Literally opened at the ground floor of a collective housing block in Drumul Taberei neighbourhood, in a former garage, a former herbal shop, a former tailor shop, OPEN Garage aims to be a supplement room for the inhabitants of โ€˜the curveโ€™ and action researchers in the field. Placed at the ground level, the project seeks to participate to neighbourhoodโ€™s life. OPEN Garage aims to grow organically, adapting the research, the program and the activities to the dynamics of the area.

Few draft ideas for activities: booksโ€™ exchange, workshops of non-formal education, participatory mapping, mini-archive with local memory, exchange sessions, self-construction workshops, exhibitions, talks, projections. Through these activities, the Garage is OPEN and works as a public space, accessible for the people of the neighbourhood. Beside these activities, the Garage is half-OPEN, working as a semi-private space, used as a working space by the partner researchers acting in the area.

Built in several stages, Drumul Taberei neighbourhood of Bucharest reflects the evolution of collective living in Romania, from blocks, to micro-rayon, until later densifications. Here, the successive intersections between the designersโ€™ initial intentions, the housing policies and the inhabitantsโ€™ answers are evidenced over the background of socio-economic transformations of the past 60 years. In this context, the OPEN Garage was initiated as a community' equipment and a research and support tool for the practices of collective transformation, use and management of the neighbourhoodโ€™s public spaces.

The project was initiated in 2020 by Alex Axinte as a project-space for research, mutual learning and cultural and community activation. OPEN Garage is the 2nd edition of the Intermediary Laboratories (inter/LAB), an action research project which aims to activate the latent practices of urban commoning from the ex-socialist context. Between June and October 2021, the Garage' team grows with: Iris ศ˜erban (anthropologist) ศ™i Bogdan Iancu (anthropologist, lectures), together with Anca Niศ›ฤƒ (sociologist), Ileana Szasz (anthropologist, director), Diana Culescu (landscape designer), Ioana Tudora (architect), Ioana Irinciuc (librarian).

On this occasion, an exhibition curated by Raluca Paraschiv and Alex Axinte was also opened, dedicated to the Drumul Taberei district, which is organized around a looping boulevard and has undergone several successive transformations. Designed by a young team of architects, the district was structured into microrayons and has become a remarkable example of collective living thanks to its extensive green spaces, educational, sports, and cultural infrastructure, as well as informal gardening and leisure activities.

Housing, as a form of adaptation and domestication of the standardized spaces of the original design, is represented in the exhibition through images characteristic of the neighbourhoodโ€™s early period - โ€œMonografia Drumul Tabereiโ€ (1973) from the Mihai Oroveanu Image Collection, and photographs from the 1980s - ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐ฅ ๐€๐ฑ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž and ๐ƒ๐š๐ง ๐ƒ๐ข๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ, through academic research and products of socio-anthropological research โ€“ the collection of the Garaj DESCHIS / OPEN Garage project (2020โ€“2025), objects found or borrowed from current and former residents of the neighbourhood, documentary images from the collection of the Oraศ™ รฎn Buclฤƒ (City in a Loop) creative critical research residency (2024), and works of contemporary art - ๐€๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ๐š๐ง๐๐ซ๐š ๐‚๐จ๐ซ๐จ๐ข & ๐๐จ๐ ๐๐š๐ง ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ฆ๐ข๐ญ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ, ๐ˆ๐จ๐ง๐ฎ๐ญฬฆ ๐ƒ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐šฬ†๐ฆ๐ข๐ญฬฆ๐šฬ†, Ana Kun, ๐€๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ๐š๐ง๐๐ซ๐š ๐Œ๐จ๐œ๐š๐ง, ๐‘๐ฎ๐ฑ๐š๐ง๐๐ซ๐š ๐๐ข๐ญฬฆ๐ž๐ฌ๐œ๐ฎ, ๐“๐ฎ๐๐จ๐ซ ๐“ฬฆ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ฎ.

The New Towns | New Narratives project brings together a European network of partners from 16 new towns - new cities or districts built in the 1960s and 1970s based on modernist plans, often as industrial towns or satellite cities of historic cities. Today, many of these areas face social and demographic challenges, a fragile public image, and the need to redefine their identity. The initiative aims to explore new ways of telling the stories of these places and to rediscover the forms of collective life and creativity that have developed within them. The volume Telling the Story. New Towns, New Narratives, edited by ๐Œ๐ข๐œ๐ก๐ž๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ž ๐๐ซ๐จ๐ฏ๐จ๐จ๐ฌ๐ญ and ๐€๐ฅ๐ž๐ฑ ๐€๐ฑ๐ข๐ง๐ญ๐ž and published in 2025 by the International New Town Institute (INTI), is the result of the shared concerns of the project partners. The texts illustrate various ways to shift the tone and perspective of the usual narratives - often marked by stigmatization - through which these neighbourhoods are represented. The editorial approach draws on the research and activation project, as well as on the extensive experience gained in the field by those involved in local cultural and community life.

