DOST 02 Renews Partnership with CPLRC
The Cagayan Provincial Learning and Resource Center (CPLRC) receives an updated version of Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS (STARBOOKS) today March 20, 2024 from DOST 02. Mr. Carl Joshua Reyes & Mr. Romeo Puyat, STARBOOKS focal persons, installed & conducted orientation among the librarians in CPLRC. DOST 02 and CPLRC aim to encourage great and curious minds among the rising generation to develop innovations and love of reading and acquiring knowledge.

The STARBOOKS contains hundreds of thousands of digitized science and technology resources that students, researchers, teachers, and visitors can access through CPLRC e-library. Visit DOST 02 and CPLRC to learn more about STARBOOKS.

In a significant step towards reviving the salt industry in Sanchez Mira, a Round Table discussion was held on January 10, 2024, bringing together various agencies, community leaders, and the DOST Cagayan. The primary goal was to assess the opportunities and challenges surrounding salt production in the area, with a focus on reinstating traditional methods while incorporating modern technologies.

Engr. Jayferson D. Mabborang, OIC-Provincial Director of PSTO Cagayan, represented DOST in the discussion. He shared significant insights on how DOST programs can contribute to the revitalization of the salt industry. Notable technologies presented included the Salt Iodization Machine, Salt Washer, Salt Spin Dryer, and Salt Processing Equipment under the i-Salt Project. These innovations aim to enhance efficiency and productivity in salt-making.

During the meeting, the commitment of DOST is to conduct water salinity testing in collaboration with local authorities. The test results, falling within an acceptable range, highlights the potential for successful salt production in Sanchez Mira. Mayor Abraham Bagasin and Sanchez Mira tourism officer Ms.Carla Ocampo actively participated in the testing process conducted on January 31, 2024.

This emphasizes the action taken during the round table discussion, showcasing the commitment of DOST to support the local salt industry. Collaboration between agencies and the community is highlighted as significant for strengthening and empowering Sanchez Mira's economic prospects.

STARBOOKS Illuminate Gabut Integrated School in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Barangays

With the initiative to narrow the knowledge gap and promote science and technology literacy in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged (GIDA) barangays, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has been actively awarding Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated Kiosks (STARBOOKS). Among the deserving recipients is Gabut Integrated School, a beacon of education in a remote and marginalized community.

Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged (GIDA) barangays often face challenges in accessing quality educational resources, hindering the overall development of the community. Recognizing this disparity, the DOST introduced STARBOOKS, a digital library that provides a wealth of science and technology information, enabling students and residents in these areas to access cutting-edge knowledge.

The awarding of STARBOOKS to Gabut Integrated School marks a significant milestone in the efforts to bring educational resources to underserved communities. IP Community (Indigenous People) receives STARBOOKS from DOST 02

DOST 02 awards Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly Operated KioskS (STARBOOKS) in Aridowen Integrated School of Sta. Teresita, Cagayan. The project will introduce science, mathematics, investigatory projects, research, learning videos and livelihood videos among students, teachers, and parents. The school is in an IP community (Indigenous People) in Brgy. Aridowen, Sta. Teresita Cagayan.
The project will empower the beneficiaries specially on science and technology. Dr. Princess Unabia, principal of the school said; "We will use the STARBOOKS and introduce them to all our students, we know this will help us increase our PISA score in science and mathematics". The award ceremony was also attended by Mr. J***y Corpuz, Brgy. Captain of Aridowen and the chieftain of the IP community last January 29, 2024.

PSTO Cagayan: In today's rapidly evolving business landscape, technology plays a pivotal role in determining the success and sustainability of firms across industries. Conducting a thorough Technology Needs Assessment (TNA) is imperative for organizations seeking to leverage technological advancements, enhance operational efficiency, and stay ahead in the competitive market.

PSTO Cagayan Team led by Mr. Benjamin L. Nicdao II together with Engr. Ferdinand Michael B. Magusib, conducted technology needs assessment (TNA) to Ms. Tessie Cuntapay and Ms. Geraldine Geneva D. Ferrer owners of Tessie Cuntapay Food Products and F Digital Prints and Design respectively. Both firms are adoptors and already graduated from their Phase I of Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) assistance of the department.

