PRESS RELEASE from DOST-PAGASA
Quezon City, 23 September 2026
DOST-PAGASA warns of an intensifying Very Strong El Niño through the first half of 2027.
A Strong El Niño is currently active in the Tropical Pacific and is expected to intensify into a Very Strong El Niño between September to December 2026, potentially persisting through the first half of 2027.
For the Philippines, this may bring warmer temperatures and below-normal rainfall, increasing the risk of dry spells, drought, and water supply stress that could affect agriculture, food security, energy, public health, and the economy.

Essential Tips to Stay Safe:
Health and Heat Protection
• Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
• Avoid peak sun exposure: Stay in the shade and limit strenuous outdoor activities between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. when the heat is most intense.
• Adjust schedules: Shift heavy outdoor work or school hours to the early morning or late afternoon to avoid high temperatures.
• Protect your skin: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and apply sunscreen when going outside.
• Prevent vector-borne diseases: Practice the Department of Health's 5S strategy to search and destroy mosquito breeding sites and prevent dengue.
Water Conservation
• Fix leaks immediately: Check all pipes, faucets, and toilets for dripping water and repair them to prevent waste.
• Reuse water: Collect rainwater or use runoff water from washing dishes or produce for non-potable needs like cleaning or watering resilient plants.
• Modify daily habits: Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth, take shorter showers, and use a cup to rinse.
• Store emergency supply: Keep clean, covered containers with an emergency supply of drinking water (at least 1 gallon per person per day).
Agricultural and Food Resilience
• Plant drought-resistant crops: Consider switching from water-heavy crops like rice to resilient alternatives such as cassava, sweet potatoes, or corn.
• Retain soil moisture: Use mulch, keep leaf litter, and build shade hedges around plants to reduce wind drying and retain soil moisture in home gardens.
• Monitor local advisories: Stay updated with alerts from PAGASA regarding water allocations and weather shifts.