The exhibition features materials from the OPEN Garage archive, the Map of Collective Practices in the Buclฤƒ (The Loop), and a series of videos directed by ๐ˆ๐ฅ๐ž๐š๐ง๐š ๐’๐ณ๐š๐ฌ๐ณ documenting the researched themes.

De obicei, acestea sรฎnt considerate oraศ™e fฤƒrฤƒ istorie ศ™i identitate, รฎn care locuitorii doar trฤƒiesc, fฤƒrฤƒ a se simศ›i aparศ›inรฎnd acelui loc. รŽnsฤƒ, dupฤƒ mai bine de jumฤƒtate de secol, aceste oraศ™e au existat suficient de mult timp pentru a-ศ™i construi o istorie complexฤƒ, deศ™i aceasta este adesea necunoscutฤƒ atรฎt pentru strฤƒini, cรฎt ศ™i pentru locuitori.
รŽn ultimii doi ani, oraศ™ele noi din toatฤƒ Europa au รฎncercat sฤƒ-ศ™i identifice povestea prin proiectul ๐๐ž๐ฐ ๐“๐จ๐ฐ๐ง๐ฌ | ๐๐ž๐ฐ ๐๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐ž๐ฌ.๏ฟฝ๏ฟฝ
รŽn toate aceste oraศ™e noi s-au dezvoltat forme particulare de viaศ›ฤƒ colectivฤƒ ศ™i creativitate individualฤƒ, adesea รฎn spaศ›iile lฤƒsate libere de instituศ›iile oficiale. โ€žPovestireaโ€ acestor oraศ™e ศ™i a tuturor locuitorilor lor oferฤƒ o bazฤƒ pentru gฤƒsirea identitฤƒศ›ii lor ศ™i pentru reinventarea lor รฎntr-un mod pozitiv.

I am very happy that this book was published and launched at the end of 2025, as a first result of the Towns | New New Towns New Narratives project, to which I contributed in terms of editing and content, together with a wonderful team passionate about the legacy and the future of New Towns. We enjoyed extremely diverse contributions, both regionally - from all corners of Europe - and disciplinary - ranging from architectural historians, researchers, architects, and urban planners to artists, curators, cultural managers, and public officials.

More than 200 so called New Towns have been built in Europe in the twentieth Century. Usually, they are seen as cities without history and identity, where residents merely reside, without belonging. But after more than half a Century, these cities have existed long enough to build up a layered history, though it is often unknown to both outsiders and residents.
Some of these cities were built as nuclear cities or they housed the workers in the nearby harbour or mining industry. Some were flagship projects in the Cold war stand-off between Eastern and Western Europe. Others housed the overflow of people in big metropolises. While many fulfilled the promise of public housing as a right, rather than an economic merit, providing equitable infrastructure for living together. In the past two years New Towns from all over Europe tried to identify their story through the project
In all of these New Towns, particular forms of collective life and individual creativity developed, often in the cracks left by the official institutions. โ€˜Telling the Storyโ€™ of these cities and all its residents gives a basis to finding their identity and to reinvent themselves positively. From historic to art exhibitions, from festivals to walks and tours, from new collective spaces to research projects, the examples in this publication show the many new endeavours in European New Towns -from the UK to Bulgaria- to change the perception of these neglected cities.

bibelou ศ™i mileu din colecศ›ia Garaj DESCHIS (2020-2025)

