan, and Atty. Frederick August Jose of Quisumbing Torres. The discussions explored the protection of indigenous music and cultural expressions, intellectual property and environmental sustainability, unfair competition in emerging markets, and the fundamentals of IP audit.

As the Summer School continues, participants are strengthening their understanding of how intellectual property can support sustainable development while fostering innovation, cultural heritage, and responsible business practices.

Participants engaged in insightful sessions led by Atty. Daniel S. Hofileña of KPH Law, Atty. Reena C. Mitra-Ventanilla of Quisumbing Torres, and Atty. Rhoda Regina Reyes-Rara of MarksPro Philippines. The discussions covered alternative dispute resolution, technology transfer and licensing agreements, practical drafting of licensing agreements for the creative industries, and effective strategies for intellectual property rights enforcement.

Participants gained valuable insights through engaging lectures delivered by Atty. Vida M. Panganiban-Alindogan of the Intellectual Property Association of the Philippines (IPAP), Ms. Mary Jade Roxas-Divinagracia of PwC Philippines, Atty. Felicisimo Agas III of Quisumbing Torres, and Atty. Christopher E. Cruz of De La Salle University. The sessions explored practical strategies for managing intellectual property assets, IP valuation, licensing best practices, and commercialization strategies that help transform innovations into market-ready opportunities.

Day 5 of the 2026 WIPO–IPOPHL Summer School explored the evolving landscape of intellectual property through discussions on emerging trends in IP and their impact on innovation, creativity, and society.

Participants engaged in insightful sessions led by Mr. Paolo Federico Ramos of the Philippine Creative Industries Development Council Secretariat (PCIDCS), Atty. Felicisimo Agas III of Quisumbing Torres, Atty. Oliver Xavier Reyes of Disini Law, and Atty. Jose Maria A. Ochave of Unilab Education Inc. The lectures covered the Philippine Creative Industries Roadmap, intellectual property and emerging technologies, ethical considerations surrounding artificial intelligence, and the intersection of intellectual property and public health in emerging economies.

The day concluded with collaborative research breakout sessions, enabling participants to further refine their research topics while integrating the valuable insights gained from the week's discussions.

Through insightful sessions delivered by Atty. Fatima Mamangon of the Bureau of Patents, Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), Atty. Monica G. Bugayong of Federis & Associates, and Atty. Rowanie A. Nakan, Senior Partner at Cruz Marcelo & Tenefrancia, participants explored the role of patents in driving innovation and economic growth, protecting industrial designs in competitive markets, conducting effective patent searches, and drafting strong patent claims.

The day concluded with an interactive discussion and valuable takeaways that further strengthened participants' understanding of the patent system and its role in fostering innovation, creativity, and sustainable development in emerging economies.
