- Undertake researches that define the citizenry’s nutritional status, with reference to the malnutrition problem, its causes and effects;

- Develop and recommend policy options,

strategies, programs, and projects which address the malnutrition problem for implementation by appropriate agencies; and

- Diffuse knowledge and technologies in food and nutrition and provide S&T services to relevant stakeholders

The FOOD AND NUTRITION RESEARCH INSTITUTE:

- Regularly monitors the nutritional status of the population with particular reference to food consumption and type and extent of malnutrition and its causes;

- Conducts R& D and recommends policy options programs and projects towards improvement of the nutritional status of the populations;

- Transfers food and nutrition technologies it generates and disseminates scientific information to relevant users;

SCIENCE&TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Consultancy

Consultancy services are rendered in the field of food and nutrition. FNRI scientists and researchers serve as speakers/trainors on nutrition and allied activities of both the public and private sectors. Contract/Joint Research

FNRI provide research services and facilities to private/government firms wishing to improve their products and answer research problems. Library

Library facilities are available. Literature and retrieval search through internet and referral services to its network members and other clients are also being done. On-the-job training to student librarians upon request is accommodated. Food Demonstration

Nutritious and economical recipes are transferred through food demonstrations, lectures, and distribution of print materials to interested parties. Technology Business Incubation (TBI) Facility

Support to small and medium scale entrepreneurs wishing to start a food processing enterprise using technologies developed by the Institute. The services include lease of equipment at nominal cost, training of production staff, technical assistance, and consultancy services in production and quality control of product and in setting up of own processing plant. Food Analytical Service Laboratory (FASL)

An ISO/IEC 17025 certified laboratory offers evaluation of the quality (energy and nutrient contents) and safety analyses (toxicological/mycotoxin and microbial pathogens) of food. Biochemical Assessment Service Laboratory (BASL)

The only laboratory in the Philippines capable of determining serum/plasma retinol and urinary iodine excretion (UIE) levels. Proficiency Testing Laboratory (PTL)

The first accredited Philippine food proficiency testing provider. It provides PT participants with seminar-workshop, trainings/consultations to improve laboratory performance and promote continual development. Cereal Chemistry Laboratory

The Cereal Chemistry Laboratory is the first laboratory within the DOST, specifically designed for the characterization and quality control of various types of flour and other baking products. FNRI Nutrigenomics Laboratory (FNL)

The promise of Nutrigenomics is that with a deeper molecular understanding of nutrition we may someday be able to design diets and develop functional food products that truly maximize an individual’s potential for health and wellness. Diet Counseling/Wellness Clinic

The Institute renders dietary counseling to staff and outside clientele regarding dietary management of heart diseases, diabetes, reducing diets and other nutrition-related diseases. Food and Nutrition Database and Applications

Online databases of nutrition survey results, food consumption, abstract of researches, and food and nutrition application softwares are developed and made available to all its clientele


Recipe Development and Sensory Evaluation

Nutritious and economical recipes using indigenous materials are developed. New food products developed by industry are evaluated as to their organoleptic quality and acceptability. Training

Specialized courses in food and nutrition are offered and conducted. IEC Materials and other Publications

The DOST-FNRI welcomed representatives from the DOST-Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) Samar and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Catbalogan City on May 21, 2026, during their Research and Development Institute (RDI) facility visits and knowledge-exchange activities under the Smart and Sustainable Cities Program (SSCP), in preparation for the upcoming Regional Smart Communities Exposition and Networking Engagement (rscENE) 2026.

During the visit, the DOST-FNRI presented the highlights of the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) for Region VIII and DOST-FNRI-developed and transferable food technologies, followed by a tour of the Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (SEL).

The activity provided valuable insights on nutrition research, food innovation, and science- and technology-based interventions that may support local development and promote sustainable growth in Catbalogan City.

𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗧𝗢𝗦: Recognizing the vital role of safe food handling in the food service industry, the DOST-FNRI conducted face-to-face trainings on Meal Management and Safe Food Handling for the staff of The Manila Hotel and Manila Prince Hotel on May 19 and 25, 2026, respectively.