De-a lungul timpului, ele au cฤƒpฤƒtat o semnificaศ›ie personalฤƒ, devenind dispozitive de memorie, aศ™a cm รฎศ™i aminteศ™te o contabilฤƒ pensionatฤƒ cรฎnd priveศ™te unul dintre bibeloruile din colecศ›ie:
โ€œDe ziua mea l-am primit de la fetele de la birou. L-au luat din centru, de la Romarta. Vezi ce frumos e? A fost cu mine atรฎศ›ia ani. ศ˜i la cutremur. Atรฎta s-a miศ™cat vitrina ศ™i el n-a cฤƒzut. Dar s-a spart televizorul. Ne uitam la un film la bulgari. Ce tare s-a simศ›it la etajul 10! Mergeam รฎn patru labe pe hol. ศ˜i pe urmฤƒ, am mers pe jos pรฎnฤƒ รฎn centru.โ€ (B.M, 2021)
Un studiu publicat รฎn revista Arhitectura 5/1973 despre stilul de viaศ›ฤƒ al locuitorilor din Drumul Taberei รฎn noile lor blocuri de apartamente a concluzionat cฤƒ semnificaศ›ia ritual-simbolicฤƒ a obiectelor a prevalat adesea asupra ipotezelor arhitecศ›ilor de a realiza o organizare spaศ›ialฤƒ modernฤƒ, eficientฤƒ ศ™i utilitarฤƒ. Spaศ›iile interioare, precum ศ™i cele exterioare, erau astfel โ€žtrฤƒiteโ€ dincolo de standarde, norme ศ™i viziuni tehnocratice impuse de sus รฎn jos.

Lucrarea a constituit โ€žsuvenirulโ€ ce a ilustrat cartierului Drumul Taberei la expoziศ›ia finalฤƒ a proiectului New Towns New Narratives, coordonat de International International New Town Institute (INTI) ศ™i finanศ›at de Uniunea Europeanฤƒ รฎn programul CERV. รŽmpreunฤƒ cu lucrฤƒrile artiศ™tilor Ana Kun ศ™i alexandra coroi & bogdan dumitrescu, au ilustrat trฤƒsฤƒturile cartierului, pe baza proiectului Garaj DESCHIS/ OPEN Garage (2020-2025) ศ™i รฎn parteneriat cu USAMV Bucureศ™ti ศ™i Oraศ™ รฎn buclฤƒ. Expoziศ›ia face parte din proiectul Ab Initio - an urban utopia, care, รฎn cadrul Capitalei Europene a Culturii GO! 2025, exploreazฤƒ modul รฎn care memoria ศ™i povestirea devin fundamentul comunitฤƒศ›ii ศ™i culturii.

knick-knack and embroidery from the OPEN Garage collection (2020-2025)

Furniture, books, clothes or toys that are no longer needed have to make room for newer ones. So, from time to time, various objects appear on the street corners. This is one of them. Itโ€™s a knick-knack, representing a dog in a playful position, recovered from the trash in Drumul Taberei district in 2021. A mass product of socialist industry, just like the modern furniture, the standardised apartments or the new towns, knick-knacks were used by dwellers for taming and domesticating a prefabricated environment. For the pioneers who moved here from the beginning of the district, these objects were among the first things that helped them make a home. Over time, they gained personal significance, becoming memory devices, a as a retired accountant recalls when she looks at one of the knick-knacks from her collection:
โ€œI got it for my birthday from the girls at the office. They bought it downtown, from the Romarta store. See how beautiful it is? Itโ€™s been with me for so many years. Even during the 1977 earthquake. The display case shook so much, but it didn't fall. But the TV broke. We were watching a movie on Bulgarian television. It felt so strong on the 10th floor! We crawled on all fours down the hallway." (B.M, 2021)
A study published in Arhitectura magazine 5/1973 on the lifestyle of Drumul Taberei residents in their new apartment blocs concluded that the ritual-symbolic significance of the objects often prevailed over the architectsโ€™ assumptions of achieving a modern, efficient and utilitarian spatial organization. Interior spaces, as well as exterior ones, were thus 'lived' beyond the standards, the norms, and top-down technocratic visions. Over time, a series of creative and disobedient informal practices have transformed the district at scale, becoming a way of life for its inhabitants (Alex Axinte).

The work was the "souvenir" that represented the Drumul Taberei district at the final exhibition of the New Towns | New New Towns New Narratives project, coordinated by the International New Town Institute (INTI) and funded by the European Union under the CERV program. Together with the works of artists Ana Kun and alexandra coroi & bogdan dumitrescu, they illustrated the districtโ€™ features, based on the Garaj DESCHIS/ OPEN Garage (2020-2025) project and in partnership with USAMV Bucharest and Oraศ™ รฎn Buclฤƒ. The exhibition was timed to coincide with the launch of the book Telling the Story, which took place on October 15-17, 2025, at EPICenter in Nova Gorica, Slovenia. The exhibition is part of the Initio - an urban utopia project, which, within the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, explores how memory and storytelling become the foundation of community and culture.

