🇵🇹 Os Açores e a sua Diáspora:
Uma Relação de União, Gratidão e Reciprocidade
Há momentos em que é importante parar e recordar uma realidade que, por vezes, parece ser esquecida:
Os Açores não são apenas nove ilhas. Os Açores são também o seu povo — onde quer que esse povo viva.
Ao longo de gerações, os emigrantes açorianos construíram novas vidas longe da sua terra, mas nunca deixaram verdadeiramente os Açores para trás.
Continuaram a enviar apoio às suas famílias.
Continuaram a investir nas suas terras.
Continuaram a comprar, construir e manter propriedades.
Continuaram a visitar as ilhas e a trazer filhos, netos e amigos.
Continuaram a apoiar o comércio, a restauração, o turismo e a economia local.
E, sobretudo, continuaram a ajudar.
Quando uma instituição nos Açores precisa de apoio, muitas vezes são as comunidades emigrantes que organizam angariações de fundos.
Quando uma família atravessa dificuldades, os emigrantes mobilizam-se.
Quando uma igreja, associação, escola, grupo cultural ou projeto comunitário necessita de recursos, a nossa diáspora responde.
Não porque espera algo em troca.
Mas porque os Açores continuam a fazer parte de nós.
Esta ligação tem um valor humano, cultural e económico que não pode ser ignorado.
É também graças à diáspora que tantos açorianos mantêm uma relação permanente com as ilhas. O turismo, o investimento, a aquisição e manutenção de propriedades, o apoio às empresas locais e o consumo de bens e serviços são apenas algumas das formas através das quais os emigrantes continuam a contribuir para a Região.
Por isso, a relação entre os Açores e a sua diáspora deve ser uma relação de reciprocidade.
Não pode ser apenas uma questão de receber.
Durante décadas, os emigrantes deram aos Açores — e continuam a dar.
É perfeitamente legítimo, portanto, que também esperem que os Açores reconheçam e apoiem iniciativas que são importantes para as suas comunidades, para a preservação da identidade açoriana e para a transmissão da nossa cultura às novas gerações.
Apoiar a diáspora não signif**a apoiar menos os Açores.
Apoiar a diáspora é também apoiar os Açores.
Porque cada açoriano que vive fora é uma ponte entre a Região e o mundo.
É alguém que leva consigo a nossa cultura, a nossa gastronomia, as nossas tradições, a nossa história e o nosso nome.
E essas pontes têm um valor incalculável.
Não devemos olhar para os açorianos que vivem fora como alguém que está “longe”.
Devemos olhar para eles como parte integrante da grande comunidade açoriana.
Os emigrantes não esqueceram os Açores.
Nunca esqueceram.
E talvez seja altura de garantirmos que os Açores também nunca esqueçam tudo aquilo que a sua diáspora tem feito — e continua a fazer — pela sua terra.
Porque a distância pode separar geografias, mas não separa quem continua a sentir os Açores no coração.

There are times when it is important to stop and remember a reality that, at times, seems to be forgotten:
The Azores are not just nine islands. The Azores are also their people — wherever those people may live.
For generations, Azorean emigrants have built new lives far from their homeland, but they never truly left the Azores behind.
They continued to send support to their families.
They continued to invest in their homeland.
They continued to buy, build and maintain properties.
They continued to visit the islands and bring their children, grandchildren and friends.
They continued to support local businesses, restaurants, tourism and the local economy.
And, above all, they continued to help.
When an institution in the Azores needs support, it is often the emigrant communities that organize fundraising efforts.
When a family is going through difficult times, emigrants mobilize to help.
When a church, association, school, cultural group or community project needs resources, our diaspora responds.
Not because they expect anything in return.
But because the Azores continue to be a part of us.
This connection has a human, cultural and economic value that cannot be ignored.
It is also thanks to the diaspora that so many Azoreans maintain a permanent connection with the islands. Tourism, investment, the purchase and maintenance of properties, support for local businesses, and spending on goods and services are just some of the ways in which emigrants continue to contribute to the Region.
Therefore, the relationship between the Azores and their diaspora should be one of reciprocity.
It cannot simply be about receiving.
For decades, emigrants have given to the Azores — and they continue to give.
It is therefore entirely legitimate for them to also expect the Azores to recognize and support initiatives that are important to their communities, to the preservation of Azorean identity, and to passing our culture on to future generations.
Supporting the diaspora does not mean supporting the Azores any less.
Supporting the diaspora is also supporting the Azores.
Because every Azorean who lives abroad is a bridge between the Region and the world.
They are someone who carries our culture, our cuisine, our traditions, our history and our name with them.
And these bridges have immeasurable value.
We should not look at Azoreans who live abroad as people who are “far away.”
We should see them as an integral part of the greater Azorean community.
Emigrants have not forgotten the Azores.
They never have.
And perhaps it is time to ensure that the Azores also never forget everything their diaspora has done — and continues to do — for their homeland.
Because distance may separate geographies, but it does not separate those who continue to carry the Azores in their hearts.