The trainings formed part of the hotels’ annual commitment to strengthening food safety practices and improving meal management operations. Participants, composed of chefs, food and beverage managers, waiters, service crew, and receiving personnel, were equipped with essential knowledge and practical skills on proper food handling, sanitation, and food safety measures to help ensure the delivery of safe and high-quality food service to customers.

Dahil sa taglay nitong mga sustansya, ang avocado ay maaaring maging bahagi ng masustansya at balanseng pagkain na sumusuporta sa maayos na kalusugan.

Kaya sa usaping masustansyang pagkain, malinaw na ang avocado ay hindi lang basta masarap na meryenda, kundi isang prutas na may ambag sa mas malusog na pangangatawan.

Meet Sharmaine, o mas kilala bilang “Orange”, isang citrus fruit na siksik sa mga bitamina at mineral na mahalaga para sa malakas na pangangatawan at resistensya.

𝙈𝙖𝙮 𝙨𝙖𝙠𝙞𝙩, 𝙡𝙖𝙜𝙣𝙖𝙩, 𝙤 𝙨𝙞𝙥𝙤𝙣? 𝙋𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜 ‘𝙙𝙞 𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙮𝙖𝙩𝙖 𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙖𝙣𝙜 𝙗𝙞𝙧𝙤 𝙮𝙖𝙣, 𝙢𝙖𝙧𝙚.🤒

Ngayong rainy season, parami nang parami ang mga Pilipinong nakararanas ng lagnat, ubo't sipon, pananakit ng ulo, at trangkaso dahil sa pabago-bagong panahon.

Upang makatulong na maiwasan ang mga sakit, mahalagang palakasin natin ang ating katawan at resistensya. Pero huwag mag-alala, dahil nandyan si Sharmaine para samahan tayo ngayong tag-ulan!

Si Sharmaine ay mayaman sa 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗖. Ang isang pirasong orange ay karaniwang naglalaman ng 62 mg ng Vitamin C, sapat upang matugunan ang Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI) ng Filipino adults na 60-70 mg kada araw.

Ang 𝗩𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻 𝗖, o 𝗔𝘀𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗯𝗶𝗰 𝗔𝗰𝗶𝗱, ay isang mahalagang bitamina na tumutulong sa pagpapalakas ng ating immune system. Nakatutulong ito sa paggawa at maayos na paggana ng mga white blood cells na lumalaban sa impeksyon. Pinoprotektahan din nito ang ating mga cells laban sa pagkasira at tumutulong upang mapanatili ang kakayahan ng katawan na labanan ang mga mikrobyo at virus na sanhi ng mga sakit. Bukod dito, nakatutulong din ang Vitamin C sa mas mahusay na absorption ng iron sa katawan.

Hindi lang Vitamin C ang hatid ni Sharmaine. Ang orange ay naglalaman din ng iba pang nutrients tulad ng fiber, folate, at antioxidants na mahalaga para sa pangkabuang kalusugan at nutrisyon.

Bukod kay Sharmaine, may iba pang prutas at gulay na mayaman sa Vitamin C tulad ng papaya, bayabas, calamansi, broccoli, red bell pepper, at iba pang mga berdeng at madahong gulay.

🤏𝗦𝗼𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗹𝗶𝗶𝘁, 𝘀𝗼𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗶𝗽𝗶𝗰𝗵!
Kumpul-kumpol kung mangitlog ang langaw (umaabot sa halos 300 na itlog kada pangingitlog). At mahirap makita ang mga ito dahil umaabot lamang sa humigit-kumulang 1.2 mm ang kanilang laki.

Dagdag pa rito, ang mga itlog ng langaw ay kadalasang puti o dilaw at nagmimistulang mga maliliit na butil ng bigas. Mula sa pangingitlog, napipisa ang mga ito sa loob lamang ng isang araw (lalo na sa mga maiinit at 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘥 na lugar).

Kung kakain sa labas, kilatisin ang pagkain lalo na kung matagal itong naiwan na walang takip. Upang maiwasan ang pagkasira at pag-aaksaya ng pagkain sa tahanan, panatilihing nakatakip ang pagkain, bawasan ang sobrang 𝘮𝘰𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 sa paligid, at regular na linisin ang mga kanal at basurahan.
