W dniach 13-14 sierpnia 2026 r. mieliśmy przyjemność gościć w progach naszego Zamku niemieckich badaczy dziejów królewskiej gry - szachów. Wizytę w zamkowej czytelni złożył dr Michael Johann Negele, jeden z czołowych współczesnych badaczy historii szachów, zasłużony członek Chess History and Literature Society oraz autor opracowań poświęconych niemieckiemu szachiście, mistrzowi świata Emanuelowi Laskerowi. Dr Negele miał już okazję wielokrotnie uczestniczyć we współorganizowanych od 2002r. przez nieżyjącą już pracowniczkę naszej Biblioteki, Marię Łuczak, międzynarodowych seminariach dotyczących historii szachów.
Nasz Gość aktywnie prowadzi również międzynarodowe kwerendy biblioteczne – w tym właśnie celu ponownie zawitał do Polski, odwiedzając m.in. Barlinek, Warszawę i oczywiście Kórnik. W naukowej podróży towarzyszył mu Harry Schaack, redaktor pisma „Karl. Das kulturelle Schachmagazin” (www.karlonline.org), którego wybrane numery dostępne są w naszych zbiorach (sygn. Sz 3115 Cz).
W trakcie dwudniowej wizyty naukowcom udało się przejrzeć ponad 50 jednostek bibliotecznych związanych z kolekcją szachową. Znajdująca się w naszych zbiorach kolekcja szachowa, która liczy blisko 4000 egzemplarzy, stanowi ewenement na skalę europejską. W głównej mierze składają się na nią materiały kolekcjonowane i pozostawione przez Tassila von Heydebrand und der Lase (1818-1899) – pruskiego dyplomatę zamieszkałego w dzisiejszej Osiecznej, koło Leszna, będącego jednocześnie teoretykiem gry w szachy.
Szczególnym zainteresowaniem dr. Negele oraz redaktora Schaacka cieszył się rękopis o sygn. Sz 35 M (tzw. rękopis Chapais, ang. the Chapais manuscript), którego domniemanym autorem jest francuski matematyk Gaspard Monge. Wolumin zawiera niezwykłe odręczne szkice, a instrukcje dotyczące rozgrywek rozpisano z niewyobrażalną precyzją i niespotykaną dla pisma odręcznego estetyką. Niemieccy historycy poświęcili również uwagę korespondencji Tassila von Heydebrand, XIX-wiecznej prasie oraz drukom okolicznościowym. W swoich poszukiwaniach skupili się także na materiałach, które mogą posłużyć przygotowaniom do przyszłorocznych obchodów 150-lecia powołania ogólnoniemieckiej federacji szachowej Deutscher Schachbund (Niemieckiego Związku Szachowego).
Ponadto dr Negele przekazał w imieniu Herberta Bastiana bezcenny dar do zasobu naszej biblioteki: publikację „Chapais. Das revolutionäre Schachmanuskript von Gaspard Monge”, zawierającą szczegółową analizę wspomnianego wcześniej manuskryptu. On 13-14 August 2026, we had the pleasure of welcoming to Kórnik Castle German researchers of the history of the royal game - chess.
Our Reading Room was visited by Dr Michael Johann Negele, one of the leading contemporary scholars of chess history, a distinguished member of the Chess History and Literature Society, and the author of studies devoted to the German World Chess Champion Emanuel Lasker. Dr Negele has collaborated with our Library on numerous occasions, including the international seminars on chess history that he co-organised, together with the late Maria Łuczak, from 2002 onwards.
Our distinguished guest is also actively engaged in international library research. It was in connection with this work that he once again travelled to Poland, visiting, among other places, Barlinek, Warsaw and, of course, Kórnik. On this scholarly journey, Dr Negele was accompanied by Harry Schaack, editor of “Karl. Das kulturelle Schachmagazin” (www.karlonline.org), selected issues of which are held in our collections (shelfmark Sz 3115 Cz).
During their two-day visit, the researchers examined more than 50 library items relating to the chess collection. The chess collection held by our Library is exceptional on a European scale, comprising nearly 4,000 items. It consists primarily of materials collected and preserved by Tassilo von Heydebrand und der Lasa (1818-1899), a Prussian diplomat who lived in Osieczna and was also a distinguished chess theorist.
Of particular interest to Dr Negele and Mr Schaack was the manuscript bearing the shelfmark Sz 35 M, known as the Chapais Manuscript, whose presumed author is the French mathematician Gaspard Monge. The volume contains remarkable handwritten drawings, while its instructions for play are set out with extraordinary precision and an aesthetic quality rarely encountered in handwritten texts. The German scholars also devoted considerable attention to the correspondence of von der Lasa, to nineteenth-century periodicals and to occasional publications. Their research additionally focused on materials that may support the preparations for next year’s celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Deutscher Schachbund, the German national chess federation.
Dr Negele also presented, on behalf of Herbert Bastian, a precious addition to our Library’s holdings: the publication “Chapais. Das revolutionäre Schachmanuskript von Gaspard Monge”, containing a detailed study of the aforementioned manuscript. The gift from our guests will be gratefully presented to the Directorate of PAN BK (the Polish Academy of Sciences Kórnik Library).
