🌍 PICOBELLO – Piloting Collaborative Ways to Better Living Locally 🌍

PICOBELLO is an international project co-financed by the European Union under the Interreg Europe programme, aimed at supporting sustainable and innovative regional development.

🤝 Our mission:
Enhancing the capacity of regional and local authorities to develop and implement better policies based on innovation in the areas of sm

art specializations.

🏛️ Our core values:
✔ Sustainability – promoting environmentally responsible solutions
✔ Aesthetics – designing spaces that enhance quality of life
✔ Inclusion – building accessible and open communities

💡 How do we achieve this? PICOBELLO is a collaboration between seven partners from six European countries, working together to exchange knowledge, organize workshops, study visits, and seminars. Through this process, we identify best practices and develop innovative pilot actions to implement the values of the New European Bauhaus (NEB) in local communities.

🌱 Co-design, innovation, and green transition are key elements of PICOBELLO, driving positive change and improving the quality of life in European cities.

📢 Picobello in the spotlight!

Our project brings together seven European regions to embed values into regional and local policies.

🌱 Sustainability
🎨 Aesthetics
🤝 Inclusion

Three inseparable values guiding us towards better places and stronger communities.

Discover how we are making it happen 👇

💡 We're highlighting our projects! Are you familiar with the ?

The initiative was launched in 2020 to ‘reimagine sustainable living’ in Europe.

Seven European regions have come together to form the Picobello- Interreg Europe Project, which aims to support regional and local policymakers in incorporating New European Bauhaus values into their policies. These three “inseparable” values include: sustainability, aesthetics and inclusion.

💬 Here’s what the lead partner, Poland’s Marshal's Office of the Silesian Voivodeship, had to say about the project:

‘We need to make places more sustainable, more beautiful and more inclusive.’

‘New European Bauhaus principles are crucial, but can also be broadly understood.’

‘We believe that one individual is the most important part of regional development.’

🔵 Shaping the future together in the Silesian Region!

Yesterday, the Silesian Region – Lead Partner of the PICOBELLO project 🇪🇺 – hosted a regional stakeholder workshop on social innovation design within PICOBELLO – Interreg Europe.

Urban planners, designers, universities and public authorities came together to exchange perspectives and explore how social innovation can support long-term regional development and contribute to implementing the New European Bauhaus. The workshop created a space for dialogue, creativity and joint reflection on future-oriented policy solutions. It also strengthened cooperation between regional actors committed to building more sustainable, inclusive and beautiful living environments.

✨ PICOBELLO Study Visit in Katowice | New European Bauhaus, experienced together ✨

For three days, Katowice and the Silesian region became a shared space for learning, exchange and inspiration within the PICOBELLO Interreg Europe project, showing how the New European Bauhaus can be translated into everyday practice.

📍 Day 1 | Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice
The visit opened at the Academy of Fine Arts with presentations of good practices from all partner regions. Different perspectives, policies and local experiences came together in one place, followed by participatory workshops using creative methods. Working with a hands-on stamping technique, partners explored co-creation, citizen engagement and the role of design in shaping shared spaces.

📍 Day 2 | Experiencing what policies mean on the ground
The second day was devoted entirely to study visits. Partners could see, feel and experience in real life what had been discussed the day before. From small, community-based cultural spaces supported through the “Lokal na kulturę” initiative, to flagship cultural infrastructure such as the NOSPR Concert Hall in Katowice’s Culture Zone, and the Museum of Tyskie Browary Książęce on the Route of Industrial Heritage. Together, these places told a story of post-industrial transformation, culture-led regeneration and people-centred development.

📍 Day 3 | Reflecting and moving forward
The final day brought partners together for the Steering Committee meeting, a moment to reflect on progress so far, share insights and plan the next steps of the PICOBELLO project.

Three days of dialogue, shared experiences and inspiration confirmed one thing:
the New European Bauhaus starts locally, grows through collaboration and becomes real when policies meet people and places.

🌟 Regional Stakeholder Meeting in Gulbene! 🌟

On 7 November 2025, Vidzemes plānošanas reģions hosted a meeting for local stakeholders as part of the PICOBELLO project. The focus was on cultural heritage, placemaking, and the New European Bauhaus Compass – exploring how sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion can guide local development.

Participants visited Viestura Street, a historic 1920s railway workers’ neighbourhood, and discussed ways to preserve and revitalise local heritage. They also applied the NEB Compass to municipal projects, exploring citizen participation, cross-sector collaboration, and long-term community value.

A big thank you to all participants for sharing ideas and inspiring local development! 💡🏘️

👩‍🎓🏙️ What if you could be a City Architect for a Day?

On 4 September, young people in Valmiera had this chance during a workshop at Kurtuve – a finalist of the New European Bauhaus Award 2025! 💡✨

Guided by local experts, students created 7 proposals for the future of Kurtuve and its surroundings – from youth leisure areas and outdoor stages to interdisciplinary festivals and better public spaces. Their ideas also highlighted what Valmiera is still missing today, like more accessible leisure areas and even a skating rink for winter ⛸️.

The workshop showed how important youth participation is for shaping our cities and living environments. 🙌

Organised by Vidzemes plānošanas reģions within the Interreg Europe PICOBELLO project, together with Europe Direct Vidzeme Centre and Valmiera Municipality.

👉 Young voices matter – and they bring fresh visions for a more inclusive and sustainable future! 🌍
