Vigia da Queimada

Every one welcomed to share picts and comments The first step of “Vigia of Queimada”, was built in 1939.

Used by “Armações Baleeiras” of Lajes do Pico for s***m whale hunting, this lookout structure closed definitively in 1984. Acquired by Espaço Talassa, it gained its new and pacific vocation in 1991: Watching the ocean, for touristic and scientific purposes. It covers almost 50 miles from east to west and more than 20 miles from north to south on a 195 degree radius. Due to a neighbourhood fight, t

he lookout structure of Queimada is the only one in the Azores that has two levels… the first one planted trees and corn to block the view of the ocean! Today, visitors, cetacean’s enthusiasts, students or scientists who are interested in watching wildlife in their natural environment use the first level from April to October. On demand, they can be assisted by experienced lookouts posted in the second level. O primeiro degrau da “Vigia da Queimada” foi colocado em 1939. Inicialmente, era utilizado por “Armações Baleeiras” das Lajes do Pico, na caça ao cachalote; no entanto, fechou definitivamente em 1984. Foi adquirida pelo Espaço Talassa em 1991 e ganhou a sua nova e pacífica vocação: observação do oceano, com fins turísticos e científicos. Consegue cobrir quase 50 milhas náuticas de este a oeste, e mais de 20 milhas náuticas de norte a sul, num raio de 195 graus. Devido a uma disputa entre vizinhos, a estrutura da vigia da Queimada é a única nos Açores que possui dois andares… o primeiro plantou árvores e milho para bloquear a vista para o mar! Hoje em dia, visitantes, entusiastas dos cetáceos, estudantes ou cientistas que tenham interesse em observar vida selvagem no seu habitat natural utilizam o primeiro andar entre Abril e Outubro. Podem ser auxiliados pelos vigias experientes que ocupam o segundo andar.

Yesterday, Marcelo have done the cleaning to Queimada lookout.
He was not able to resist has to have a look to the sea. In his Binocular: Blue, fine and Humpbacks were already taking flaking breaching in our Garden of the South Pico!
KEEP CALM first 2017 whale watching is planned for next Saturday 25th
