Project PEACE to scale up the lives of Citronella growers in CamNorte

Camarines Norte – Being an agricultural town of Camarines Norte with 70% land area, farming is one of the leading livelihoods of the people of Labo. Its major produce are coconut, pineapple and citronella grass.

Anita Flores, 56, has been growing and harvesting citronella grass for 30 years in the village of Canapawan in Labo town. She has been an active member of then association of Citronella farmers since 1991 until it became a registered cooperative – Kooperatiba ng Maliit na mga Magniniyog ng Barangay Kanapawan (KMMBK) in 2014.

With her earnings from the cooperative and his husband’s support as a sewer, the couple was able to send their children to college who are now professionals in their chosen careers.

To further improve the lives of Citronella growers like Flores, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Bicol, thru its Camarines Norte Provincial Office, awarded a livelihood enhancement project entitled, “Productivity Enhancement on Aromatic Citronella Extract – Project PEACE” amounting to P398,741 to KMMBK for the purchase of tools, equipment, and materials used in the processing of Citronella Oil and its by-products.

KMMBK is one of the Sustainable Livelihood Framework groups assisted by the Department to which the office has granted an oil extracting machine for their Citronella Oil venture in 2014.

Project PEACE is a pro-active approach by the Department to scale up their production and sales which proved to be truly advantageous to its 50 direct beneficiaries.

The enhancement project will fund the purchase of additional equipment and tools to expedite the production process without compromising the quality of Citronella Oil, Citronella Soap, Citronella Insect Repellant Lotion and Citronella Massage Oil as well as the safety of the workers. Moreover, sales are expected to increase as the market for said of the products continue to grow.

The said beneficiaries were indeed tremendously grateful and committed to mak ethe project a success.

Right after the awarding of check, an orientation as regards the timely liquidation process was done. A copy of the Memorandum of Agreement was likewise handed over to the cooperative.

Regional Director Ma. Zenaida A. Angara-Campita said that with this kind of perseverance and commitment shown by the beneficiaries to sustain their livelihoods, the government is more grateful for the success of each member of the group and they indeed deserve the livelihood enhancement package from DOLE.
