O projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, reforça o seu compromisso com a sensibilização da população, envolvendo pessoas de diferentes idades e áreas de formação numa missão comum: conhecer, valorizar e proteger a biodiversidade única dos Açores.

Através de ações de educação ambiental e de contacto próximo com a população, o projeto promove o conhecimento sobre os caracóis endémicos da ilha de Santa Maria — espécies raras e frágeis, exclusivas deste território, que desempenham um papel essencial nos ecossistemas locais.

A preservação destes caracóis depende diretamente da qualidade dos seus habitats. Por esse motivo, o LIFE SNAILS continua a apostar na recuperação ambiental como eixo central da sua intervenção.

The LIFE SNAILS project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, reinforces its commitment to raising public awareness, involving people of different ages and educational backgrounds in a common mission: to know, value and protect the unique biodiversity of the Azores.

Through environmental education actions and close contact with the population, the project promotes knowledge about the endemic snails of Santa Maria island — rare and fragile species, unique to this territory, which play an essential role in local ecosystems.

The preservation of these snails depends directly on the quality of their habitats. Therefore, LIFE SNAILS continues to focus on environmental restoration as the central axis of its intervention.

🇵🇹 𝗦𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗮̃𝗼 𝗹𝘂́𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗺 𝗮 𝗔𝗰𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗶𝗮 𝗦𝗲́𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗮 𝗦𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮 𝗖𝗮𝘀𝗮 𝗱𝗮 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗼́𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗮

No passado mês de março, o projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, dinamizou uma sessão de sensibilização na Escola Profissional de São Carlos, em Angra do Heroísmo, dirigida a um grupo de idosos.
A atividade incluiu a apresentação dos objetivos e das ações do projeto, promovendo a sensibilização para a conservação da biodiversidade, bem como uma componente prática particularmente envolvente, que permitiu a observação de exemplares endémicos da ilha de Santa Maria.

Este momento proporcionou uma experiência educativa enriquecedora, aproximando os participantes do património natural dos Açores e reforçando a importância para a sua preservação.

Last March, the LIFE SNAILS project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, held an awareness session at the São Carlos Professional School, in Angra do Heroísmo, aimed at a group of senior citizens.

The activity included a presentation of the project's objectives and actions, promoting awareness of biodiversity conservation, as well as a particularly engaging practical component that allowed for the observation of endemic species from the island of Santa Maria.

This moment provided an enriching educational experience, bringing participants closer to the natural heritage of the Azores and reinforcing the importance of its preservation.

O projeto LIFE SNAILS marcou presença na quinta reunião do Conselho Regional do Ambiente e do Desenvolvimento Sustentável (CRADS), realizada em Ponta Delgada. Durante este encontro, os projetos LIFE coordenados pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática apresentaram os principais progressos alcançados, bem como as ações de conservação da natureza atualmente em curso no arquipélago dos Açores.

No âmbito do LIFE SNAILS, destacaram-se os trabalhos de monitorização e conservação de gastrópodes terrestres endémicos, assim como os esforços desenvolvidos na recuperação dos seus habitats naturais. A sessão permitiu ainda partilhar desafios, trocar experiências entre projetos e discutir estratégias para reforçar a proteção da biodiversidade e a resiliência dos ecossistemas insulares.

A participação no CRADS reforça a importância do trabalho colaborativo entre entidades, contribuindo para a melhoria contínua das ações de conservação e para a promoção de um desenvolvimento sustentável nos Açores.

The LIFE SNAILS project attended the fifth meeting of the Regional Council for the Environment and Sustainable Development (CRADS), held in Ponta Delgada. During this meeting, the LIFE projects coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action presented the main progress achieved and the nature conservation actions currently underway in the Azores archipelago.

Within the scope of LIFE SNAILS, particular emphasis was placed on the monitoring and conservation of endemic terrestrial gastropods, as well as the efforts made to restore their natural habitats. The session also provided an opportunity to share challenges, exchange experiences between projects and discuss strategies to strengthen biodiversity protection and the resilience of island ecosystems.

