Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali "Today, I oversaw the signing of a landmark Framework for Cooperation between the National Bank of Ethiopia and the IFC to establish our countryโ€™s first dedicated Mortgage Refinance Company.
Capitalized at 100 Billion ETB, with the IFC set to contribute a minimum of $200 million, this wholesale institution will resolve long-standing liquidity mismatches in our banking sector and unlock accessible mortgage financing across Ethiopia.
This partnership is a critical step toward realizing our goal of delivering 1.5 million affordable, dignified homes for Ethiopian families while expanding private-sector participation in our financial system. Ethiopia continues to build a modern, resilient, and inclusive economy."

The speakers stressed the importance of sustained institutional engagement and stronger private-sector participation in translating bilateral relations into concrete economic partnerships.

Ethiopia participated at the High-Level commemorative meeting which marked the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State and Government of Non-Aligned Movement, held in Serbia, Belgrade from 31 August to 1 September 2026.

The commemoration brought together Heads of State and Government and representatives of Member States from over 35 countries.

In his opening address, President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuฤiฤ‡, underlined NAMโ€™s historical role in defending peace, sovereignty and equality for developing nations. President Vuฤiฤ‡ called for a renewed commitment to the Movementโ€™s founding principles through dialogue, peaceful settlement of disputes, and respect for the United Nations Charter and international law.
Ambassador Yoseph Kassaye, Director General for International Organizations Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in his statement, recalled Ethiopiaโ€™s longstanding contributions to the Movement and underscored NAMโ€™s continued relevance in addressing todayโ€™s pressing development challenges. He noted that the world has changed significantly since the Movement was founded and emphasized the need to strengthen South-South cooperation, accelerate the implementation of the SDGs, and confront the impacts of climate change. Speaking on climate change, he said the effects have become more calamitous and the extreme events the world witnessed this year alone are testament to the ghastly impacts it could continue to face if measures are not taken. He also reaffirmed Ethiopiaโ€™s commitment to mitigation efforts, including the countryโ€™s preparation to host COP32 next year.

Participants also planted trees at Friendship Park in Belgrade, following the tradition established by the Movementโ€™s founders 65 years ago.
Ethiopia was among the 25 countries which participated at the First Conference of Heads of State and Government held in Belgrade in 1961, where the Non-Aligned Movement was formally established.

As the 26th Extraordinary Session of the Executive Council and the 21st Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union, held from 20 to 30 August 2025, concluded, the Ethiopian delegation successfully completed its participation in the sessions.

Led by Ambassador Hadera Abera, State Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia, the delegation commended the African Union for the renewed political momentum behind continental efforts on conflict prevention.

Ethiopia underscored that Africa does not lack norms and institutions for conflict prevention. The persistent challenge, it noted, is the gap between decisions and implementation, as well as between early warning and timely action. Ethiopia supports strengthening early warning mechanisms and translating them into timely preventive engagement. Furthermore, it highlighted the need for stronger implementation of Assembly and PSC decisions through existing institutional channels.

Africa should harness emerging technologies to strengthen its preventive capacity. Under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, AU Champion for Artificial Intelligence and Digital Health, Ethiopia supports the responsible use of African-owned AI to improve conflict analysis, institutional preparedness, and timely political action.

Ethiopia emphasized that Africaโ€™s commitment to conflict prevention needs to be reflected in how the continent finances peace with African resources. Ethiopiaโ€™s recent decision to move from Tier II to Tier I of the African Union Scale of Assessment is a conscious political choice to assume a greater share of responsibility for financing the Union.

Ethiopia, as usual, demonstrated its steadfast commitment to the common African agenda and actively engaged in the deliberations of the extraordinary sessions..

Finally, the Extraordinary Assembly of the African Union adopted a decision on the "Strengthening of Mechanisms for Conflict Prevention and Resolution in Africa", Luanda Action Plan and Implementation Matrix.
