Rwanda Water Resources Board, in collaboration with UNESCO, UN-Water and UN DESA, has convened a three-day High-Level Integrated Workshop on accelerating in Rwanda through capacity development, bringing together Government institutions, UN agencies, development partners, academia, the private sector, NGOs and civil society to identify key capacity gaps and agree on practical actions to accelerate Rwanda’s progress towards SDG6 by 2030.

Opening the workshop, RWB's Executive Chairperson, Eng. Richard Nyirishema emphasized: “Our objective is not only to identify challenges, but to propose clear and implementable solutions.”

Today, , in collaboration with the African Development Bank Group, hosted the Launching workshop for the Muvumba Multipurpose Water Resources Development Program – Additional Financing.

This project to be implemented in partnership with
Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development BoardI RAB will focus on irrigating 3,073 hectares of farmland in
Nyagatare District. It represents a key downstream investment linked to the Muvumba Multipurpose Dam, which is expected to be completed in early 2027.

The Executive Chairperson of the Rwanda Water Resources Board, Eng. Richard Nyirishema underscored the project’s importance, noting: “We can have the infrastructure, but as long as the water is not reaching the population either through water supply or irrigation, the full potential of the dam will not be realized.”

Once completed Muvumba Multipurpose Dam will store 55 million m³ of water to generate 1 MW of hydropower, irrigate 11,000 Ha, & supply 50,000 m³ of domestic water daily.

Today, RWB welcomed a delegation from the Ministry of Energy and Water Resources of the Federal Republic of Somalia for a knowledge-sharing visit on water resources management.

The delegation learned about Rwanda’s hydrological monitoring systems, water data management platforms, and operational practices, including a field visit to a hydrological monitoring station.

Today, the Senior Management of the Rwanda Water Resources Board (RWB) held discussions with the team on the implementation of the Volcano Community Resilience Project ( ), which is being implemented in collaboration with various partner institutions.

Under the project, is responsible for implementing the Flood Risk Management and Catchment Management Restoration and Land Restoration components.
