A Brief introduction of Pakistan's Satellite Programs.....

Satellite development is a highly sophisticated field which not only requires state of the art facilities but also highly, specialized technological human resource. Through the successful development, launch, and in-orbit operations of a variety of satellites, Pakistan has joined the league of a well-established space faring nation.
Initially, two experimental satellites, Badr-1 and Badr-B were launched which marked a successful footprint of Pakistan in space. Now, Pakistan holds a fleet of earth observation, remote sensing, and communication satellites, making Pakistan self-reliant in communication and high resolution imaging while providing a wide range of different services to the nation and valuable scientific data to global science communities.
The satellite program and space utilization capabilities of Pakistan shall further strengthen with the upcoming design, development and launch of advanced communication and navigation satellites.

World Space Week (WSW), as declared by the United Nations General Assembly, is held every year during Oct 4-10, in more than 100 countries all over the world to celebrate the contributions of space science and technology to the betterment of the human condition. SUPARCO being the National Space Agency of Pakistan has been celebrating World Space Week since 2005. This year SUPARCO is celebrating World Space Week in 16 cities of Pakistan.

The theme for WSW 2020 is “Satellites Improve Life”

Ice Sheet Melting Is Perfectly in Line With Our Worst-Case Scenario.

The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, which hold enough frozen water to lift oceans 65 metres, are tracking the UN's worst-case scenarios for sea level rise.

Mass loss from 2007 to 2017 due to melt-water and crumbling ice aligned almost perfectly with the Intergovernmental Panel for Climate Change's (IPCC) most extreme forecasts, which see the two ice sheets adding up to 40 centimetres (nearly 16 inches) to global oceans by 2100.

The Rocket and Satellite Company announce first launch date.

The Rocket & Satellite Company (TRSC), Pakistan’s first private Space Company, announced that they will put their first Space Launch Vehicle into orbit on the 14th August, 2025 from Pakistan. TRSC is a private Commercial Space Company, founded by Sami Ullah Khan in Karachi, Pakistan. It will provide advanced and innovative services, solutions and products for the global Space-tech based market, supporting demanding and challenging missions in orbit and beyond.
According to Sami Ullah Khan, CEO of TRSC, “Our vision is to make life of Space companies easy to offer one solutions under one roof, such as services, solutions and products in Ground Segment, Satellites and Payload Launching domain, … great Space tech services, solutions and products at [an] affordable price for Space companies.”

Pakistan’s Science and Technology sector received unprecedented attention during recent years.

ISLAMABAD: Science and Technology sector of Pakistan, once lagging behind, has received unprecedented attention during the recent years through restructuring its departments and introducing a comprehensive road map for modernizing agriculture, health, education and alternative energy.

“The ministry has constituted four task forces in agriculture, health, education and alternative energy sectors with involvement of brilliant minds from academia and research institutions to come up with the innovative solutions to address the challenges being faced by the humanity”.

Soon after Chaudhry Fawad Hussain assumed the charge as minister, the ministry developed a Moon-Sighting Application for accurate determination of the birth of the moon and to check exact day of religious festivals.

It is part of its efforts to resolve this decades old issue and develop consensus on the issue of date of celebration of Eid which is solely determined by the moon-sighting.

The ministry also prepared a lunar calendar which proved its veracity on the Eid-ul-Fitr when it was celebrated on the date already predicted in the calendar.

The date was also corroborated by the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee. The government, in recognition of prolific role of the ministry, notified representation of its member in the Ruet Committee.

Moon-sighting on the eve of Eid has always been an issue of disagreement at national level since the creation of Pakistan. Unfortunately, no preceding government has ever accorded priority to this national issue.

Govt. Of Pakistan to raise $700 million by regulating Satellite services

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is expected to raise $700 million for the national space programme by regulating satellite services in the country.

Sources in the IT and Telecom Division recalled that in 2004 “Paksat Programme - the Way Forward” was unveiled by the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, enshrining parameters for policy frameworks to fill voids in the regulatory and financial aspects.

The national space asset utilisation could have generated around $544 million to date.

The Strategic Plans Division (SPD) prepared a summary for prime minister’s review in March 2019 to address the voids related to sustainability of the National Space Programme (NSP), which was an all-encompassing programme envisaging developments in the field of space and having direct linkages with the strategic programme.

The National Command Authority (NCA), headed by the prime minister, has already approved the NSP. The entire edifice of the space programme is based on reducing reliance on foreign and domestic funding. As such, the revenue-earning satellite services being provided by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) need to be fully utilised. However, this is not happening at present, primarily due to the unregulated domestic satellite market.

Currently, the total satellite capacity usage in Pakistan is approximately 2,200MHz, out of which 21% is on Pakistani satellites and the rest is on foreign satellites.

In financial terms, a minimum of $35-40 million per year is going out of the country and default on the part of users of Pakistani satellites, in the absence of regulations, has piled up to $22.48 million.

Countries around the world like India, China and Bangladesh have prohibited the use of foreign satellite systems, thereby granting regulatory and financial protection to their own space programmes.

Comet NEOWISE is delighting skywatchers around the Northern Hemisphere.

The comet made its closest approach to the sun on July 3 but, until now, was only visible in the sky before dawn. Now, for keen observers in the Northern Hemisphere, the comet has been getting higher in the evening sky, sparkling northwest below the Big Dipper constellation, according to Joe Masiero, deputy principal investigator of NEOWISE (NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the NASA space telescope that first spotted the comet).

One of the most fascinating details about Comet NEOWISE is that it won’t return to our skies for another 6,800 years. But that’s not the only thing that makes this icy space rock special. So let’s take a dive into what makes Comet NEOWISE unique — and a little weird.

Officially known as C/2020 F3, Comet NEOWISE is a comet that was discovered on March 27, 2020, by NEOWISE, the asteroid-hunting afterlife of the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission.

Comets, often nicknamed “cosmic snowballs,” are icy, rocky objects made up of ice, rock and dust. These objects orbit the sun, and as they slip closer to the sun most comets heat up and start streaming two tails, one made of dust and gas and an “ion tail” made of electrically-charged gas molecules, or ions.

Can you see it?

Yes! Because it is especially bright, the comet is visible in the night sky with the naked eye. Skywatchers in the Northern Hemisphere can spot the object just after sunset, to the northwest just under the Big Dipper constellation.

Pakistan-born scientist becomes first woman to head section at renowned body

Asifa Akhtar is the first international female vice president of the biology and medicine section.

KARACHI: Pakistan-born scientist Asifa Akhtar has become the first international female vice president of the biology and medicine section at Germany’s prestigious Max Planck Society.

The Max Planck Society is Germany’s most successful research organisation. Since its establishment in 1948, no fewer than 18 Nobel laureates have emerged from the ranks of its scientists, putting it on a par with the best and most prestigious research institutions worldwide.

During her term of office, Ms Akhtar will be in charge of the institutes of the sections and will also be the contact person for the Max Planck Schools.

“My heart beats for the young scientists,” the society’s website quoted Akhtar as saying.

“Academic science is a beautiful example of integration because you have people from all over the world exchanging knowledge beyond boundaries, cultures or prejudice,”

As the vice president, Ms Akhtar also wants to advance the issue of gender equality. “Gender equality needs to be worked on continuously. There are outstanding women in science and we should make all the efforts and use our resources to win them for the Max Planck Society,” she said.
