– Great case and outcome during Station San Juan surface unit medevac of a Castillo de Navia bulk carrier ship crewmember off San Juan, Puerto Rico, Tuesday.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector San Juan received a medevac request from the Malta-flagged 847-foot ship for a crewmember experiencing symptoms which required a higher level of medical care ashore. At the time of the medical emergency, the ship was transiting approximately 193 nautical miles northeast of Puerto Rico.

Coast Guard watchstanders coordinated for the ship to continue transiting towards to Puerto Rico to conduct the medevac just off San Juan. As the Castillo de Navia ship approached the established position, a Station San Juan 45-foot Response Boat Medium crew rendezvoused with the ship and worked with the ship’s crew to receive and transfer the patient. The patient was transported to Coast Guard Base San Juan, where an awaiting Emergency Medical Service unit received and finalized the patient’s transport to the Centro Medico Hospital in San Juan.

“Thanks to the excellent communication with our Sector San Juan watchstanders and the excellent teamwork between both crews and the responding EMS unit, we ensured a fellow mariner in distress received the medical care required,” said Cmdr. Matthew Romano, Sector San Juan search and rescue mission coordinator for the case.

: Great outcome outcome yesterday during multinational search effort in Eastern Caribbean waters!

U.S. Coast Guard, Dutch Coast Guard and French rescue units searching rescued an overdue boater aboard the Ocean Time sailing catamaran, Thursday afternoon, approximately 11 nautical miles west of Sint Maarten.

Rescued is Peter Baron, 58, a citizen of Dominica, after a U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Miami HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew found a man aboard a catamaran and observed him using the vessel’s emergency tiller to steer the vessel. This coincided with reports that the Ocean Time experienced a steering casualty prior to the vessel’s voyage from Tortola, British Virgin Islands to Sint Maarten, Sunday.

Following the sighting, responding Dutch Coast Guard and French rescue surface units headed to the scene. Moments thereafter, the Dutch Coast Guard unit arrived and confirmed the vessel was the Ocean Time catamaran and that the person onboard was Baron. The Dutch crew reported no medical concerns, injuries, or issues regarding the seaworthiness of the 45-foot sailing vessel and towed the partially disabled vessel to Simpson Bay, Sint Maarten. Following the rescue, the Dutch Coast Guard facilitated communications between Baron and his family to let them know he was safe.

“I am incredibly proud of our Coast Guard servicemembers and commend the phenomenal efforts of our French, Dutch, and Virgin Islands partners, which ensured this mariner’s safe return to his family,” said Cmdr. Matthew Romano, Coast Guard Search and Rescue mission coordinator for the case. “We remind boaters of the vital importance of having proper communication equipment and emergency signaling before getting underway—it truly can save your life.”

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan received a call from concerned family reporting Baron overdue, Wednesday night. Family members relayed that Baron was the sole passenger aboard the Ocean Time catamaran, and that he was intending to deliver the Ocean Time to the vessel’s new owner. A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter launched to search as watchstanders established communication with a local maritime agent who reported that one-week prior Baron had departed Tortola bound for St. Maarten aboard the Ocean Time, but that he experienced steering system issues that forced him to return to Tortola. The agent further relayed that Baron performed repairs on the steering system before departing again for Sint Maarten, Sunday.

- Coast Guard and regional partners are searching for an overdue boater in Eastern Caribbean waters between the Virgin Islands and the island of St. Maarten, Thursday.

Missing is Peter Baron, 58, a citizen of Dominica, after he reportedly departed on a voyage from Tortola, British Virgin Islands bound for St. Maarten, Sunday, but he has not arrived at his destination.

Baron reportedly was the sole person aboard a 45-foot white catamaran Ocean Time on a voyage to deliver the vessel to its new owner.

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan received a call from concerned family reporting Baron overdue, Wednesday night. Watchstanders were able to establish communication with a local maritime agent who reported that one-week prior Baron had departed Tortola bound for St. Maarten aboard the Ocean Time, but that he experienced steering system issues that forced him to return to Tortola. The agent further relayed that Baron performed repairs on the steering system himself before departing again for St. Maarten, Sunday.

Watchstanders directed the launch of a Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to search and also issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and an Enhanced Group Call for vessel traffic in the area to be on the lookout.

A Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter crew, Puerto Rico police marine units, and local emergency teams responded to a vessel capsizing just off Coco Beach in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, Monday afternoon.

A Good Samaritan boat arrived first on-scene and rescued all three passengers from the overturned hull, including two adults and one minor.

At 1:58 p.m., Monday, Coast Guard Sector San Juan watchstanders received a call from the vessel passengers reporting the capsizing that was relayed by a 911 Emergency Service Operator. Watchstanders issued and Urgent Marine Information Broadcast warning to nearby boaters and launched an MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Air Station Borinquen.

Following the rescue, the Good Samaritan transferred the rescued vessel passengers to awaiting Municipal Emergency Management personnel, who reported no medical assistance was required.

