FATA Secretariat had prepared FATA Sustainable Development Plan (2006-2015) which provide roadmap for development interventions in FATA in the coming years. The plan has identified several cross cutting issues like health, education, gender and environment which need to be addressed for effective implementation of the plan.Keeping in view the capacity constraints and lack of proper institutional s
etup in environment sector in P&D FATA there was a dire need to establish Environment Cell in FATA Secretariat. Secretary Planning and development department is the director of the Environment Cell. Chief Economist is the focal person being head of the Environment Cell housed in P& DD FATA. Environment Cell is being strengthened through hiring of sectoral heads like Natural Resource Management Specialist and Environment Specialist for capacity building of FATA directorate and line agencies for ecological sustainability in planning and implementation of development projects. In future Environment Cell will eventually converted in to a full fledge environment directorate which ultimately leads to become Environmental Protection Agency of FATA. (Chief Economist narrative)

Under the umbrella of the Environment Cell; IUCN and FATA has succeed to attract funds from Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for its flagship project “Water Governance in FATA” is a two year project focused on sustainable and ecological planning of surface and ground water in FATA.
