Today marks the 80th birthday of HM King Carl XVI Gustaf👑

Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. According to the 1974 Instrument of Government, all public power proceeds from the people and must be exercised in accordance with the law. This form of government combines strong democratic institutions with a head of state who is above day-to-day political processes and acts as a unifying symbol of the country and its democratic institutions🇸🇪

The King’s role is clearly regulated in the Constitution of Sweden. As head of state, the King has no political powers, but carries out important ceremonial and representative duties. These include opening the session of the Riksdag, chairing the Council of State when there is a change of government, representing Sweden in state visits and receiving foreign ambassadors’ credentials. The role aims to create continuity, stability and confidence in public institutions - both nationally and internationally🌍

The Swedish monarchy builds on long historical experience, but is at the same time deeply rooted in modern democratic values. In 1974, the Instrument of Government clearly outlined the sovereignty of the people and the status of the parliamentary system, and streamlined the role of the head of state into unification, representation and safeguarding of the Constitution. In this context, the monarchy plays an important role as a symbol of the rule of law, openness and democratic accountability.

This day of celebration is an opportunity to highlight the Swedish social model, which combines democracy, the rule of law and constitutional monarchy – a form of that has served Sweden well and remains a foundation for stable governance and international confidence.

Recently, the Embassy of Sweden hosted, together with the Embassy of Luxembourg and , a roundtable discussion with public and private partners. Together we explored the topic of advancing digital inclusion and livelihoods through enhanced connectivity in refugee hosting areas.

The discussion drew on the new report “Access and Barriers to Connectivity and Digital Work for Refugees and Host Communities in Rwanda.” The Embassy is proud to see Ericsson among the contributors to the report — and to see them, alongside other partners, continue driving efforts to expand digital inclusion and livelihood opportunities in Rwanda 🇷🇼

Way forward: turn the insights into action by expanding market aligned digital skills training and job pathways, creating safe digital workspaces in refugee hosting areas, strengthening connectivity and Wi Fi access in underserved regions, and improving the affordability of devices and data through public and private sector partnerships 🌐🤝

Four years. 1,461 days.
Every day is one day too many.
Every life lost is one too many.
Every person who has been forced to flee their home.
Every child who has been abducted by Russia.
Every home, school and hospital without electricity and heating.

Russia must end its war. Only Ukraine has the right to decide on the future of Ukraine. The Ukrainian people have demonstrated incredible resilience, keeping their society going and keeping their hopes alive. Sweden stand steadfast by their side.
