Innovative "Pugedon" vending machines in Istanbul have created a clever cycle of sustainability by linking environmental recycling with animal welfare. These solar-powered units dispense a portion of pet food whenever a passerby deposits a plastic bottle into the recycling slot.
The initiative addresses two major urban challenges simultaneously: reducing plastic waste in city streets and providing nourishment for the thousands of stray animals that roam the city. The cost of the pet food is covered by the value of the recycled plastic bottles collected within the machine, making the system financially self-sustaining.
Many of these machines also include a water bowl feature, allowing people to pour out the remaining water from their bottles before recycling them. This ensures that the animals have access to both clean food and hydration, which is particularly vital during the hot summer months.
The presence of these machines has fostered a sense of community responsibility and empathy toward urban wildlife. By making recycling a rewarding act for the local ecosystem, the project encourages citizens—especially children—to engage more frequently with green habits.
