Soil nutrients are important for healthy plant growth. Every year, losses of soil nutrients occur through soil erosion, runoff, leaching, and burning of crop residues.

However, we have 6 actions to prevent and reverse nutrient imbalances.

1. Judicious use of fertilizers.
2. Soil nutrient measurement and mapping
3. Crop diversification and pulses.
4. Adequate use of micronutrients.
5. Enhance technical support to farmers
6. Adopt long-term sustainable soil management.

You may visit www.bswm.da.gov.ph for more information on the DA-BSWM's actions to prevent and reverse nutrient imbalances.

“The youth have so much potential, but to be able to realize that, we really have to be more focused on the capability-building.”

This is how Kaiser Christoffer D.C. Del Valle, the incumbent 4-H Provincial Federation President in Northern Samar, sees how the younger generation can be more involved in the agriculture sector.

As a 4-H President, he also mentioned the importance of joining youth organizations as it helps in building good values, networks, and leadership skills at a young age.

The young farmer shared that during his stint, he was able to secure the support of the Sangguniang Kabataan, through the Provincial Youth Summit, for the conduct of several 4-H activities such as the provision of farm inputs, technical advisory, and field monitoring, among others.

Kaiser is one of the participants in the Design Thinking Workshop conducted by the Agricultural Training Institute early this month.

The goal of the activity is to build on the ideas of the youth so they may be able to operationalize and implement their agricultural projects in their respective areas. During the workshop, his pitch is to transform and rebrand the image of agriculture for the younger generation.

“We need to be transformative and equip them with knowledge since times are changing and so are the youth,” he said.

He cited that Design Thinking and other creative and collaborative approaches for training are some good ways to connect with the youth.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources joins the observance of the International Lead Poisoning Prevention Week 2022 with the theme, "SAY NO TO LEAD POISONING". This campaign takes place from October 23-29, 2022.

The focus of this year’s week “Say no to lead poisoning” recognizes the additional urgency of action needed to eliminate all sources of lead exposure.

2022 will mark 10 years of action to eliminate lead paint, for a healthier world free of lead, resulting in 88 countries (45%) having established legally binding controls on the production, import, sale, and use of lead paints.

Women are advised to eat plenty of folate-rich foods during pregnancy. Folate is essential for the optimal growth and development of your child.
However, most women don’t get enough folate, which has been linked to a higher risk of birth defects.

Mung beans provide 80% of the RDI for folate in one cooked cup (202 grams). They’re also high in iron, protein and fiber, of which women need more during pregnancy. However, pregnant women should avoid eating raw mung bean sprouts, as they may carry bacteria that could cause an infection. Cooked beans and sprouts should be safe.
