PJS Issue: For the first time, a study documents the presence of deformed wing virus (DWV) in Philippine apiariesโdetected in both adult honeybees and Varroa mites in NCR and brood samples in Batangas. Genetic analysis confirms strong similarity to known DWV strains, highlighting its role in honeybee health and colony decline globally.
While other major bee viruses were not detected, the findings provide the first local baseline on DWV occurrence in the countryโcrucial information for strengthening bee disease monitoring, apiculture management, and food security efforts.
