The National Disaster Council (NDC) through the National Disaster Operations Committee (N-DOC) in coordination with Provincial Disaster Committees (PDC) and Provincial Disaster Operations Committees (P-DOCs) for Western, Choiseul, Isabel, Central and Guadalcanal continues to undertake TC Maila disaster response efforts to address impacts and stabilised critical services including Health, Education and Livelihood services.

The Western P-DOC through its Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) in Gizo continues to coordinate TC Maila response efforts, working with national teams to prioritise actions, collect damage assessments, and support early recovery.

According to the Western Province SITREP latest report, PEOC in Gizo has carried out various important assessments on the following areas;

๐—œ๐—ป ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜๐—ต ๐˜€๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ, disease surveillance is active across four sites, recording 195 patient encounters. Malaria (32%), prolonged fever (32%), and acute diarrhoea (27%) are the most commonly reported syndromes, with malaria and influenza-like illness increasing among children under five.

The report stated that damage to health facilities and cold chain systems poses ongoing risks, while food shortages raise concerns about child malnutrition.

Two schools remain occupied as displacement camps, delaying reopening. Schools are classified into Green (open), Yellow (short closures) and Red (closed pending safety clearance) zones.

It added that displaced families, mainly women and children, sheltering at the Gizo Resource Centre lack adequate water, food and supplies. No gender-based violence cases have been formally reported, though access limitations affect monitoring.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the N-DOC Mr. Jonathan Tafiariki commended the hard-working P-DOC and disaster response teams and members from all Sector Agencies on the ground.

โ€œThe Chair for N-DOC urge Sector Leads and Agencies to continue provide their situational updates and report daily to the NEOC and PEOCs as are very vital reports that will continue to guide P-DOC and N-DOC and other stakeholders on how we can continue to collaborate and working together to assist the victims of TC Maila and then move into the next stage, which is the recovery process,โ€ he added.

The PEOC remains the central hub for provincial response, coordinating with national authorities to address resource gaps and support affected communities.

Honiara, Solomon Islands - The Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) in Western Province is making progress in its response to the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Maila, with Initial Damage Assessment (IDA) teams deployed to affected areas and relief supplies being distributed.

According to situation reports from Gizo, two IDA field assessment teams were deployed to Simbo on April 25, with two more teams deployed to Rannonga and Vella Islands. The teams are conducting field assessments using Kobo-based tools, with data collection currently underway.

The logistics team is working tirelessly to manage warehousing, transportation, and liaising with Livelihood, Health, and NGOs for stocking replenishment of Non-Food Items (NFIs) and food relief.

The teams are working around the clock to ensure that relief supplies reach those in need.

The Western Provincial Emergency Operations Centre (PEOC) is grateful for the support from partners, including the Solomon Islands Red Cross, World Vision, and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

The Provincial Health Team is continuing response operations, providing outpatient and ward services, while the Provincial Infrastructure Division has undertaken repairs and maintenance at the PEOC building premises in Gizo.

However, challenges remain, including a shortage of computers and equipment at the PEOC, network issues and power constraints in the field, and staff shortages in the health sector.

Despite these challenges, the PEOC is pushing forward with its response efforts, with plans to deploy additional IDA teams and distribute more relief supplies in the coming days.

The State of Disaster declared on April 10, 2026, for Western and Choiseul Provinces remains in effect.

Honiara, Solomon Islands โ€“ The Director of the National Disaster Council (NDC) and Chairman of the National Disaster Operation Centre (N-DOC), Mr Jonathan Tafiariki, presented the Tropical Cyclone Maila Emergency Response and Recovery Plan at the Development Partners Dialogue on Fuel Price Impacts and Tropical Cyclone Maila Response, held on Wednesday, 29 April 2026.

Mr Tafiariki outlined the national disaster response and the Early Recovery Plan Action 2026, emphasising the application of national disaster arrangements to implement the plan.

He highlighted that the plan's framework includes saving lives and protecting affected populations, providing immediate life-saving assistance โ€“ food, water, education, health, shelter, and protection services, coordinating initial damage assessments and essential services, and supporting early recovery and livelihood restoration.

He acknowledged donor partners and stakeholders for their support in the emergency relief response rollout since the declaration of a state of emergency for Western and Choiseul provinces on April 10.

Prime Minister Manele announced that the Cabinet has approved the National Response and Early Recovery Plan (NRERP), with an estimated total cost of SBD 118.7 million, of which approximately 92 per cent remains unfunded.

He called on development partners to extend financial and technical support to bridge this funding gap, facilitating timely and effective recovery interventions.

SOLOMON ISLANDS RECEIVES USD500,000 PCRIC PAYOUT CYCLONE MAILA ASSISTANCE
The Solomon Islands Government, through the Ministry of Finance and Treasury, received a USD 500,000 payout from the Pacific Catastrophe Risk Insurance Company (PCRIC) following the impacts of Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The payout was officially presented by PCRIC CEO Aholotu Palu to the Honourable Minister of Finance and Treasury, Rexon Annex Ramofafia, with the presence of Permanent Secretary Mckinnie Dentana and Deputy Secretary Technical, Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, Disaster Management and Meteorology, Agnetha Vave Karamui on Thursday 23 April.
Tropical Cyclone Maila caused significant impacts across Western, Choiseul, and Isabel Provinces, prompting the declaration of a State of Emergency. The payout received highlights the importance of pre-arranged finance in providing immediate financial protection against natural disasters and supporting government relief efforts. This marks an important milestone for the Government in securing national parametric insurance cover, given the frequency and severity of cyclones in the region. PCRICโ€™s risk transfer mechanism directly supports the implementation of the Governmentโ€™s Disaster Risk Financing (DRF) Strategy 2024โ€“2027.
Through this partnership, the Government has secured insurance coverage for four major hazards: tropical cyclones, tsunamis, heavy rainfall, and earthquakes, in November, 2025, with a premium of USD$125,000 that covers these four major hazards. This demonstrates the value of proactive disaster risk financing preparedness.
Speaking during the presentation, the Honourable Minister of Finance and Treasury acknowledged PCRICโ€™s critical role in supporting the countryโ€™s financial preparedness and strengthening governmentโ€™s, fiscal resilience agenda.
โ€œThis payout demonstrates that our proactive investment in disaster risk financing is delivering real and timely support to our people. It enables the Government to respond quickly to the needs of affected communities and strengthens our overall resilience,โ€ the Minister said.
The Minister further expressed appreciation to PCRIC for its ongoing technical and financial support in establishing a robust financial protection framework for Solomon Islands.
โ€œWe acknowledge PCRIC as a valued partner in helping Solomon Islands build resilience against climate and disaster risks. We look forward to strengthening this collaboration in the years ahead, according to the Minister.โ€
The funds will be used to support early response and recovery efforts, ensuring that assistance is delivered efficiently to communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Maila.
The Solomon Islands Government reaffirmed its commitment to advancing innovative disaster risk financing solutions and strengthening partnerships that safeguard the nationโ€™s economic stability and community resilience.
