Bilingual. Founded in 1987, the San Juan Community Library is one of the few lending libraries in Puerto Rico and has more than 30,000 books in Spanish and English in its collection. Family membership costs $25 per year, or approximately the price of a new hardcover book. The Library is run by volunteers and encourages community and individual participation for its upkeep and day-to-day operations

¡Feliz Semana Nacional de las Bibliotecas. Descubre como celebraremos este año ⬇️

La hora del cuento comenzará a las 12:30pm con la autora, Lizette Martínez quien compartirá su libro infantil, Mis cuentos del mar. Pasa y compite en nuestra Búsqueda de Tesoros, donde tendrán que deducir las pistas para encontrar el tesoro de la biblioteca, coleccionando stickers en el camino. ¿Prefieres el arte? Tírale un ojo a nuestra mesa de arts donde habrán materiales de arte disponible para crear todo tipo de dibujo. Ayudanos a decorar nuestra biblioteca con sus hermosos dibujos. ¿Tienes buen ojo para la adivinanza? Danos tu mejor respuesta como parte de nuestro Juego de Adivinanzas de Dulces. La respuesta más cercana se ganará una membresía de por vida de la biblioteca.

Además, tendremos nuestra venta de libros a $5 por bolsa mensual. Finalmente, tenemos el regreso anticipado de nuestras membresías Blast From the Past. Este año tendremos 10 renovaciones disponibles a $2. Almuerzo gratis se servirá a mediodía.

Story time starts at 12:30pm with author, Lizette Martínez who will share her children’s book, Mis cuentos del mar. Stop by and participate in our Library Treasure Hunt, where children of all ages must deduce the answers to our clues, collecting stickers along the way, to find the library’s treasure. Prefer art to riddles? Stop by our art table and let your creativity run wild! Help us cover our library with your beautiful drawings. Think you can guess how much candy is in a jar? Give us your best guess as part of our Candy Guessing Game. The closest answer will receive a lifetime library membership.

You can also expect our monthly $5 bag sale. Finally, our Blast from the Past memberships make their long awaited return. This year we will be offering 10 membership renewals at $2. Complimentary lunch will be served at noon.

¡Anunciando nuestro nuevo Taller de Dibujo en Tinta (Sumi-e) con la artista puertorriqueña, Alejandra Nanishi! El Sumi-e es una técnica tradicional japonesa de pintura monocroma que busca caputar la naturaleza con trazos simples y fluidos. Con más de 13 años de experiencia en artes plásticas y educación informal, Nanishi a representado a Puerto Rico en exposiciones naciones e internacionales y cuenta con una amplia trayectoria desarrollando talleres de arte.

En este taller:
- Aprenderás los fundamentos del dibujo en tinta
- Explorarás un enfoque contemporáneo del Sumi-e
- Desarrollarás herramientas para continuar practicando de manera autónoma

El taller tiene un costo de $25 por persona que incluye el costo de la clase y todos los materiales. Para separar tu espacio, envíanos un correo electrónico a [email protected] con el nombre del participante y un número de teléfono de contacto. ¡No necesitas experiencia previa, solo ganas de crear y explorar!

Announcing our new Ink Painting Workshop (Sumi-e) with Puerto Rican artist, Alejandra Nanishi! Sumi-e is a traditional Japanese monochromatic art style that seeks to capture the essence of nature with simple, fluid, and intentional lines. With more than 13 years of experience in visual arts and informal education, Nanishi has represented Puerto Rico with national and international expositions and has a long record of developing art programs with a technical and social focus.

In this workshop you will:
- Learn the fundamentals of ink painting
- Explore a contemporary approach to Sumi-e
- Develop tools to continue practicing at your own pace

The workshop has a cost of $25 per person, which covers the cost of the class as well as all the materials needed. ¡Marquen sus calendarios para este regalito de San Valentín! El sábado, 14 de febrero de 2026 le daremos la bienvenida a la autora y veterinaria, Natalie Vázquez Rosa. Ella compartirá con nosotros su libro titulado Harey y su gran mudanza/ Harvey’s Big Move, un libro bilingüe inspirado por su perrito Harvey y por el amor por la enseñanza.