รŽn gazon/gazon, repetiศ›ia aceluiaศ™i cuvรขnt creeazฤƒ un ritm plฤƒcut estetic fฤƒrฤƒ sฤƒ creeze variaศ›ie sau diferenศ›ฤƒ, asta pรขnฤƒ cรขnd acest โ€žacelaศ™iโ€ nu se supra-aglomereazฤƒ ศ™i nu se suprapune. Existฤƒ รฎn lucrarea asta mai multe prototipuri de plante, fiecare cu atribute, forme ศ™i densitฤƒศ›i specifice, care amplasate รฎntr-un mod aleatoriu-controlat, cautฤƒ sฤƒ sugereze agitaศ›ia, forfota, varietatea ศ™i diferenศ›a regฤƒsitฤƒ รฎntr-o pajiศ™te cu flori de cรขmp sau un petic de pฤƒmรขnt lฤƒsat neรฎngrijit. รŽn sfรขrศ™it, poemul aduce pe de-o parte o imagine a acestei lumi geometrizate, lipsite de haos, ศ™i pe de altฤƒ parte, oferฤƒ รฎn oglindฤƒ o alternativฤƒ. รŽn plus, continuฤƒ seria naraศ›iunilor imaginare despre Drumul Taberei pornitฤƒ รฎn timpul rezidenศ›ei ศ™i abordeazฤƒ nevoia comunitฤƒศ›ii de a interveni รฎn personalizarea propriului spaศ›iu ศ™i de a proteja creศ™terea spontanฤƒ a vegetaศ›iei ( coroi & dumitrescu).

Proiectul a fost realizat รฎn cadrul programului Towns | New New Towns New Narratives, coordonat de International New Town Institute (INTI) ศ™i finanศ›at de Uniunea Europeanฤƒ รฎn programul CERV ศ™i au fost inspirate de tema โ€šPractici Informale (verzi)โ€™ a Laboratorului #3 ce a avut loc la Bucureศ™ti รฎn 2024, organizat pe baza proiectului Garaj Deschis / OPEN Garage (2020-2025), รฎn parteneriat cu USAMV Bucureศ™ti ศ™i Oraศ™ รฎn buclฤƒ.
Lucrarea a fฤƒcut parte din expoziศ›ia finalฤƒ a proiectului, prilejuitฤƒ de lansarea cฤƒrศ›ii Telling the Story, ce a avut loc pe 15-17 Octombrie 2025 la EPICenter รฎn Nova Gorica, Slovenia. Expoziศ›ia face parte din proiectul Ab Initio - o utopie urbanฤƒ, care, รฎn cadrul Capitalei Europene a Culturii GO! 2025, exploreazฤƒ modul รฎn care memoria ศ™i povestirea devin fundamentul comunitฤƒศ›ii ศ™i culturii.

**gazon means lawn in Romanian

The project grew out of the textures we had gathered during our residency in Drumul Taberei, from our wonderings through the neighbourhood and from some ideas we sketched back then. The visual works are based on the organic textures we've catalogued and they offer a visual-affective interpretation of them. In gazon/gazon, the repetition of the same word creates a pleasant aesthetic rhythm without introducing variations or difference, that is until this โ€œsamenessโ€ doesnโ€™t become over-saturated and doesnโ€™t begin to overlap. The perfect lawn, the endless fields of lavender or rapeseed are images of perfect repetition, devoid of any concept that might bring about difference and, though aesthetically pleasing, they are rather counter-images of the โ€œuntendedโ€ nature, which is far more diverse and uneven. gazonโ‰ gazon explores this idea of untamed nature and is build on repetition through difference. Here, we used the name of the plants found on the โ€œExperimental meadows for pollinators and Instagramโ€ in Drumul Taberei. The work includes several plant prototypes, each with its own attributes, forms and specific densities. Arranged in a randomly controlled manner, they aim to evoke the restlessness, bustle, variety and difference found in a wildflower meadow or a patch of unkept land. Finally, the poem offers, on the one hand, an image of this geometrized, chaos-free world and, on the other, it reflects, as in a mirror, an alternative. It also continues the series of imaginary narratives about Drumul Taberei that began during the residency, addressing the communityโ€™s need to intervene in the personalisation of their own space and to protect the spontaneous growth of vegetation.

The drawings were created as part of the New Towns | New Narratives program, coordinated by the International New Town Institute (INTI) and funded by the European Union under the CERV program and were inspired by the theme 'Informal (Green) Practices' of Laboratory #3, which took place in Bucharest in 2024, organized on the basis of the OPEN Garage (2020-2025) project, in partnership with USAMV Bucharest and Oraศ™ รฎn Buclฤƒ.

The exhibition is part of the Initio - an urban utopia project, which, within the European Capital of Culture GO! 2025, explores how memory and storytelling become the foundation of community and culture.
