FRIP (First Response Initiative of Pakistan) was founded in 2010 in an effort to save the lives of those inflicted by trauma. Over the years, FRIP has trained hundreds of medical and non-medical personnel simple life-saving techniques, free of cost, that if applied in time, can significantly reduce the burden of trauma, that is especially rampant in Karachi in the form of violence and accidents. O
ur goals to train the entire population life saving techniques are lofty but not impossible and your support will go a long way. First Response Initiative of Pakistan (FRIP) is a Karachi based group of young doctors, medical students and others with an interest in Trauma, First Response and saving lives. A first responder is the first person at a scene of trauma/injury. In a city like Karachi, the lack of a streamlined system leaves trauma victims at the mercy of the general population in the first few minutes. How first responders react to a situation can make or break the victims chances of survival. By having a population that is apt in first response, we can reduce the burden of trauma by thousands of lives and millions of rupees every year. To make the general population aware of the responsibilities and to teach them appropriate skills to handle emergency situations will significantly reduce the adversity associated with trauma. However, training the entire country or at least Karachi’s population is no minor task and must be done in a systematic, tier by tier, ripple like fashion. Medical students (and not only doctors) have a large role to play as intermediaries.
