Philippine Jesuits Apostolic Plan 2026–2031 charts the Province’s shared mission for the next five years, rooted in the Spiritual Exercises, the Universal Apostolic Preferences, and the call of the Church to renewed missionary discipleship. Emerging from a Province-wide process of prayer, discernment, and spiritual conversation, the plan identifies four key mission thrusts: 1) labor with and for the POOR and vulnerable, 2) accompany the YOUTH and cultivate vocations, 3) strengthen our PROPHETIC role, and 4) live out a SYNODAL conversion.

More than a strategic framework, it is a tool for ongoing discernment and action, and an invitation to personal and communal renewal, challenging every member, community, and institution to respond creatively to the signs of the times. Grounded in hope and inspired by the Gospel, the plan calls the entire apostolic body to journey together with courage, discernment, and generosity as companions of Jesus on a hope-filled mission.

The Social Development Unit (SDU) officially commenced the new academic year with its Spiritual Growth Session on July 15, 2026, facilitated by Fr. Tex Paurom, SJ. The gathering provided an opportunity for the team to reconnect with the University's mission, deepen its Ignatian identity, and prepare for another year of meaningful service to the communities.

Anchored on the Mission and Vision of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, Fr. Tex invited the participants to revisit the University's core identity, emphasizing its four guiding pillars: Faith, Service, Excellence, and Compassion. More than institutional values, these pillars serve as the foundation of the University's commitment to forming men and women for and with others. The session reminded the SDU team that every program, partnership, and community engagement must reflect the Ignatian ideals of Cura Personalis—care for the whole person—and Magis, the constant pursuit of doing more and doing better for the greater glory of God.

The reflection also explored the richness of Ignatian Spirituality. Fr. Tex emphasized that authentic service begins with a genuine awareness of people's lived realities. By recognizing the social, cultural, and personal contexts of the communities they accompany, the SDU team is better equipped to respond with compassion, discernment, and purpose.

The session was further enriched by a meaningful group sharing facilitated by SDU Unit Director, Ms. Aurora Gonzales. Participants reflected on the importance of active listening and the indispensable role of reflection in ministry and community work.

As the session concluded, the team embraced the Ignatian spirit of continuous growth through the process of reflection, evaluation, and action. Grounded in hope, the Social Development Unit moves forward as a community that acknowledges itself as a "work in progress"—committed to learning, discerning, and faithfully serving others with greater compassion, excellence, and purpose throughout the academic year.

DEVELOPMENT IN ACTION | Empowering Communities Through Gender-Responsive Resilience

As part of the commitment to building safer, more inclusive, and resilient partner communities, the Social Development Unit (SDU) actively participated in the Gender-Responsive Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Workshop held on July 9-10, 2026.

The two-day training brought together key university offices, with the SDU participating alongside representatives from the Social Awareness and Community Service Involvement (SACSI) and the Lantaka Campus Health Services.

Because disasters and climate risks impact individuals differently, the intensive session served as a powerful venue for collective growth. The training deepened awareness of pressing gender issues and equipped the participating teams with practical skills to integrate a critical gender perspective directly into grassroots community frameworks, disaster preparedness plans, and healthcare response strategies.

The workshop was masterfully facilitated by Prof. Rosalyn Romo Echem, a distinguished member of the National Gender and Development (GAD) Resource Pool, who guided participants through the vital intersections of equity, safety, and community resilience.

Armed with these new insights and capabilities, the SDU team, together with university partners, is ready to apply these learnings on the ground—ensuring that social development efforts and disaster resilience initiatives truly leave no one behind.

Bridging Shores for Peace: AdZU Joins Civil Society Summit for the Bangsamoro in Davao

Peace is built not by a single voice but by many, listening, learning, and laboring together.

From 1–3 July 2026, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through its Social Development Unit (SDU), joined the Civil Society Summit for the Bangsamoro: Strengthening Constituencies for the Peace Process, hosted by Ateneo de Davao University. Representing AdZU were Ms. Aurora C. Gonzales, SDU Unit Director, and Ms. Mary Elizabeth Apolonio, Program Coordinator of the Ateneo Peace Center.