Participation in CRADS reinforces the importance of collaboration between organisations, contributing to the continuous improvement of conservation actions and to the promotion of sustainable development in the Azores.

A equipa operacional do projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, encontra-se no terreno a executar ações de controlo de espécies invasoras.

Os trabalhos incluem a identificação, remoção e eliminação de plantas exóticas invasoras nas áreas prioritárias de intervenção do projeto, contribuindo para a recuperação dos habitats naturais e para a proteção das espécies de moluscos terrestres endémicos.

A execução destas ações exige preparação técnica, conhecimento aprofundado do território e trabalho de campo sistemático, assegurando a implementação eficaz das medidas de conservação previstas.

The LIFE SNAILS operational team, project coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, is currently carrying out invasive species control actions on the ground.

The work includes identifying, removing, and eradicating invasive alien plant species in the project’s priority intervention areas, contributing to the restoration of natural habitats and the protection of endemic terrestrial snail species.

The implementation of these actions requires technical preparation, knowledge of the territory, and systematic fieldwork to ensure the effective ex*****on of the planned conservation measures.

O envolvimento da população nas ações do projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, tem vindo a produzir resultados concretos no domínio da conservação da natureza na ilha de Santa Maria.

Na sequência de diversas intervenções desenvolvidas em articulação com a comunidade e entidades parceiras, centradas na recolha e disseminação de sementes, foi registado o surgimento das primeiras plântulas de 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢 no interior da zona do Pico Alto, na ilha de Santa Maria.

O desenvolvimento de ações como esta contribui diretamente para o enriquecimento da biodiversidade local, bem como para a melhoria do habitat das espécies de caracóis endémicos que constituem o principal alvo do projeto.

Coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action, community involvement in the LIFE SNAILS project is producing tangible results in nature conservation. Following interventions focused on the collection and dissemination of seeds, carried out in conjunction with the community and partner entities, the first 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘢𝘭𝘷𝘪𝘧𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘢 seedlings appeared in the interior of the Pico Alto area on the island of Santa Maria.

The development of these actions directly contributes to enriching local biodiversity and improving the habitat structure of the endemic snail species that are the project’s main focus.

Na sequência da visibilidade alcançada pelos caracóis endémicos da ilha de Santa Maria, através do trabalho do fotógrafo Pepe Brix, publicado na prestigiada revista 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘤, o Museu de Santa Maria apresenta, até ao final de janeiro, a exposição “𝟭𝟬 𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘀 𝗱𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼́𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗺 𝗙𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗳𝗶𝗮”, na qual a 𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳, espécie-alvo do projeto LIFE SNAILS, assume particular destaque.

A exposição integrará um percurso itinerante pelo arquipélago dos Açores, permitindo ao público aprofundar o conhecimento sobre o trabalho desenvolvido pelo fotógrafo, bem como sobre o projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática.

After the visibility given by photographer Pepe Brix to the endemic land snails of the island of Santa Maria in the prestigious 𝘕𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘎𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘤 magazine, the Santa Maria Museum presents, until the end of January, the exhibition “𝟭𝟬 𝗬𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘆”, in which 𝘓𝘦𝘱𝘵𝘢𝘹𝘪𝘴 𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘳, a target species of the LIFE SNAILS project, is given prominent attention.

A Secção de Cadetes da Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Santa Maria participou recentemente nos trabalhos de campo do projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática.

Com grande entusiasmo e sentido de missão, os jovens voluntários realizaram a plantação de 155 árvores nativas no Lugar das Fontinhas, contribuindo diretamente para a recuperação e o reforço do habitat das espécies de caracóis endémicos da ilha.

Esta iniciativa evidencia a importância do envolvimento comunitário na proteção da biodiversidade única de Santa Maria e reforça o papel fundamental dos jovens na conservação da natureza.