El libro cuenta la historia de Harvey, un perrito corgi que se muda de Virginia a Puerto Rico y cómo aprende a adaptarse a su nuevo hogar, nuevas costumbres y nueva comunidad. Pasa para escuchar este adorable cuento narrada por la autora y a conocer a la inspiración del cuento, el adorable Harvey.

La hora del cuento comienza a la 1:00pm pero llega desde las 11:00am para nuestra venta de libros, hora de manualidades haciendo pulseras de amistad y llévate un libro de nuestra sección de Cita a Ciegas con un Libro.

Save the date for this Valentine’s Day treat! Join us on Saturday, February 14, 2026 for a story time presentation with children’s book author and veterinarian, Natalie Vázquez Rosa. She will be reading her very own book, Harvey’s Big Move / Harvey y su gran mudanza, a bilingual children’s book inspired by her dog, Harvey and her love for teaching.

The book tells the story of Harvey, a cute corgi who moves from Virginia to Puerto Rico and learns how to adapt to a new home, a new community, and learn about a new culture. Stop by for this story time narrated by the author and say hello to Harvey yourself! We will have copies available for purchase and be sure to get your own personalized pawprint from Harvey himself.

Story time starts at 1:00pm but stop by starting at 11:00am for craft time making friendship bracelets, our $5 bag sale, and grab a book from our Blind Date With a Book section.

¡Ya mismo nos vamos de receso! La biblioteca estará cerrada por receso navideño desde el domingo, 21 de diciembre de 2025 hasta el martes, 6 de enero de 2026. Abriremos brevemente el lunes, 29 de diciembre de 2025 para cualquier miembro que desee devolver, renovar o llevarse libros prestados.

Como costumbre, no se acumularán recargos mientras estemos de receso y siempre puedes accesae nuestro catálogo de ebooks y audiobooks mediante la aplicación de Libby. Favor de no traer donaciones de libros hasta enero ya que no los podemos procesar mientras estamos cerrados. ¡Gracias y felices fiestas!

Winter break is quickly approaching! The library will be closed for the holidays from Sunday, December 21, 2025 to Tuesday, January 6, 2026. We will open briefly on Monday, December 29, 2025 for any members who wish to return, renew, or check out new books, but no books are due this day.

As customary, fines will not be accumulated over break and all our members can access our online catalogue of ebooks and audiobooks 24/7 through the Libby app. We will not be taking book donations at this time as we cannot process them while we are closed. Thank you and happy holidays!

Con el cierre de octubre, nos preparamos para celebrar “Children’s Book Week” (Semana Nacional de los Libros Infantiles). Comenzando en el 1919, “Children’s Book Week” es la iniciativa nacional de alfabetización de más larga duración.

El ancla de la iniciativa este año es el autor e ilustrador premiado, Dav Pilkey, quien es mejor conocido como el creador de series como Dog Man y Captain Underpants. La serie de Dog Man celebra la creatividad e imaginación y explora mensajes universalmente positivos como la importancia de hacer el bien, simpatía y compasión.

¡Este año queremos ver sus creaciones! En honor a la historias de Dog Man, imagínate una historia nueva de Dog Man y crea tu propio comic. ¡Ya sea utilizando los personajes de la serie de Dog Man o creando tu propia historia en el mundo de Dog Man, deja que tu imaginación fluya!

Cuando tu comic este listo, solo entégaselo a uno de nuestros voluntarios durante la semana de “Children’s Book Week” (3-8 de noviembre de 2025). Todos los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de ganar 1 de 5 libros de Dav Pilkey. Niños y niñas hasta la edad de 18 pueden participar.

As October draws to an end, we’re gearing up to celebrate Children’s Book Week! Launched in 1919, Children’s Book Week is the longest-running literacy initiative in the United States.

This year’s anchor is bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator, Dav Pilkey, best known for creating book series like Dog Man and Captain Underpants. The Dog Man series celebrates creativity and imagination and explores universally positive messages including the importance of doing good, empathy, and compassion.

As part of this year’s Power Up With Reading celebration, we want to see your comic creations. Imagine a new Dog Man story and create your very own comic about it. Whether you want to use character from the Dog Man series or make your own story in the Dog Man world, let your imagination loose!

Once your comic is complete, make sure to hand it in to one of our volunteers during Children’s Boon Week (November 3-8, 2025). All participants will be entered for the chance to win 1 of 5 Dav Pilkey books. All children up to age 18 can compete.
