🌱 More mangroves planted!

More than 500 Red Mangrove seedlings have been planted at Cap Ternay under the Ridge to Reef (R2R) Project, helping to restore this important coastal ecosystem and strengthening resilience to climate change.

Building on earlier work to remove invasive species and restore the wetland, the initiative supports the recovery of an ecosystem that protects our coastlines, stores carbon, improves water quality, and provides habitat for marine life.

Together, we're investing in healthier ecosystems and a more sustainable future for Seychelles. 🌿

🚲 Powering a greener La Digue!

The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources today handed over eleven battery-powered bicycles to government ministries and agencies on La Digue, supporting cleaner, more sustainable transport across the island. The recipient included Landscape and Waste Management Agency , Seychelles Police Force SFRSA Family Department SPGA - Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority

The bicycles, donated by the Chinese Embassy in Seychelles in Seychelles under the South-South Cooperation Low-Carbon Demonstration and Ozone Initiative, will help frontline officers carry out their daily work more efficiently while reducing fuel use and carbon emissions.

This initiative builds on the Ministry's ongoing sustainability efforts on La Digue, including the successful PET bottle collection programme, reinforcing the message that small actions can make a big difference in protecting our environment.

Thank you Minister Evelyne Rose, Ministry of Local Government and Inner islands for your support.

Together, we're moving towards a cleaner, greener and more resilient Seychelles. 🌿

🌳 Dangerous Tree Cutting Training

In Seychelles, you cannot just cut down a tree even if it is on your own property. Read more. 👇👇

The Forestry Division recently teamed up with Ministry of Local Government and Inner Islands and Department of Risk & Disaster Management - DRDM to conduct a training on how to handle request to cut or control dangerous trees in the community. This training was aimed at District Administrators and technical officers of the different district on Mahe.

This is in line with the recent agreement that the Ministry will only be responsible for requests that affects the 30 trees listed as protected under the Breadfruit and Other Trees (Protection) Act.

This training was a first step for these district representatives to improve their knowledge of these protected species, promote safe tree-cutting practices and enhance the capacity of district teams to respond effectively to hazardous trees.

🌿 By investing in capacity building, we are strengthening public safety while ensuring the sustainable management of Seychelles' urban and natural landscapes.

News from the field.

At the beginning of last month, the Biodiversity Conservation Management Division (BCM), in collaboration with the ICS Seychelles Idc Seychelles , and Bird Island undertook the annual Sooty Tern census.

This is an important monitoring activity that is conducted each year to assess the status and trend of the population.

As part of this initiative, our team were deployed to several islands where the Sooty Tern (Onychoprion fuscatus) breeds.

During the census, officers collected data on colony size, nesting success, breeding activity, and overall population trends. These information are essential for monitoring the health of the species, guiding conservation and management decisions, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the population.

This year’s census is particularly significant as it coincides with the resumption of the Sooty Tern egg harvesting. The census provides critical scientific data that helps inform the sustainable management of the harvest while ensuring that conservation measures remain effective and that breeding populations continue to be protected.

The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy, and Natural Resources remains committed to working closely with its conservation partners to safeguard Seychelles’ unique biodiversity through science-based monitoring and collaborative management.

🔥 Fire Ban Remains in Force Across Seychelles

The Ministry of Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources reminds the public that the ban on lighting fires remains in effect until further notice.

The current dry conditions significantly increase the risk of bush and forest fires, putting lives, property, biodiversity and natural habitats at risk. Even a small fire can spread rapidly, causing extensive environmental damage.

🚫 During the fire ban, please do not:
• Light garden or rubbish fires
• Burn vegetation or agricultural waste
• Leave campfires or charcoal fires unattended
• Discard lit ci******es in dry vegetation

Every person has a role to play in protecting our islands.
If you see smoke or an unattended fire, report it immediately to the relevant authorities.
Together, we can help prevent wildfires and safeguard Seychelles' forests, wildlife and communities.

🌿 Protect Nature. Prevent Fires. Stay Safe.

🌏🇸🇨Seychelles Strengthens Environmental Cooperation with La Réunion

From 13th –15th July, the Minister for Environment, Climate, Energy and Natural Resources, Ms Marie-May Jeremie joined the President of the Republic, Dr Patrick Herminie State House Seychelles , Mrs Veronique Herminie Office of the First Lady, Republic of Seychelles and other members of the Cabinet on an official visit to La Reunion, where they participated in celebrations of La Bastille Day.

In the margins of this official visit, Minister Jeremie held several bilateral meetings with key stakeholders involved in leading environmental and renewable energy initiatives.

The highlight of these meeting was with one of the largest photovoltaic manufacturing facilities in the Indian Ocean, where she learned first-hand about the island's integration of renewable energy into the energy mix of Reunion’s electricity network.

The Minister also visited several sites showcasing innovative approaches to environmental management and ecological restoration projects aimed at safeguarding freshwater ecosystems. Due to limited time availability of time the Minister and counterparts in Reunion has agreed that subsequent technical meetings and visits will be undertaken to further solidify key areas of collaboration between Seychelles and Reunion.

Reflecting on the visit, Minister Jeremie said:

"I was particularly impressed by La Réunion's progress in renewable energy, especially its ability to manufacture photovoltaic panels locally and generate electricity from bagasse, biofuels and even waste. These are areas where we see great potential for cooperation and knowledge exchange as Seychelles continues its transition to renewable energy. We also gained valuable insights into invasive species management, and we look forward to strengthening collaboration in this field."

The visit reaffirmed the importance of regional partnerships and knowledge sharing as Seychelles continues to advance its goals in renewable energy, biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
