SITHP teams are working with communities in Western Province to clarify land ownership and support the transfer of Perpetual Estate titles.

This work is an essential step in preparing sites like Olasana and Varu for future tourism investment, and ensuring that land is legally secure, clearly documented, and ready for opportunity.

Through practical, hands-on sessions and ongoing support, families are now gaining a better understanding of the process and taking active steps to gather the required documents and initiate transfers.

By strengthening land clarity today, communities lay the foundation for future economic opportunities and tourism development.

“Our work aims to assist Solomon Islanders maximize benefits from their forest resources through other forms of forest utilization and management, beyond logging,” says SITHP Co-Facilitator, Patricia Sango Pollard.

Patricia supports SITHP’s facilitated governance reform approach — a practical, step‑by‑step process that brings government, landowners, and partners together to identify what’s holding back investment and then work collectively to remove those barriers. This includes strengthening access to land, improving forest utilization systems, and enabling new tourism investment opportunities.

“When barriers are removed, Solomon Islanders can benefit more from their forests and tourism investments,” says Patricia. “This work helps the country to realize its full potential, with greater economic returns to citizens.”

By the end of 2026, Patricia is excited to see policy reforms in place that unlock large-scale tourism investments and better support to forest management.

“The work we do under SITHP helps investors and landowners to invest and operate tourism and forest businesses in a fair and transparent way,” says Joe Waleanisia, SITHP Senior Facilitator.

Land and forest management laws and processes in Solomon Islands can be tough to navigate. SITHP uses a problem-solving, partnership-driven approach that brings together government, implementing partners, and local communities to identify what’s slowing investment and removes those barriers. This approach helps make land access clearer, speeds up approvals, and opens the door for new tourism and forest‑based economic opportunities.

The facilitative approach is helping to support responsible forest use while increasing tourism investment. When land issues are resolved, tourism investors can build a lodge, guesthouse, or eco-resort on agreed land—creating more jobs and income for local communities.

“This creates jobs for villagers, and the community earns regular income from land lease payments,” says Joe.

Similarly, when policies and rules are clear, forests can be managed more responsibly and profitably.

“Communities earn money from carbon trade by protecting forests. This money can pay school fees, support businesses, fishing ventures, water systems, and community projects.”

Joe’s work brings clarity and fairness to the system, giving communities the tools they need to steward their natural resources for stronger, long-term economic returns for Solomon Islands.

Growing tourism in the Solomon Islands is vital to creating jobs, supporting communities, and building a more resilient economy.

With visitor numbers to the Pacific down compared to pre-COVID levels, the small island nation is on the front-foot to create real opportunities for communities, jobs for locals, and a stronger economy over the long term.

This week, leaders from government, development partners, and the private sector reconvened in Honiara for the quarterly Tourism Investment Task Force to further progress on the Accessing Land for Tourism Investment Facilitation (ALTIF) project.

Their shared goal: make tourism investment easier, more coordinated, and more responsive to the needs of communities and investors alike.

Permanent Secretary Bunyan Sivoro of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, chair of the Task Force, highlighted the importance of building systems that will last beyond the life of SITHP, so future tourism development can continue to support Solomon Islanders well into the future.

“Over time we are expecting more investors to come. Our aim is to address land access issues early, so investors and communities can move forward with greater clarity and confidence,” he said.

The task force also reaffirmed the value of strong coordination across ministries and partners to help remove barriers to responsible investment. This work, funded by the American people through the Millennium Challenge Corporation - MCC, reflects the U.S. commitment to advancing economic partnerships that promote regional stability and open new opportunities for American businesses.

The Yato Conservation Area in East Makira was officially declared the largest terrestrial protected area in the Solomon Islands during a landmark ceremony in Kirakira.

Spanning approximately 10,000 hectares, the site is owned by five communities from the Atawa and Amwea tribes who have banned logging and mining to safeguard their land for future generations.

Supported by international partners including the Millennium Challenge Corporation, Nakau, Live & Learn, and the government through the Ministry of Environment, this achievement allows local tribes to access new economic opportunities like performance-based forest finance.