The Summit gathered a broad and diverse peace constituency, women, Moro and non-Moro Indigenous Peoples' youth, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the academe for three days of validation workshops, plenary dialogues, and collective discernment. At its heart were structured dialogue sessions with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F) Peace Implementing Panel, led by Hon. Mohagher M. Iqbal, and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), represented by Sec. Mel Senen Sarmiento, spaces where communities did not merely receive updates on the peace process but spoke into it, presenting the Multistakeholder Call to Action for the Bangsamoro Peace Process.

The Summit was convened by a broad coalition of peace institutions and networks: the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), the International Center for Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), the Institute of Autonomy and Governance (IAG), the Gaston Z. Ortigas Peace Institute (GZO), the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS), WeAct 1325, Balay Mindanaw, Kusog Mindanaw, the Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (SENTRO), Tindig Pilipinas, the Caucus of Development NGO Networks (CODE-NGO), the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS), the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), and the League of Bangsamoro Organizations (LBO), a testament to the breadth of solidarity accompanying the Bangsamoro peace process.

While AdZU stands as an academic institution outside the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, the University affirms that the work of peace knows no administrative boundary. As part of the academe sector, AdZU carries a vital role in accompanying the full realization of the Bangsamoro peace process through education, research, dialogue, and the formation of citizens who choose understanding over division. More than a decade after the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, and as the region prepares for its first Parliamentary Elections, sustained accompaniment from all sectors matters more than ever.

This engagement is anchored on the University's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, a reminder that lasting peace is both a destination and a shared journey, made possible through partnerships that cross regions, sectors, and faiths.

The road to peace continues. And we walk it together.

AdZU-SDU Participated in the Policy Development for the Protection of IPs and Migrants in Distress

Ateneo de Zamboanga University (AdZU), through its Social Development Unit (SDU), is committed to the protection and welfare of Filipino migrant workers by actively participating in the three-day Case Conference and Policy Development Workshop on Protection Pathways for Indigenous Peoples and Migrants in Distress within Irregular Migration Corridors, held on June 22–24, 2026, organized by AWO International at Mercure Kuala Lumpur Trion, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

It was participated by various International Non-Government Organizations and Government Agencies as Duty Bearers. Representing AdZU, Ms. Aurora C. Gonzales, Director of the Social Development Unit, served as a panel discussant during Day 1 of the workshop under the session “Reintegration Concerns and Continuing Vulnerabilities.” She shared valuable insights on trafficking cases involving Indigenous Persons (IPs) moving through irregular migration routes between Mindanao and Sabah, Malaysia.

AdZU’s participation in the conference brought forward the perspectives and experiences of an academic institution actively engaged in humanitarian response and migrant protection initiatives. The University highlighted its role in supporting the call of the Mindanao Migrants Center for Empowering Actions, Inc. (MMCEAI) in October 2025, where it assisted 17 trafficked Indigenous Persons victims through the provision of medical and health assessments, psychosocial support, and legal assistance through statement-taking processes necessary for case filing.

Grounded in its mission of social engagement and human dignity, AdZU emphasizes that sustainable reintegration requires moving beyond conventional interventions toward holistic approaches that are culturally-responsive, collaborative, and centered on the needs and experiences of victims.

Through its continued participation in policy discussions and direct community engagement, AdZU remains steadfast in advancing migrant protection and promoting inclusive and humane pathways for vulnerable populations.

In sorrow and in solidarity, the Social Development Unit of the Ateneo de Zamboanga University stands with the families, students, and school communities affected by the recent acts of violence in Tacloban City and Cavite.

These were children, young lives that came to school to learn, to grow, and to imagine their futures. As an institution rooted in faith and the cause of social justice, we hold to a simple conviction: every school must be a Zone of Peace, a sanctuary where every learner feels safe to grow into the fullest version of who they are meant to be.

May we have the courage to protect our children, the wisdom to confront what wounds them, and the resolve to form peacemakers, men and women for and with others.
