The Alpine Club of Pakistan can confirm that the body of Sohail Sakhi has been recovered.

A team of local porters from Shigar, ( Nadeem , Bashir and Abuzar) searching the area on their own initiative, discovered unidentified remains which have since been confirmed as those of Sohail Sakhi. The body was first spotted by Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir, and Abuzar, all from Tissar, Shigar, who then alerted others in the area. Together with a few additional volunteers, they carried the body down from Camp 1 to Base Camp. The names of the other volunteers involved will be shared later. Weather permitting, the body will be transported by helicopter today.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends, and the wider mountaineering community during this difficult time.

We cannot thank the local volunteers enough for this selfless act. At their own initiative and without being asked, they gave a grieving family the chance to say goodbye. Their courage and compassion will not be forgotten.

On this day, August 10, 1975, Italian mountaineer Reinhold Messner and Austrian climber Peter Habeler reached the summit of Gasherbrum I, becoming the first climbers to ascend an 8,000-meter peak in true alpine style.

Standing at 8,080 meters (26,509 feet) on the Pakistan–China border, Gasherbrum I is the world’s 11th-highest mountain. Messner and Habeler climbed its northwest route as a two-person team, without bottled oxygen, fixed ropes or prepared camps.

Their ascent marked a major turning point in high-altitude mountaineering. Until then, successful ascents of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks had relied largely on large expedition-style teams, extensive equipment and established camps.

Messner and Habeler demonstrated that an 8,000-meter mountain could instead be tackled with a small team, minimal equipment and a fast, self-sufficient approach. Their achievement helped pave the way for the modern alpine-style climbing of the Himalayas and Karakoram.

Gasherbrum I had first been climbed in 1958 by an American expedition.

On this day, 10 August 2005, Slovenian climber Tomaž Humar 🇸🇮 was rescued from Nanga Parbat’s immense Rupal Face after being trapped for six days at around 6,300 metres.

Humar had been attempting a bold solo ascent when fierce storms forced him to shelter in a snow cave as avalanches swept across the face. With food and fuel running low, he remained in contact with his team by satellite phone. Rescue appeared almost impossible until Pakistan Army pilots Lieutenant Colonel Rashid Ullah Baig and Major Khalid Amir Rana flew a Lama helicopter into the face and lifted him from the icy ledge. Frostbitten but alive, Humar survived one of the most daring high-altitude rescues in mountaineering history.

Four years later, in November 2009, Humar attempted another solo climb, this time on Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) in Nepal. After reporting that he had been injured in a fall, contact was lost. His body was later located and recovered from the mountain, bringing a tragic end to the life of one of the world’s boldest alpinists.

LATEST: Five bodies have been found at the base camp of Yalung Ri (5,630m) in Nepal's Rolwaling region, nearly nine months after a deadly avalanche on the mountain. Authorities believe the bodies are likely those of five climbers who went missing in the 17 November 2025 avalanche. Police reached the site by helicopter, but poor weather prevented recovery, and the bodies have not yet been formally identified. Retrieval will resume as soon as weather conditions improve.

No Summits on K2 or Gasherbrum I in 2026

For the first time in years, neither K2 (8,611 m) nor Gasherbrum I (8,080 m) saw a successful summit during the 2026 climbing season.

Persistent storms, heavy snowfall, unstable snow conditions, and an exceptionally high avalanche risk defined the season across the Karakoram. Weeks of bad weather kept teams at Base Camp, while repeated summit attempts were called off due to unsafe conditions on the upper mountain.

The season ended in tragedy following the devastating Broad Peak avalanche on 30 July, which claimed the lives of several climbers. In the aftermath, all remaining summit attempts on K2 and Gasherbrum I were abandoned, leaving both peaks without a single successful ascent this year.

The mountains remind us that success is never guaranteed. No matter the experience or preparation, nature always has the final word.

Our thoughts remain with the climbers, guides, porters, rescue teams, and the families who have been affected by this difficult season.

Mallory Geis (1987–2026) 🇺🇸

Mallory Geis was an American mountaineer from San Antonio, Texas, known for her adventurous spirit and deep passion for the mountains. Before dedicating herself fully to climbing, she owned a Pilates studio and later pursued high-altitude mountaineering, successfully climbing peaks in Nepal. Broad Peak in Pakistan was her first attempt at an 8,000-meter mountain. She tragically lost her life in the Broad Peak avalanche on July 30, 2026. Mallory is remembered for her courage, determination, and love of exploration, which inspired many in the global mountaineering community.
