Last week, LMU hosted a Returned Worker Feedback Session, bringing together recently returned workers to introduce the Solomon Islands Economic Reintegration Strategy (SIERS) and its key thematic areas.
The session provided a valuable platform for participants to share their experiences, insights, and recommendations on how LMU and service providers can better support workers and their families.
Together, we continue to strengthen pathways for sustainable reintegration and inclusive development.

Another group of selected workers from the LMU's work ready pool have successfully completed their forklift driving training at Hasting Deering last week.
The cohort comprising of three males and three females attended two days of theory classes and on the final day finished off with the handling & operating class.
LMU interviewed two workers (male & female) and asked them about their views on how and what this training means to them individually.
Both workers also acknowledged the opportunity provided and are really grateful.

A meat work preparatory training was organized in Honiara this past week by the Pacific Australia Skills in collaboration with the Labour Mobility Unit (LMU).

The comprehensive three-day training session focused on workplace safety, hygiene, and industry readiness has successfully prepared a new group of participants for entry into the meat processing industry.

The training program was led by industry trainer Aika Purai, introduced participants to the fundamentals of the meat industry with a strong emphasis on workplace health and safety practices.

โ€œAll participants in this group were new to the industry, so the training started with a full overview of what the meat industry is about,โ€ Mr Purai said.

โ€œThe goal was to ensure they understood not only the technical aspects of the work, but also the importance of maintaining safety at all times.โ€

Throughout the program, participants received instruction on:

โ€ข Workplace health and safety
โ€ข Hygiene and sanitation practices
โ€ข Quality assurance standards
โ€ข Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
โ€ข Knife sharpening and safe equipment handling

According to Purai, safety was the central focus of the training due to the practical and manual nature of meat processing work.

โ€œThe knife is one of the most commonly used tools in the industry, so understanding how to use and maintain it safely is extremely important,โ€ Purai explained.

โ€œBefore workers enter the industry, they need to develop a safety-conscious mindset. Their families want them to return home safely every day.โ€

Training participant, Kopae Leric Jugha said he is excited to be part of the training.

โ€œThis will assist us to learn before being deployed to Australia, to understand the safety components and the challenges that comes with that work,โ€ He added.

The program also highlighted the importance of product quality and proper handling standards, ensuring participants understood their role in maintaining consumer safety and industry expectations.

Established as a family-owned meat wholesaler in 1953, Kilcoy Global Foods has grown to become one of the worldโ€™s top food solutions producers recognized for quality and innovation. With operations in Australia, North America, and China, their unwavering focus on quality has created a portfolio of multi-award-winning brands.
Kilcoy recruited its first workers from Solomon Islands in 2020 through a Labour Hire company but has since became an Approved Employer for PALM and is now doing its own in-country recruitments across different countries in the region.
This is however, their first time to recruit directly from the Solomons.
Leah Swane and Young Kang, Kilcoy representatives said that they have been very happy with the interviews done and further added that they are looking at increasing the numbers when they return.
They have interviewed more than a hundred candidates shortlisted from the work ready pool last week and will be selecting around fifty workers to work in Australia.
Successful candidates will be working at 4830 D'Aguilar Hwy, Winya QLD 4515 which is an hour's drive to Brisbane.
LMU is very happy to welcome Kilcoy on their first in-country recruitment drive and also would like to acknowledge them for choosing Solomon Islands and hopes to see further collaboration continues into the future.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade has successfully concluded a scoping mission to Nauru aimed at advancing discussions on the Intra-Pacific Labour Mobility Arrangement.

The mission focused on identifying opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address labour shortages in key sectors, including education, construction, and health.

During the visit, Ministry officials engaged in productive discussions with counterparts from Nauruโ€™s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Labour Mobility Unit, education authorities, and representatives from the private sector. These engagements explored practical avenues for collaboration to support Nauruโ€™s workforce needs while creating meaningful employment opportunities for Solomon Islanders.

A key outcome of the mission was the Government of Nauruโ€™s strong interest in progressing Bilateral Arrangements with Solomon Islands. The proposed Arrangements will establish a formal bilateral framework to safeguard Solomon Islanders working in Nauru, recognize existing recruitment arrangements, and facilitate future labour mobility initiatives.

Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Mr. George Hickson, welcomed the positive engagement.

โ€œThe positive response from the Nauruan Government underscores our shared commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring safe and mutually beneficial labour mobility opportunities for our people,โ€ he said.

The mission also included consultations with more than 50 Solomon Islanders currently employed in Nauru, including teachers, nurses, doctors, and construction workers.

Participants shared valuable insights and experiences, and commended the Government for its efforts to engage directly with them and incorporate their feedback into the broader labour mobility framework.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade remains committed to advancing regional partnerships that promote economic growth, skills development, and shared prosperity across the Pacific.
