For families in Taj Abad, getting water had become a daily struggle. Ageing pumps, damaged pipelines and unreliable supply meant long waits, extra costs and, for many women and girls, more time spent fetching water.

With support from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), under IOM's Quick Impact Projects, IOM worked with the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Peshawar to rehabilitate the schemes with:
- New pumping machinery and motor control units
- Over 4,300 feet of new distribution pipelines
- Automatic chlorination systems
- Improved water pressure and coverage

Today, the two schemes provide more reliable, chlorinated water to more than 7,400 people.

IOM Pakistan, together with The Office of the Special Initiatives & Project Development Unit (PDU), Senate Secretariat, convened a full-day Co-Working Session on Migration Governance for officers and officials of the Senate Secretariat at the Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services (PIPS).
The session — part of a Hands-On Workshop on the Essentials of Migration Management (EMM 2.0) — brought together officers and officials from the Senate's Standing and Functional Committees, Research Directorate, Legislative Drafting Unit, and other wings of the Secretariat. It was designed as a substantive, practically grounded engagement, connecting knowledge and evidence directly to existing parliamentary processes — from committee oversight and legislative drafting to research and policy support.

Participants engaged with expert speakers on Pakistan's migration legislation, its historical evolution, the current policy and governance landscape, and the region's and country's migration profile. The focus throughout was on equipping Secretariat officers with the conceptual grounding, data access, and practical tools they will draw upon as they support the Senate's engagement on migration and related governance themes.
The session was opened by Ms. Rida Qazi, Advisor to the Chairman Senate on Special Initiatives and PDU, who set out the strategic rationale for the engagement, underscored the Senate Secretariat's institutional priorities on migration governance, and articulated why this thematic area demands sustained parliamentary attention. Mr. Darijus Pamparas, Migration Management Division Head, IOM Pakistan, provided the opening remarks from IOM's side.
The session was facilitated by Mr. Akif Naeem, Deputy Director, PDU, Senate Secretariat. Academic expertise was provided by Dr. Yaqoob Khan Bangash, Professor and Dean at the Institute of Business Administration, Karachi. Mr. Aadarsh Laghari, Strategic Media and Communication Lead, IOM Pakistan, led the facilitation from IOM's side, with support from the IOM facilitation team.
This session marks the beginning of a sustained capacity-building engagement on migration governance within the Senate Secretariat. More engagements on related thematic areas are planned in the period ahead.

Today, the Senate of Pakistan, under the leadership of Hon’ble Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani, in partnership with IOM Pakistan, convened the First Parliamentary Dialogue on Migration Governance in Pakistan.

Mio Sato, Chief of Mission, IOM Pakistan, underscored the importance of regional and international cooperation to translate global migration commitments into practical action, while Aadarsh Laghari, IOM Pakistan, served as host and moderator.

Ms. Rida Qazi, Advisor to the Chairman Senate on Special Initiatives & Project Development, served as a strategic guide and partner for IOM on behalf of the Senate of Pakistan.

The dialogue brought together members of the Senate and the NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, Parliamentarians, diplomats, United Nations - Pakistan and experts to discuss priorities and opportunities for strengthening migration governance.

Hon’ble Chairman Senate highlighted the need for stronger coordination, reliable and shared data, and greater bipartisan consensus in his keynote address, and called for continued parliamentary dialogue on migration governance in Pakistan.

Families and patients used to walk into a health unit battling rain damage, cracked walls, faulty wiring and electrical fixtures, inadequate drinking water and washrooms, and no proper waiting space in Aligarh Colony, Orangi Town.

With funding from the Kingdom of the Netherlands (Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken), IOM worked hand in hand with the District Health & Population Welfare Department, Sindh, Karachi West, to bring this Urban Health Unit back to life, restoring OPD, gynecology, maternity, family planning, and EPI vaccination services under one roof.

Today, mothers bring their children for vaccinations in a facility that finally works for them. A dedicated waiting area with new benches. Separate washrooms for privacy and dignity. Rewired and well-lit rooms. Clean drinking water. A functional labour room.

With these improvements, the health unit has seen over 30% increase in patient flow, with more people now walking through its doors for OPD, maternity, family planning, and vaccination services.

For vulnerable communities in Aligarh Colony and surrounding areas, the rehabilitated facility means better access to essential healthcare in a safer, more functional and dignified environment.
