The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) expresses grave concern over the school shooting in Tumaga, Zamboanga City, on 18 August 2026, which claimed the lives of two minors. CHR Region IX immediately conducted an independent investigation and calls for a thorough and impartial inquiry, including how fi****ms were accessed and brought into the school.

CHR urges government agencies, LGUs, schools, families, and communities to strengthen school safety and child protection mechanisms, including firearm safeguards and accessible psychosocial and mental health support.

The Commission likewise calls for a rights-based approach to juvenile justiceโ€”upholding accountability while recognising the childโ€™s age, circumstances, and need for protection and intervention.

CHR appeals to the media and the public to respect the privacy and dignity of the children and their families by avoiding sensationalism and refraining from sharing identities, photos, videos, or other information that may cause further harm.

In responding to this tragedy, the best interests of the child must remain paramount. Accountability, child protection, and violence prevention must go hand in hand. Every school must remain a safe space where children can learn, grow, and live with dignity.
