Araw ng Kagitingan 2026 | Lakad Kalayaan

β€œOn this Day of Valor, we honor the courage and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers who fought for our freedom during World War II”.

The 3rd Regional Community Defense Group (3RCDG), led by Col. Mario Lito I. Retirva, together with the reservists from the seven (7) Community Defense Centers, joined the commemoration of the 84th Araw ng Kagitingan through the Lakad Kalayaan (Freedom March).

More than a walk, Lakad Kalayaan is a tribute to the enduring spirit of kagitinganβ€”a reminder that bravery, unity, and patriotism live on in every Filipino.

As we move forward together, may we continue to honor their legacy by protecting the freedom they fought for and embodying courage in our daily lives.

The Reserve Command (RESCOM), Philippine Army joins the entire nation in the solemn observance of Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor).

Today, we honor the gallantry of the heroes of Bataan and Corregidor, whose selfless sacrifice paved the way for the freedoms we cherish today. Their legacy of courage is the very foundation upon which our citizen-army stand.

By April 1942, following the rapid fall of key Allied positions in Southeast Asia, Japanese forces had expanded their control across the region, marking a decisive phase in the early Pacific War. After the surrender of Singapore in February, Japan continued its advance, securing strategic territories in Burma (Myanmar) and the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), both vital for their resources and supply routes.

In Burma, Japanese forces pushed forward and captured major areas, effectively cutting the Burma Road and disrupting Allied support to China. Meanwhile, in the Dutch East Indies, Japan gained control of critical oil fields and natural resources that were essential to sustaining its war efforts. With organized resistance largely broken, Japan established military administrations across occupied territories.

Beneath the shifting tides of war, Southeast Asia entered a new era of foreign occupation, as Japan tightened its hold over the region and prepared its defenses across newly seized lands.

"The rear area has become the front... Blood is flowing freely."

On this day in 1942, Lt. Felipe Buencamino III recorded the harrowing collapse of the lines in Bataan. His diary paints a visceral picture of the "bleeding men"β€”the remnants of the Filipino-American forces who electrified the world with their stand, even as malaria, hunger, and relentless shelling took their toll.

As we prepare for Lakad Kalayaan this April 9, we read these words not just as history, but as a testament to the cost of our sovereignty. We walk because they could no longer stand. We remember so that their "glorious stand" never fades into silence.
