Urdu Science Board (USB) was established in 1962 as the “Central Board for the Development of Urdu” through a Resolution to fulfill the constitutional requirement. The Ministry of Education declared Urdu Science Board as its subordinate office in 2004. Presently the Board is a field office of National Language Promotion Department, Islamabad. ll, Lahore and three branch offices are at Hyderabad and Quetta. The Board has published more than 800 books on different science subjects, dictionaries and educational charts. Urdu Science Board has developed Urdu Science Encyclopedia consisting ten volumes. It has been printed on fine art mate paper and contains colour pictures, diagrams and visuals. It is very useful for the students of secondary and higher secondary classes, teachers and researchers as well as general readers. A quarterly “Urdu Science Magazine” is being published regularly by Urdu Science Board since 2002. Following are the functions of Urdu Science Board:
To remove existing deficiencies in Urdu in the field of science, mathematics and technologies and develop and publish learning material for primary, secondary and higher secondary schools, literacy and adult literacy institutions as well as institutions of technologies. To develop and publish instructional material in Urdu for science, mathematics and technical subjects being taught in the teacher-training institutions of the country. To produce encyclopedias of science and technologies for use of individuals, schools, technical and other institutions. To collaborate with National Educational Equipment Centre for producing literature in Urdu for all the educational equipments being prepared by the centre. To work in collaboration with all the organizations engaged in the promotion of science and technical education in Urdu in the country. To carry out such functions as assigned to it by the government.
