Che Guevara was an Argentinean-born, Cuban revolutionary leader who became a left-wing hero. A photograph of him by Alberto Korda became an iconic image of the 20th century.

Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, known as Che Guevara, was born on 14 June 1928 in Rosario, Argentina into a middle-class family. He studied medicine at Buenos Aires University and during this time travelled widely in South and Central America. The widespread poverty and oppression he witnessed, fused with his interest in Marxism, convinced him that the only solution to South and Central America's problems was armed revolution.

In 1954 he went to Mexico and the following year he met Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro. Guevara joined Castro's '26th July Movement' and played a key role in the eventual success of its guerrilla war against Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Castro overthrew Batista in 1959 and took power in Cuba. From 1959-1961, Guevara was president of the National Bank of Cuba, and then minister of industry. In this position, he travelled the world as an ambassador for Cuba. At home, he carried out plans for land redistribution and the nationalisation of industry.

A strong opponent of the United States, he guided the Castro regime towards alignment with the Soviet Union. The Cuban economy faltered as a result of American trade sanctions and unsuccessful reforms. During this difficult time Guevara began to fall out with the other Cuban leaders. He later expressed his desire to spread revolution in other parts of the developing world, and in 1965 Castro announced that Guevara had left Cuba.

Guevara then spent several months in Africa, particularly the Congo, attempting to train rebel forces in guerrilla warfare. His efforts failed and in 1966 he secretly returned to Cuba. From Cuba he travelled to Bolivia to lead forces rebelling against the government of René Barrientos Ortuño. With US assistance, the Bolivian army captured Guevara and his remaining fighters. He was executed on 9 October 1967 in the Bolivian village of La Higuera and his body was buried in a secret location. In 1997 his remains were discovered, exhumed and returned to Cuba, where he was reburied.

HRCP urges fair deal for Attabad displaced, detainees

Lahore, September 22: The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has expressed alarm at the arrest of over two dozen political activists in Gilgit Baltistan and reports of maltreatment of some of them in detention.

At least 33 people have been arrested in Gilgit Baltistan following protests against the August 11 killing of two people in police firing. The police had opened fire when nearly 200 people were protesting during the Chief Minister’s visit to Aliababad in order to highlight delays in payment of compensation to families displaced by the Attabad landslides.

HRCP said in a statement on Thursday: “The Commission takes serious exception to the manner in which the authorities have chosen to deal with public resentment following the August 11 killings. The policemen accused of the killings have yet to be arrested but many political and civil society activists have been held in a crackdown against the protesters. HRCP has noted with concern reports of mistreatment of some of the activists. Strong-arm tactics must not be used to suppress legitimate protest against the August 11 killings and due process rights of all citizens must be respected without exception. Now that a judicial probe into the incident is underway, the authorities should wait for its findings instead of ordering a crackdown on the people. Furthermore, it is a matter of grave concern that rehabilitation of those displaced by the January 2010 Attabad landslides is yet to be completed and the people feel that their concerns are not being addressed. This obviously is the root cause of public unrest.

HRCP calls upon the government to ensure that violence against political activists is stopped forthwith, due process rights are respected, findings of the judicial inquiry are made public and urgent measures are taken to rehabilitate the displaced and remove their grievances.”

The Progressive Youth Front will start its campaign against Dengue from Saturday, September 24. Here is the schedule of activities

1. Camp on Saturday at Chungi Amar Saddu Lahore from noon to 5 pm. At the camp, a doctor will give free medical advice to residents in the area. The activists of the PYF will distribute pamphlets that link this epidemic to the political economy of underdevelopment.

2. On Sunday, we have arranged lectures in different neighborhoods along Chungi Amar Saddu on both preventive measures as well as the socio-economic reasons for this crisis.

3. Our activists have already initiated a political campaign in the area to hold the local administration accountable. We hope to generate enough discussion in the locale over the weekend to be able to arrange a protest next week.
