AI for Humanity: A Shared Vision for the Digital Age

Pope Leo XIV’s first major moral reflection on artificial intelligence appears to closely echo Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s repeated calls for human-centric, ethical and inclusive AI governance, with both leaders warning that technology must serve people rather than reduce them to data, profit or power.

India's approach to AI governance—anchored in trust, safety, innovation, and the philosophy of "AI for All"— closely mirrors Pope Leo XIV's views on AI which places human dignity, truth, justice, freedom, work and peace at the centre of the AI debate. Together, their messages send a clear signal to the global community: ethics before efficiency, and humanity before technology.
Key commonalities guiding this vision include:

(i)AI must remain centred on the human person rather than the machine.

(ii) Technology must enhance, and never override, human judgment and responsibility.

(iii) Ethics in AI cannot be optional or limited.

(iv) AI must remain accessible to all, actively address bias, reduce inequalities, and empower the Global South.

On 16 May 2026, High Commissioner Mridu Pawan Das visited the Gisovu Tea Estate in Rwanda’s Western Province. Established in 1983, the estate spans 1,667 hectares and produces over 2.6 million kgs of premium tea annually. The Gisovu estate works closely with Coothegim, a cooperative of 3,300 small-holder farmers of Rwanda, and provides direct and indirect employment to more than 4,500 families.

Mr. Allan Mwangi, GM, and Mr. Nitin Kr. Singh, Manager, led the High Commissioner through all key units of the factory (Reception, Withering, Cutting, Oxidation, Drying, Sorting and Packaging, and Tea Tasting), and also through the picturesque tea plantation area.

Gisovu, along with Pfunda and Rugabano estates in the Western Province of Rwanda, and Sorwathe estate in the Northern Province, have a majority stake held by Luxmi Estates , a renowned Indian tea company which dates back to 1912. Collectively, the four estates are making a difference to the lives of more than 20,000 farmers and workers in Rwanda.
