Secretary Renato Solidum Jr. of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) encouraged Region 1 government leaders to invest in resilience in his keynote message during the ALERTO REHIYON UNO: Forum on Geological Hazards in Region 1 on July 20, 2023, at the Provincial Training and Development Center 2, Lingayen, Pangasinan.
โInvesting in resilience is an opportunity. For local government leaders, reducing disaster risk can be a legacy opportunityโpaying attention to protection will improve environmental, social, and economic conditions, including combating the future variables of climate change, and leave the community more prosperous and secure than before,โ Solidum said. He encouraged them to prioritize resilience as part of their sustainable development agenda.
Solidum pointed out the three key messages: Understanding the risk, especially in Region 1; Strengthening Disaster Risk Governance to Manage Disaster Risks; and Investing in disaster risk reduction for resilience. He also said that the DOST has developed, funded, and supported various technologies and innovations covering the dimensions of resilience such as early warning systems and committed to support research and development.
ALERTO! REHIYON UNO: Forum on Geological Hazards in Region 1 is an initiative of the DOST 1 to instill awareness of Geological Hazards and carefully plan to avoid adverse impacts to the community as part of the 2023 National Disaster Resilience Month.
Pangasinan Governor Ramon A. Guico III represented by Hon. Von Mark M. Mendoza, Special Assistant to the Governor of Pangasinan, said in his message that part of the master plan of the province is strengthening the disaster risk reduction management (DRRM) plan which will play a significant role in the delivery of good governance. He also expressed his gratitude to the DOST for choosing Pangasinan as their partner which plays a significant role in the regional events of the DOST.
The significant event was attended by DOST Undersecretary Teodoro M. Gatchalian, Pangasinan State University (PSU) President Elbert M. Galas, Director Lita F. Suerte Felipe of DOST- Department of Legislative Liaison Office (DLLO); DOST 1 Officer-in-Charge Dr. Teresita A. Tabaog, Regional Directors and representatives of the national government agencies in region 1, Malasiqui Mayor Noel Anthony M. Geslani, Urbiztondo Mayor Modesto M. Operania, local government representatives, DRRM heads, staff and media partners in Pangasinan.
Technologies of the Provincial DRRMO of Pangasinan and Ilocos Sur, and DOST- Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (DOST-PHIVOLCS) were showcased in the exhibits.
DOST-PHIVOLCS presented their major programs and innovations; Earthquake hazards and their impact; Tsunami Hazards; and GeoRiskPH.
The forum is in partnership with the Provincial Government of Pangasinan and Pangasinan State University.
