How to improve your emotional intelligence
Emotional intelligence measures our ability to perceive our own emotions as well as the emotions of others and to manage them in a productive and healthy way.
There are some steps to improve the emotional intelligence and develop self awareness and empathy
Practice observing, how you feel in the process of rushing from one commitment to the other, meeting deadlines and responding to external demands, some of us have less awareness about our emotions and we're far more likely to act unconsciously and missed out the valuable information that our emotions contain.
Whenever we have an emotional reaction to something we're receiving information about a particular person, situation or event. The reaction we experience might be due to the situation or it might be due to the situation reminding us of a painful, unprocessed memory.
When we pay attention to how we feel, we learn to trust our emotions and we become more adapt in managing them. There are following exercises to improve the emotions:
Pay attention to where the emotion is showing up as a physical feeling in your body and how you feel the sensation. The more you practice the more it will become better.
How you behave and manage your emotions which is something you can only do if you're consciously aware of your emotions.
While you're practicing your emotional awareness notice how you act when you're experiecing certain emotions and how that affects your life.
It become easy for us when we're more conscious of how we're reacting to our emotions.
Take resposibility for your feelings and behavior. Your emotions and behavior come from you they don't come from anyone else therefore you're responsible for your emotions and behavior.
Your feelings can provide you with vauable information about your experience of the other person, your own needs and preferences but you're feelings are not another person's responsibility.
Practice empathizing with yourself and others. Empathy is about understanding why someone feels or behave in a certain way and being able to communicate that understanding to them. It applies to ourselves and others and it improve your emotional intelligence.
Emotional intelligence is a lifetime process. You can improve your emotional intelligence.
