What is the ruling in Islam regarding intimacy between husband and wife, specifically using the mouth in s*xual relations? Is it permissible or not? (Q&A)
Answer
In Islam, intimacy between husband and wife is generally permissible and encouraged within the boundaries of modesty and purity, as it strengthens love and connection. However, Islam also clearly distinguishes between what is pure (ṭayyib) and what is impure (khabīth). Allah says: “He permits for them what is pure and forbids for them what is impure” (Qur’an 7:157). Based on this principle, many scholars have advised that acts involving impure areas or substances (najāsah)—such as private parts—should be avoided, especially when it involves the mouth. Islam places great emphasis on cleanliness and dignity, and the Prophet ﷺ said, “Purity is half of faith” (reported in Sahih Muslim). Therefore, even within marital relations, a believer is encouraged to maintain ḥayā (modesty) and ṭahārah (cleanliness) at all times.
While some scholars have differed on certain details, the safer and more cautious approach is to avoid practices that may involve impurity or go against the spirit of modesty and dignity taught in Islam. Marriage is not only about physical satisfaction but also about respect, honor, and spiritual consciousness (taqwā). A الزوج and الزوجة should focus on what is pure, respectful, and mutually comfortable, keeping their relationship within the حدود (limits) set by Allah. True intimacy is not just physical—it is built on love, mercy, and respect.
O Allah, guide all spouses to what is pure and pleasing to You, bless our marriages with love and modesty, and keep our relationships within Your halal limits. Ameen 🤲
