Building Accountability for Ukraine: A Critical Step Towards Lasting Peace

A panel discussion with Ukraine, Poland, the Netherlands & civil society.

Yesterday, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Poland together with Civil Network OPORA convened government officials, academics, corps diplomatique and civil society representatives for an important discussion on the accountability for the crime of aggression against Ukraine 🇺🇦.

The event was opened by Ambassadors Jennes de Mol and Vasyl Bodnar who underscored the devastating consequences of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and highlighted the central role of accountability in achieving a just and lasting peace.

During the panel discussion, Ukrainian, Dutch & Polish experts Mykola Yurlov, Arjen Uijterlinde and Wojciech Deptuła explored the development of the Special Tribunal for the Crime of Aggression and examined its place within the broader international justice architecture.

The second panel with Professor Hanna Kuczynska and Olga Kotsiuruba from Civil Network OPORA featured reflections on victims’ participation, evidence collection, and the involvement of civil society in accountability processes related to the war in Ukraine.

Key take aways:
👉 accountability for the crime of aggression is not only essential for Ukraine, but for the whole international legal order.

👉 we need to uphold the international legal order and reinforce the principle that violations of international law cannot go unpunished.

👉 civil society engagement is essential in the pursuit of accountability.

👉 meaningful justice requires the active participation of those most affected by the war and the sustained engagement of society as a whole.

Justice for Ukraine is not only about addressing past harms—it is a necessary foundation for durable peace, reconciliation, and the preservation of international norms. The Netherlands remains committed.

We would like to thank all speakers, participants, and attendees for their valuable insights and engagement. Special thanks to Kateryna Ryabiko and Jetske Klein for their moderation.

The Netherlands is extending its Patriot air defence deployment in Poland for up to six months, continuing its role in the NATO Air and Missile Defence Task Force supporting the NSATU logistics hub for Ukraine.

Around 150 Dutch troops remain in place, strengthening shared security.

A great example of close Polish-Dutch cooperation and strong allied unity in protecting NATO’s eastern flank and supporting Ukraine 🇵🇱🤝🇳🇱

The Netherlands Ambassador hosted already the 2nd Belarusian Nobel Prize laureate.

The first one was author Svetlana Alexievich (2015 for literature). This time it was human rights activist Mr. Ales Bialiatski (2022 Nobel Peace prize) and his team (A. Paluda and V. Stefanovich). We discussed about needs of Belarusians in exile, the situation of Human Rights and developments in the Eastern Europe and beyond. Change will come.

"Belarus must uphold its international human rights obligations and ensure humane treatment and dignity of all detainees.
Torture and ill-treatment remains absolutely prohibited in all circumstances, without exceptions.
The continued detention of political prisoners in especially vulnerable situations raises serious humanitarian concerns.
They should be immediately and unconditionally released.
