Bridging Shores for Peace: AdZU Joins Civil Society Summit for the Bangsamoro in Davao
Peace is built not by a single voice but by many, listening, learning, and laboring together.
From 1–3 July 2026, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University, through its Social Development Unit (SDU), joined the Civil Society Summit for the Bangsamoro: Strengthening Constituencies for the Peace Process, hosted by Ateneo de Davao University. Representing AdZU were Ms. Aurora C. Gonzales, SDU Unit Director, and Ms. Mary Elizabeth Apolonio, Program Coordinator of the Ateneo Peace Center.
The Summit gathered a broad and diverse peace constituency, women, Moro and non-Moro Indigenous Peoples' youth, religious leaders, civil society organizations, and the academe for three days of validation workshops, plenary dialogues, and collective discernment. At its heart were structured dialogue sessions with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (M**F) Peace Implementing Panel, led by Hon. Mohagher M. Iqbal, and the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity (OPAPRU), represented by Sec. Mel Senen Sarmiento, spaces where communities did not merely receive updates on the peace process but spoke into it, presenting the Multistakeholder Call to Action for the Bangsamoro Peace Process.
The Summit was convened by a broad coalition of peace institutions and networks: the Initiatives for International Dialogue (IID), the International Center for Innovation, Transformation and Excellence in Governance (INCITEGov), the Institute of Autonomy and Governance (IAG), the Gaston Z. Ortigas Peace Institute (GZO), the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society (CBCS), WeAct 1325, Balay Mindanaw, Kusog Mindanaw, the Sentro ng mga Nagkakaisa at Progresibong Manggagawa (SENTRO), Tindig Pilipinas, the Caucus of Development NGO Networks (CODE-NGO), the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS), the Philippine Center for Islam and Democracy (PCID), and the League of Bangsamoro Organizations (LBO), a testament to the breadth of solidarity accompanying the Bangsamoro peace process.
While AdZU stands as an academic institution outside the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region, the University affirms that the work of peace knows no administrative boundary. As part of the academe sector, AdZU carries a vital role in accompanying the full realization of the Bangsamoro peace process through education, research, dialogue, and the formation of citizens who choose understanding over division. More than a decade after the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro, and as the region prepares for its first Parliamentary Elections, sustained accompaniment from all sectors matters more than ever.
This engagement is anchored on the University's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, a reminder that lasting peace is both a destination and a shared journey, made possible through partnerships that cross regions, sectors, and faiths.
The road to peace continues. And we walk it together.
