On this day in 1943, Signalman First Class Douglas Munro was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor, for extraordinary heroism and conspicuous gallantry in action above and beyond the call of duty as Officer-in-Charge of a group of Higgins boats, engaged in the evacuation of a Battalion of Marines trapped by enemy Japanese forces at Point Cruz, Guadalcanal, on September 27, 1942. Munro is the only member of the U.S. Coast Guard to have received the Medal of Honor. Visiting Coast Guard personnel and Embassy Honiara cleaned the Douglas Munro memorial at the Honiara Yacht Club a tribute to U.S.-Solomon Islands shared history.

Coming soon! The U.S. Government’s Disaster Assistance Team (EDAT) is partnering with the Solomon Islands Geological Survey Department to install new earthquake monitoring stations later this year. Both teams met this week to finish planning for the new set-ups stations, which will help us detect and report damaging earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes faster - keeping communities safe both locally and worldwide. Together, Americans and Solomon Islanders are deepening cooperation to make our nations safer, stronger, and more prosperous.

A joint effort supported by the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Geological Survey, EDAT provides global life-saving earthquake technical assistance before, during, and after disasters. EDAT is working across the South Pacific to boost earthquake and tsunami readiness. By installing new monitoring stations and training local experts, EDAT builds rapid warning systems that protect both Pacific communities and the U.S. from major disasters. This collaborative project strengthens regional networks, improves emergency response, and helps keep our citizens safer and more prepared for global hazards.
