“OPONG” MAINTAINS ITS STRENGTH AS IT CONTINUES TO MOVE WEST SOUTHWESTWARD OVER THE PHILIPPINE SEA.

Location of Center (10:00 PM)

The center of Tropical Depression OPONG was estimated based on all available data at 980 km East of Northeastern Mindanao (10.3°N, 134.4°E).

Intensity
Maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 70 km/h, and central pressure of 1004 hPa

Present Movement
West southwestward at 15 km/h

Extent of Tropical Cyclone Winds
Strong winds extend outwards up to 280 km from the center

Heavy Rainfall Outlook

OPONG is less likely to directly affect the weather condition of the country in the next 24 hours. Onset of heavy rains due OPONG is possible by Thursday (25 September) onwards. For more information, refer to Weather Advisory No. 18 issued at 11:00 PM today.

Severe Winds

Wind Signal No. 1 will be hoisted over Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region as early as tomorrow (24 September), and the highest Wind Signal that may be hoisted throughout its passage is Wind Signal No. 3, considering that this tropical cyclone may reach severe tropical storm category.

The Southwest Monsoon and possible Easterlies, both enhanced by NANDO and OPONG, will bring strong to gale-force gusts over the following areas (especially in coastal and upland areas exposed to winds):

• Tomorrow (24 September): Most of Luzon, Western Visayas, Surigao del Norte, and Dinagat Islands.
• Thursday (25 September): Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Palawan, Siquijor, Camiguin, Surigao del Norte, Dinagat Islands, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur, and Davao Occidental.
• Friday (26 September): Batanes, Babuyan Islands, Cagayan, Ilocos Norte, Siquijor, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, and Davao Region.

HAZARDS AFFECTING COASTAL WATERS

24-Hour Sea Condition Outlook

OPONG may bring moderate to rough seas over the coastal waters of Eastern Visayas and northeastern Mindanao starting Thursday afternoon. Gale Warning may be raised over Eastern Visayas and Bicol Region as early as Thursday afternoon in anticipation of rough to very rough sea conditions.

Coastal Inundation

There is a potential risk of coastal flooding due to storm surge in low-lying coastal areas of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas due to the passage of OPONG. Storm surge warning may be issued starting either tomorrow (24 September) or on Thursday (25 September).

TRACK AND INTENSITY OUTLOOK

• OPONG is forecast to move generally west southwestward within the next 12 hours before turning west northwestward while approaching Eastern Visayas – Southern Luzon area. On the forecast track, OPONG may make landfall over Bicol Region by Friday (26 September) and is expected to cross Southern Luzon area from Friday afternoon until Saturday (27 September) morning. It may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Saturday evening or Sunday (28 September) morning.
• It must be emphasized that heavy rainfall, severe winds, and storm surge may still be experienced in localities outside the landfall point and the forecast confidence cone. Refer to “Other Hazards affecting Land Areas” for more details. Furthermore, the track may still shift within the limit of the forecast confidence cone.
• OPONG will continue to intensify while over the Philippine Sea and may reach severe tropical storm category by Thursday (25 September) afternoon. Further intensification, especially after the passage over the Philippine landmass, is not ruled out.

Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials. For heavy rainfall warnings, thunderstorm/rainfall advisories, and other severe weather information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by your local PAGASA Regional Services Division.

“CRISING” MAINTAINS ITS STRENGTH WHILE MEANDERING OVER THE SEA EAST OF AURORA.

Location of Center (4:00 PM):
The center of Tropical Depression CRISING was estimated based on all available data at 335 km Northeast of Virac, Catanduanes or 545 km East of Baler, Aurora (15.4°N, 126.7°E).

Intensity:
Maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 70 km/h, and central pressure of 1000 hPa

Present Movement:
West northwestward at 30 km/h

Extent of Tropical Cyclone Winds:
Strong winds extend outwards up to 500 km from the center