The Cadet Section of the Santa Maria Volunteer Firefighters Association recently took part in fieldwork activities under the LIFE SNAILS project, coordinated by the Regional Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Action.

With great enthusiasm and commitment, the young volunteers planted 155 native trees in Lugar das Fontinhas, directly contributing to the restoration and strengthening of the habitat of the island’s endemic snail species.

This initiative highlights the importance of community involvement in protecting Santa Maria’s unique biodiversity and reinforces the essential role of young people in nature conservation.

Integrado no Workshop Técnico do LIFE SNAILS, que decorreu nos dias 22 e 23 de outubro, na ilha de Santa Maria, os participantes visitaram as instalações do beneficiário associado – a Direção Regional dos Recursos Florestais e do Ordenamento.

Durante a visita, foram apresentados os trabalhos de produção de espécies endémicas, fundamentais para as ações de recuperação e melhoria do habitat das espécies-alvo do projeto.

Esta partilha de experiências reforça a cooperação entre entidades regionais e o compromisso conjunto na conservação da biodiversidade e valorização dos ecossistemas naturais da ilha de Santa Maria.

During the visit, the team presented the work carried out in the production of endemic plant species, which are essential for the restoration and improvement of the habitat of the project’s target species.

This exchange of experiences strengthens cooperation among regional entities and reinforces the joint commitment to conserving biodiversity and enhancing Santa Maria’s natural ecosystems.

No âmbito do Workshop Técnico do projeto LIFE SNAILS, coordenado pela Secretaria Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, os participantes realizaram uma visita às áreas de intervenção do projeto, que contou com a presença da equipa de gestão do LIFE BEETLES.

Ao longo da visita, foram apresentadas as metodologias de trabalho com invertebrados, com o objetivo de partilhar e transferir conhecimentos e boas práticas entre projetos LIFE, num verdadeiro espírito de colaboração e cooperação.

Esta interação reforça a importância da articulação entre iniciativas do Pograma LIFE na proteção e valorização da biodiversidade única dos Açores.

During the visit, the LIFE BEELTES team presented the methodologies developed within their work on invertebrates, aiming to promote the replication and transfer of knowledge and good practices between LIFE projects, in a true spirit of sharing and cooperation.

This interaction highlights the importance of collaboration among LIFE initiatives in protecting and enhancing the Azores' unique biodiversity.

Nos dias 22 e 23 de outubro, a ilha de Santa Maria acolheu o Workshop Técnico do projeto LIFE SNAILS, um encontro que contou com a participação do Secretário Regional do Ambiente e Ação Climática, Alonso Miguel, e que reuniu oradores e participantes de diversas áreas num espaço de partilha de conhecimento e experiências dedicadas à conservação das espécies endémicas da ilha.

Ao longo do evento, foram apresentados os progressos das ações em curso, debatidas estratégias de monitorização e controlo de espécies invasoras, e sublinhada a importância da colaboração entre entidades, técnicos e comunidade local.

Um agradecimento especial a todos os palestrantes, ao Serviço de Ambiente e Ação Climática de Santa Maria, aos operacionais, técnicos, vigilantes da natureza e a todos os que contribuíram para o sucesso deste momento de partilha e cooperação.

🇬🇧 𝗟𝗜𝗙𝗘 𝗦𝗡𝗔𝗜𝗟𝗦 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽

On 22 and 23 October, the island of Santa Maria hosted the LIFE SNAILS Technical Workshop, a meeting attended by the Regional Secretary for the Environment and Climate Action, Alonso Miguel, which brought together speakers and participants from various fields in a space for sharing knowledge and experiences dedicated to the conservation of the island's endemic species.

Throughout the event, participants presented progress on the project’s actions, discussed strategies for monitoring and controlling invasive species, and highlighted the importance of collaboration among institutions, technicians, and the local community.

A huge thank you to all the speakers, to the Santa Maria Environment and Climate Action Service, to the field workers, technicians, and park rangers, and to everyone who contributed to the success of this valuable moment of sharing and cooperation!
