Portugal has been elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for the 2027–2028 term, following a vote by the United Nations General Assembly.
Portugal obtained 134 votes in the election for the Western European and Others Group seat, securing its place on the 15-member Council.
The Security Council is the United Nations body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. It is composed of five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members elected for two-year terms, with five rotating each year.
For the 2027–2028 period, Portugal will join Austria, Trinidad and Tobago and Zimbabwe as newly elected non-permanent members.
From an economic diplomacy perspective, this development contributes to Portugal’s continued international visibility and reinforces its engagement within the multilateral system, where global political and economic agendas are increasingly interconnected.