The visit aimed to assess the technology requirements of the businesses and explore potential areas of improvement. The firms expressed their interest to apply for another round of support from DOST thru SETUP. Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) is a nationwide strategy that encourage and assists MSMEs to adopt Technology Innovations to improve their operations and thus boost their productivity and competitiveness. Currently, the DOST prioritizes MSMEs in food processing, furniture, gifts, handicrafts and decors, agriculture/marine/aquaculture, metals and engineering, pharmaceuticals, health and wellness products, and ICT/electronics.

DOST Provincial Science and Technology Office (PSTO) Cagayan OIC-Provincial Director, Engr. Jayferson D. Mabborang, and Ms. Elise Marie Lucas conducted an assessment to LGU Claveria Abaca Fiber Industry. The group includes Abaca Farmers and weavers in the production of Abaca Fibers which is utilized by Claveria Handicrafts Association in Producing Abaca Fiber by products such as baskets, tote bags, planters, plate mats, shopping bags, wine bags, and floor carpets as the One Town, One Product (OTOP) of LGU Claveria. The evaluation aimed to identify areas for improvement in the quality and marketability of local products.

During the assessment, the team emphasized the DOST's commitment to support by providing technical assistance such as trainings, consultancies, and acquisition of production. This initiative aligns with DOST's goal of empowering local entrepreneurs and promoting economic development.

Reviving Sanchez Mira's Salt Industry: Exploring Opportunities for Tradition and Innovation

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) R02 represented by PSTO Cagayan OIC-Provincial Director Engr. Jayferson D. Mabborang attended the Round Table discussion on Salt Development of Sanchez Mira. People involved, including community leaders and relevant agencies, gathered to understand the opportunities and challenges in salt production in the area. The meeting aimed to explore the viability of bringing back the traditional way of making salt in Sanchez Mira and introducing new technologies to improve the industry.

Engr. Mabborang presented the DOST programs that can help the Salt Industry. He also presented different DOST develop technologies such as Salt Iodizing Machine, Salt Washer, Salt Spin Dryer, and Salt Processing Equipment (i-Salt Project). DOST is committed to render technical services to help attain the objective of the proposed project.

DOST 02, PSTO-Cagayan: Nagbigay ng Aplikasyon para sa PSHS Scholarship sa mga Malalaking Paaralan ng Elementarya sa Lungsod ng Tuguegarao

Ngayong Setyembre 2023, nagsagawa ang mga kawani ng DOST 02, PSTO-Cagayan ng pagbisita sa sampung (10) elementarya sa Lungsod ng Tuguegarao upang magbahagi ng mga aplikasyon para sa Philippine Science High School (PSHS).

Ang nasabing scholarship ay bukas para sa mga kasalukuyang nasa Grade 6. Kasama sa mga benepisyo nito ang libreng matrikula, libreng mga libro, buwanang stipendyo, uniporme, transportasyon, at allowances para sa mga pamilyang may kakulangan sa kita, at libreng tuluyan kung kinakailangan.

Ang pagbisita ng mga kawani ng DOST ay pinagtibay ng mga punong-g**o at mga g**o sa mga paaralang kanilang binisita. Bukod dito, ibinahagi rin ng mga kinatawan ng DOST ang iba pang mga serbisyong pang-edukasyon tulad ng STARBOOKS, mga proyektong pang-agham, at iba pa. Ipinamahagi din nila ang mga kinakailangang dokumento para sa aplikasyon sa PSHS at nagbigay ng mahalagang impormasyon tungkol sa programa.

Hindi lamang ito isang pagkakataon para sa mga estudyante, kundi pati na rin para sa mga g**o upang mapanatili ang mataas na kalidad ng edukasyon sa Lungsod ng Tuguegarao. The Department of Science and Technology Office 02 through the Provincial Sciences and Technology Office Cagayan, headed by the Office-in-charge, Provincial Director, Engr. Jayferson D. Mabborang with District Officer Mr. Benjamin Nicdao II, conduct the first meeting with the Municipal Science and Technology Action Group (MSTAG) of the Local Government Unit of Rizal, Cagayan.

The meeting was attended by the heads of the different departments of LGU Rizal, school officials, and NGO representatives. PSTO Cagayan presented the DOST Programs and Projects to the group at the same time discussed the duties and functions of the MSTAG Group.

Furthermore, PSTO Cagayan visited Brgy. Nanauagan to discuss the training they requested on mushroom production.