Coast Guard Incident Management personnel are monitoring this case for pollution. So far, no pollution from the capsized vessel has been observed at the scene.

Coast Guard Sector San Juan Marine Inspectors conducted a post-casualty inspection aboard the ferry La Borinqueña in Ceiba, Puerto Rico, Tuesday.

The inspection was scheduled after the vessel La Borinqueña sustained a generator casualty during the vessel’s transit from Ceiba to Vieques, Puerto Rico, Monday afternoon.

After inspecting the damage, Coast Guard placed the vessel out of service until the company performs satisfactory repairs and tests before the ferry can return to normal cargo and passenger transport operations.

“We conducted an inspection of the equipment failure that led to the marine casualty," said Coast Guard Cmdr. Carlos Ortega-Pérez, Chief of Commercial Vessel Compliance. "Our office will provide oversight of all repairs and test all components to ensure La Borinqueña is completely safe before it carries passengers and cargo again."

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan received a Channel 16 communication from the ferry La Borinqueña, Monday afternoon, reporting the generator casualty and that the malfunction affected the captain’s ability to maneuver the vessel. The vessel returned to Roosevelt Roads Harbor in Ceiba under the es**rt of a Coast Guard Station San Juan surface unit. Once inside the harbor, a tugboat assisted the ferry during docking maneuvers before all 358 passengers were able to safely disembark.

Southeast District crews remain ready 24/7 to respond to mariners in distress, working alongside partner agencies to protect lives and ensure the safety of those on the water.

Marine Safety Unit St. Thomas is investigating a collision between a 126-foot ferry and a 40- foot sailboat, Saturday, near Red Hook, St. Thomas, USVI.

St John Rescue crews transported 3 injured people from the sailboat to local emergency services in stable condition.

The ferry operator alerted Sector San Juan watchstanders of the collision at approximately 10 a.m. The ferry reported having 49 people aboard with no injuries. The sailing vessel had 5 people aboard.

The U.S. Coast Guard reminds mariners to follow the rules of navigation, keep a sharp lookout, and operate at safe speeds. Sector San Juan crews are ready 24/7 to answer the all for help. They can be reached at VHF Ch.16, at 787-289-2041.

Vessel adrift on the rocks brought to safety.🌊 🛘 🚤

U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier crew members assisted a person on a 16 ft. inflatable vessel drifting onto the rocks near Rincon, Friday.

Napier’s small boat crew towed the vessel to the Rincon municipal boat ramp at approximately 7:20 p.m.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the team’s response,” said Lt. John Groen, commanding officer, Coast Guard Cutter Joseph Napier. “The boat crew identified a disabled vessel and reacted before the swells could drive it onto the rocks. I’m glad we were in the right place at the right time, able to rescue a mariner in distress before the sun set and the situation deteriorated.”

: Coast Guard Sector San Juan suspended the search pending any new developments for an overdue fisherman after off the southern coast of Ponce, Puerto Rico, Wednesday night.

Still missing is Eucebio Mangual, 63, resident de Ponce, after he reportedly went out fishing at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday from the local fishing village boat ramp, but did not return when expected, Sunday morning.

“Our hearts go out to Mr. Mangual’s family during this most difficult time,” said Cmdr. Matthew Romano, Coast Guard search and rescue mission coordinator for the case. “The Coast Guard is deeply grateful for the unwavering efforts of the pilots, mariners, law enforcement officers, and first responders who participated in the search and to Mr. Mangual’s son, whose incredible courage and cooperation helped guide our efforts. This tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of proper voyage planning, vessel maintenance, and ensuring your boat is equipped with the proper safety equipment and reliable means of communication before heading out to sea.”

Coast Guard watchstanders at Sector San Juan received a call from the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources operator at 1:06 p.m. Saturday, who relayed the overdue report that had been received from Mangual’s wife. The reporting source also informed that Mangual’s intended fishing route was unknown; however, that he would usually go fishing south of Isla Caja de Mu***os and east to Cayo Cabezos.

Mangual reportedly departed aboard a 19-foot white recreational vessel named Angel, and he was described as 6-foot-tall and weighing 240 pounds. He was last seen wearing black swimming trunks and a light-grey shirt, and his truck and boat trailer were located at the boat ramp parking area.

During search operations, a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew successfully located a floating fuel tank, Monday, approximately 25 nautical south of Ponce which was subsequently recovered from the water by a Coast Guard cutter. Coast Guard watchstanders have since discussed the specifications of the recovered equipment with a previous owner of the vessel Angel. The item is being transferred to the Puerto Rico Police Department, which will conduct a formal examination as part of their missing person investigation.

During search efforts Wednesday morning, Puerto Rico Police and Ponce Municipal Office of Emergency Management personnel also located and recovered a container with documents belonging to Mangual that had washed ashore west of the Ponce fishing village.

Coast Guard rescue units, U.S. Air Force Civil Air Patrol, and Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard aircraft completed 32 air and surface searches. The search extended from Salinas to Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico covering 3,035 square nautical miles; an area larger in size than Puerto Rico.
