A public speaking competition on the theme “Innovative Ways to Attract Youth to Essential Shift-Based Jobs” concluded the series of activities organised by the Ministry of Employment and Human Resource Planning throughout May to commemorate Labour Day.
Teams of three students from Belonie, Perseverance, Anse Royale, and Mont Fleuri Secondary Schools participated, alongside representatives from the School of Advanced Level Studies (SALS), Seychelles Business Studies Academy (SBSA), Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA), National Institute of Health and Social Studies (NIHSS), and Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (SITE) in the upper secondary and professional institutions category.
The young participants presented creative ideas to encourage more youth to join essential shift-based professions, while highlighting workforce opportunities and challenges. They observed a disconnect between young people’s expectations and the realities of the workplace. It was noted that youth are not necessarily reluctant to work shifts, but struggle with outdated schedules, lack of innovation, repetitive tasks, eventual burnout, limited career growth, and restricted opportunities.
Suggestions included exposing students to workplaces to reduce mismatches between expectations and reality, modernising shift-based jobs through technology to better manage irregular hours, and fostering workplace environments where young people can thrive.
After an engaging competition and careful deliberation by a panel of three judges, prizes were awarded as follows:
Secondary School Category
• 1st Prize – Belonie School
• 2nd Prize – Mont Fleuri School
• 3rd Prize - Perseverance School
Upper Secondary / Professional Centres
• 1st Prize – Seychelles Tourism Academy (STA)
• 2nd Prize – Seychelles Institute of Teacher Education (SITE)
• 3rd Prize – Seychelles Business Studies Academy (SBSA)
Mont Fleuri School won awards for Best Speaker and Best Introductory Speaker in the secondary school category, while STA received the same honours in the upper secondary/professional category.
Belonie School earned Best Closing Speaker in the secondary category, and SBSA took Best Closing Speaker in the professional category.
Promise Gwokyalya from Mont Fleuri School and Yasmine Anacoura from the Seychelles Tourism Academy were recognised as best speakers.
The judging panel, consisting of Ms. Diana Quatre, Ms. Lynn Bilal, and Mr. Terence Crea, each received a token of appreciation. The Ministry also recognised sponsors H. Savy Insurance, SACOS, Techmart Seychelles, Chanterelle Bookshop and Arc Ventures Ltd for their support.
Minister Idith Alexander officially declared the conclusion of Labour Day 2026 activities at the end of the competition.
