In celebration of Womenโ€™s Month with the theme โ€œLead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas,โ€ Pauline Jade Avelino embodies the quiet yet powerful strength of a modern Filipina who leads with discipline, resilience, and purpose.

At a young age, Pauline carried the responsibility of helping support her family as a breadwinner. These early challenges shaped her perseverance and determination, eventually guiding her to become a Nutritionist-Dietitian and an accomplished endurance athlete.

One of the most remarkable milestones in her athletic journey was becoming the Overall Female Champion of the Camsur 100 Miles (165 km) Ultramarathon, one of the most grueling endurance races in the country. Completing this extraordinary distance requires not only physical strength but also exceptional mental endurance, discipline, and resilience.

Beyond this achievement, Pauline has also earned numerous victories in endurance races across the Philippines, including being Overall Female Champion in the Philippine Marine Corps Ultramarathon 50 km, Peรฑafrancia Marathon 42 km, Philippine Marine Marathon 42 km, and the Abaca Ultramarathon 50 km in Catanduanes, among many other competitions.

Despite balancing the demands of her profession and athletics, Pauline believes that true strength is not only about pushing forward but also about recognizing the importance of rest and self-care. For her, rest is not a sign of weakness but an essential part of growth and renewal.

Through her work in health education and endurance sports, Pauline inspires others to care for their physical and mental well-being while pursuing their dreams with courage and determination.

Like the Babaylans of old, she leads not only through achievement but through the wisdom and empowerment she shares with others.
As Pauline reminds us:

In celebration of Womenโ€™s Month with the theme โ€œWE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Societyโ€ and sub-theme โ€œLead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas,โ€ we recognize the inspiring journey of Maria Gina Z. Ogalinola, 65, a dedicated public servant from Brgy. Del Pilar, Viga, Catanduanes.

Life was not easy for Gina. Growing up in hardship, she was not able to finish her education, even though she once dreamed of becoming an engineer. But instead of giving up, she turned her struggles into strengthโ€”choosing to build a better future for her family.

As a mother of three, she worked hard to ensure that her children would achieve the dream she once hadโ€”to finish their education. Today, her sacrifices are bearing fruit: one child has already graduated from college, another is about to finish, and her youngest is currently in college.

Her dedication to service extended beyond her family. From 2007 to 2013, she served as a Barangay Kagawad, and from 2013 to the present, she continues to serve as a three-term Punong Barangay, a testament to the trust and confidence of her community.

For Gina, leadership is not easyโ€”but it is fulfilling. Despite the challenges that come with public service, she remains committed, seeing every experience as an opportunity to inspire others, especially fellow women.

In celebration of Womenโ€™s Month with the theme โ€œWE for Gender Equality and Inclusive Societyโ€ and sub-theme โ€œLead Like the Babaylans, Filipinas,โ€ we honor the inspiring story of Maria Cristina Conda, a 46-year-old businesswoman from Brgy. San Vicente, Viga, Catanduanes, whose journey reflects perseverance, determination, and leadership grounded in strong values.

While pursuing her Bachelor of Secondary Education at the University of Makati and a Diploma Course in Entrepreneurship, Cristina worked part-time in restaurants to support herself and help her family. These early experiences taught her the value of hard work, sacrifice, and determinationโ€”lessons that would later shape the life she built in Viga.
Together with her husband, Ariel Conda, Cristina began nurturing a dream of building something meaningful for their family. Through patience, resilience, and countless sacrifices, they slowly established Villa Amacepia Resort, a business that stands today as a symbol of their perseverance and faith in their dreams.

For Cristina, her greatest strength has always been her family and children, who inspire her to continue moving forward despite lifeโ€™s challenges. She believes that leadership is not defined only by achievements, but by the values a person lives by every day. As she often reminds others,

This belief guides how she lives her lifeโ€”as a mother, a businesswoman, and a member of the community. Cristina strives to lead through simple but meaningful actions: showing respect to others, following rules that maintain peace and order, and extending help to those in need. She hopes that by doing so, she can inspire the younger generation to become responsible and compassionate members of society.

She also strongly advocates for the protection and empowerment of women, believing that every woman deserves to live in safety, dignity, and with opportunities to grow. For Cristina, empowering women means creating a community where womenโ€™s voices are heard, their rights are protected, and their contributions are valued.

Through her journey, Cristina embodies the spirit of a modern Filipina Babaylanโ€”a woman who leads with courage, wisdom, and compassion.

