Publishing research is often more challenging than writing it. To help faculty and researchers prepare manuscripts that meet journal standards, the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“National Research Council of the Philippines (DOST-NRCP), through its RDLead FIRE Program, conducted a scientific writing workshop at Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) Laguna on July 21, 2026.

The one-day intensive session trained 21 faculty members and researchers from LPU campuses in Laguna, Batangas, and Cavite. Participants learned practical techniques to refine draft manuscripts, strengthen research results presentation, and navigate the journal peer-review process.

Happening now: Basic research lays the groundwork for stronger agriculture and food security

NRCP researchers are exploring how basic research can deepen understanding of challenges in agriculture and food security including opportunities for innovation at the 10th NRCP Annual Basic Research Symposium today, August 27.

By examining the underlying conditions, processes, and challenges affecting agriculture, basic research generates the evidence needed to inform policies, strengthen applied research, and guide innovations responsive to realities on the ground.

Speakers from the academe, national government agencies, and NRCP are highlighting how sustained investment in basic research can expand the evidence base for decision-making and contribute to more responsive and resilient agricultural development.

During the morning session, researchers from the NRCP Division of Medical Sciences and Biological Sciences presented four studies addressing concerns in agriculture and food production, including:

โ€ข improved strategies for food safety;
โ€ข farm management approaches to address metal contamination;
โ€ข microbial resistance; and
โ€ข potential sources of sustainable feed supplements.

Beyond presenting the studies, the discussions highlighted research results, recommendations, and good practices that can contribute to addressing challenges in food production, safety, and agricultural resilience. These insights can help inform further research, strengthen agricultural practices, and support evidence-based policies and innovations.

The symposium also features a poster exhibition of 13 NRCP-funded agricultural research projects, providing another platform for researchers to present their work and share research findings.

Join the continuing livestream this afternoon.

Share your questions and insights in the comments as the discussion unfolds. The NRCP Secretariat will relay your queries to the resource persons for discussion.

Not every research question produces an immediate harvest. Some must come first.

For Dr. Wilfredo A. Dumale Jr., a Regular Member of the NRCP Division of Agriculture and Forestry and President of Nueva Vizcaya State University, basic research provides the knowledge needed to understand problems, develop better approaches, and build solutions that can serve agriculture and food systems in the long term.

"That is why we cultivate knowledge. That is why we cultivate collaboration. And that is how we cultivate resilience. Ultimately, that is how we build a food system capable not only of feeding our nation today, but of sustaining generations of Filipinos to come," he shared.

Dr. Dumale Jr. also urged researchers to connect ideas and expertise across disciplines and, importantly, communicate research in ways that support its utilization.

His message set the tone for the 10th NRCP Annual Basic Research Symposium, where researchers and participants are gathered to examine how knowledge generated today can help strengthen Philippine agriculture and food security for the years ahead.

As the countryโ€™s research council, NRCP champions basic research, ensuring that fundamental inquiry becomes the foundation of resilience, innovation, and science that truly serves the Filipino people.

Climate change, pollution, pests, and diseases continue to challenge food production and the sustainability of food systems. Basic research helps uncover the science behind these challenges and provides knowledge that can guide better ways to grow, protect, and sustain the food we need.

Now on its 10th year, the NRCP Annual Basic Research Symposium marks a decade of bringing science closer to society. For the first time, the symposium will be held outside Metro Manila, bringing the conversation to the countryโ€™s agricultural heartland.

Join us on August 27 as the Councilโ€™s researchers discuss how basic research can contribute to more sustainable agriculture and food production at the 10th NRCP Annual Basic Research Symposium, happening at the PhilRice Institute in Maligaya, Science City of Muรฑoz, Nueva Ecija.

Stay tuned for updates.

Research-based knowledge does not have to stay within research spaces. It can reach more teachers and learners through wider educational platforms.

The DOST-NRCP and Knowledge Channel Foundation, Inc. (KCFI) are exploring potential collaboration to bring research-generated knowledge and science resources to more learners.

Proposed collaboration could help expand the reach of NRCPโ€™s research knowledge products and transform them into accessible, relevant, and curriculum-aligned learning resources. This could create more opportunities for research to reach the classroom.

SURIGAO DEL NORTE โ€” Mining companies, government agencies, and community representatives have expressed support for the wider adoption of microbial technology rehabilitation, following promising results from field trials in the province.

At a stakeholdersโ€™ forum hosted by Taganito Mining Corporation on August 12, participants reviewed the impacts of the Greening Mined Areas in the Philippines (GMAP) bioremediation protocol, a program funded by the Department of Science and Technologyโ€“National Research Council of the Philippines (DOSTโ€‘NRCP). Developed by NRCP members and scientists from the University of the Philippines Los Baรฑos, the protocol uses microbial inoculants that have been shown to improve the growth and survival of native trees in minedโ€‘out areas.

Representatives from the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB), national government agencies, and local communities noted that vegetation has successfully thrived in rehabilitated sites, underscoring the potential of scienceโ€‘based solutions to restore degraded landscapes.

Stakeholders also discussed opportunities to integrate the protocol into company practices and policy frameworks beyond the initial research sites.

Forum recommendations are expected to guide the broader application of microbial technology in mine rehabilitation programs, aligning with national efforts to promote sustainable resource management and community welfare.
