Barangay Lunzuran Bolsters Child Protection Through Multi-Sectoral Capacity-Building Seminar
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Barangay Lunzuran reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and promoting safe, inclusive communities by conducting a Training-Seminar on Child Protection on July 24, 2026, bringing together barangay officials and key community stakeholders to strengthen local child protection mechanisms.
The capacity-building activity gathered members of the Barangay Council, guidance counselors, teachers, community leaders, and Lupong Tagapamayapa (Pangkat) members, recognizing the vital role of a whole-of-community approach in preventing abuse, violence, exploitation, and discrimination against children and other vulnerable sectors.
Participants were equipped with practical knowledge on child protection laws, intervention protocols, and referral mechanisms. The seminar covered proper case management for child-sensitive concerns, standard procedures in handling Children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) and Children at Risk (CAR), as well as strategies for the prevention of human trafficking and the protection of trafficking survivors.
Serving as one of the resource speakers, City Gender and Development Officer Wilfredo J. Aporongao discussed the salient provisions of the Safe Spaces Act (Republic Act No. 11313), emphasizing the responsibility of local communities to prevent and address gender-based s*xual harassment in public spaces, schools, workplaces, and online platforms. He underscored that ensuring safe environments for children and vulnerable groups requires collaboration among government institutions, schools, families, and community members.
Meanwhile, Mr. Cyril Ganob presented the provisions of the Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Ordinance and related local policies, highlighting the responsibilities of barangay officials and community leaders in fostering equality, preventing discrimination, and ensuring accessible and responsive public services for all residents.
The seminar also emphasized the importance of coordinated action among barangay officials, educators, guidance counselors, community leaders, and the Lupong Tagapamayapa in identifying, responding to, and referring child protection cases through established legal and social welfare mechanisms. Participants actively engaged in discussions on practical interventions and shared experiences to strengthen community-based child protection initiatives.
Barangay Council of Lunzuran expressed its appreciation to all participants and resource speakers for their commitment to advancing child protection and gender-responsive governance. The activity reflects the barangay's continuing efforts to build a community where every child can grow and thrive in a safe, nurturing, and discrimination-free environment through informed leadership, active community participation, and strong intersectoral collaboration.