Her story reminds us that true leadership is not always loud or grand. Sometimes, it is found in quiet determination, in the courage to keep building dreams, and in the commitment to uplift others along the way.

A story of resilience, sacrifice, and unwavering purposeโ€”proving that where you start does not define where you can go. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿ’–

Growing up in a family of ten siblings, she learned early in life the value of hard work and perseverance. With a mother who was a housewife and a father who worked as a laborer and farmer, life was not easy. To help her family, she sold fish, helped in farming, and took on different small jobsโ€”while holding on to her dream of becoming a lawyer.

Determined to pursue her education, she went to Manila and became a student assistant at Jose Rizal University, working in the library in exchange for free tuition while helping her relatives with household chores. Through determination and faith in God, she graduated Cum Laude and later served as a teacher at the university for 16 years.

Despite her achievements, she never forgot her family. She ensured that her younger siblings finished their college education before finally pursuing law school. In 2000, she returned home to care for her aging parents.

โ€œAng kahirapan ay hindi hadlang upang mabago ang ating katayuan sa buhay.โ€

Today, she continues to inspire others by sharing her experiences and guiding her community. For her, leadership means empowering others and standing firm in oneโ€™s purpose.

Though circumstances did not work on her favor of becoming a fulfilled lawyer, the knowledge remained, as she practiced as a notary public for several years and now holding the position as Mun. Human Resource Mgt. Dev Officer of LGU Viga.

Her life story reflects the spirit of a true Filipina leaderโ€”one who leads with strength, compassion, and wisdom, just like the Babaylans.

Let her story remind us that true success is not only measured by titles, but by the lives we uplift along the way.

A powerful story of sacrifice, faith, and a motherโ€™s unconditional loveโ€”proving that even the hardest choices can lead to a stronger future. ๐Ÿ’–
Amy Alcomendas, originally from Guinobatan, Albay, grew up in a family of educators. With the support of her parents, both teachers, she completed her degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce at Centro Escolar University. Through her father, who is from San Jose (Oco), Viga, Catanduanes, she eventually found her way to Viga, where she built her own family and life.

In 2013, Amy faced the most difficult chapter of her life. Circumstances forced her to leave her three young children in the care of relatives. At that time, her youngest son was only eight years old. Being away from them was the heaviest burden a mother could carry.

When she returned two years later, she saw how her children had grown stronger and more responsible despite their young age. It was during this time that her youngest son told her he wanted to enter the seminary. At first, Amy hesitated, knowing the financial challenges they faced. But her sonโ€™s words strengthened her faith: โ€œMama, bahala na ang Diyos.โ€
Holding on to that faith, Amy continued to persevere. Today, she proudly shares that her eldest child has already graduated and is working, her second child is now a 3rd year college student and SK Chairman in their barangay, and her youngest son is now in his third year at the Holy Rosary Major Seminary.

As a Job Order worker in the LGU of Viga, Amy continues to support the education of her children through hard work and determination.
Despite the struggles she faced as a solo parent of three, Amy never lost hope. She believes that every challenge can be overcome through faith, perseverance, and love for family.

Beyond her role as a mother, she actively participates in community activitiesโ€”supporting clean-up drives, youth programs, and initiatives that promote health and safety. She also shares guidance and encouragement with neighbors and young people in her community.
For Amy, leadership is not only about holding a position but about serving others with compassion and responsibility. She believes that empowering women and youth through education and values formation helps build a stronger and more inclusive community.

This Womenโ€™s Month, we honor women whose strength and perseverance uplift their families and communities. One of them is Lorena Talla Wallet, a devoted mother and community leader from a coastal area of Viga, Catanduanes.

For 32 years, Lorena and her husband built their life together while raising 12 children in their humble home an hour away from the poblacion. Life was never easy. Her husband braved the sea almost daily to fish, while Lorena planted vegetables and root crops to feed their large family, especially when the waters were too rough to sail.

Despite the hardships, Lorena remained determined to give her children a better future. Through perseverance and the support of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), they prioritized education above all else.

Beyond her role as a mother, Lorena also served her community as a 4Ps Parent Leader, an active member of a womenโ€™s organization, and a Daycare Worker for 12 years, guiding and supporting families in their community.

Today, the fruits of her sacrifices are evident: two of her children are college graduates, seven have completed vocational courses as computer technicians, two are currently in college, and one continues to pursue senior high school.

Lorenaโ€™s life reminds us that strength is found in perseverance, faith, and love for family.

Her journey reflects the quiet yet powerful strength of a Filipina who rises above challenges and inspires others to do the same.
