Activities for World Biodiversity Day continued with the monitoring and data collection of the 'Letyopi River' at Grand Anse, in collaboration with Gaea Seychelles and students from Anse Boileau Secondary School. 🌿💧

This initiative forms part of the Department of Energy and Climate Affairs' ongoing efforts to monitor freshwater ecosystems, promote environmental stewardship, and engage young people in biodiversity conservation.

🌊 Au Cap Coastal Protection Project Completed

The Au Cap coastal project has officially been completed by the Ministry.

Ongoing monitoring of the coastline will continue, especially during the south-east monsoon , alongside planned rehabilitation works on the landfill area behind the newly constructed seawall.

In recent years, the Au Cap coastal road has been heavily impacted by coastal erosion linked to rising sea levels.

This project was implemented as an important mitigation measure to protect critical infrastructure and safeguard the local community.

Praslin Island unites for Biodiversity. 🌿

As part of our Biodiversity activities, the Ministry in collaboration with SPGA - Seychelles Parks and Gardens Authority joined forces with strong local partners, including Masons Travel , the Agriculture Department and Cat Rose to clean and maintain part of the La Gorge firebreak within Praslin National Park. 🌿

This first collaborative effort highlights the importance of partnerships in reducing fire risks, protecting biodiversity, and conserving our environment for the community.

A big thank you to everyone who contributed their time, effort, and support towards this important initiative. 💚

Update on the La Réserve Trail.

Today, we visited this trail located within an important KBA ( Key Biodiversity Area). It protects biodiversity, water resources, and unique ecosystems.

With support from Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust through the local NGO Green Generation is rehabilitating and restoring the trail.🌱

We also erected a new information board with support from the Ridge-to-Reef project.

🌿 Which Small Island Developing State has made the greatest global impact on biodiversity conservation and inspired young people the most?

According to the Independent School — the overall winner of the 2026 International Biodiversity Day Inter-School Public Speaking Competition — the answer is Cuba. 🇨🇺

Students highlighted the country’s strong commitment to protecting biodiversity and how conservation contributes to both the beauty of the island and the wellbeing of its people.

The second-best presentation focused on Fiji 🇫🇯, with students from Beau Vallon, commending the many local initiatives undertaken by Fijians to preserve and protect their rich biodiversity.

And what about Seychelles? 🇸🇨

Praslin Secondary School proudly showcased our island nation and its conservation achievements during the competition.

This was the first public speaking competition organised by the Ministry as part of activities commemorating International Biodiversity Day 2026, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education. Altogether, 8 schools participated in this inspiring event, demonstrating the passion and awareness of our youth towards biodiversity conservation and sustainable development.

👏 Congratulations to all participating schools and students for their outstanding presentations and commitment to protecting our planet.

🌍 Protecting Seychelles’ Marine Future

Stakeholders have had their final say on the proposed Aldabra Group Marine National Park, which will include Aldabra, Assomption, Astove and Cosmoledo — the largest marine national park in Seychelles, covering 45.3% of the country’s total marine protected areas. 🌊

While participants were able to review the document online, many chose to attend the consultation workshop organised by the project consultants, with support from Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust .

Through the valuable feedback of staholders and the public, the document will guide and sustain the governance of this unique marine area for years to come.

Following this final review, the draft document will be submitted to the Ministry before heading to Cabinet for approval.

Today, we celebrate World Turtle Day 🐢💚

Turtles and tortoises are an important part of Seychelles’ natural heritage.

Did you know that all sea turtles and tortoises in Seychelles are protected by law?

Together, we all have a role to play in protecting their nesting sites, reducing pollution, and respecting wildlife.

If you spot illegal activities involving turtles and/or tortoises, report it. Protect. Respect. Conserve.

Always on the move! 😎✨️

This week, our Minister, accompanied by Honorable Trevor Louise , Member of the The National Assembly of Seychelles for Bel Air, and the CEO of Landscape and Waste Management Agency, Shane Emilie, visited the viewpoint of Rochon Dam.

With its kiosk overlooking the dam and picturesque views of Victoria, the site remains a popular stop for both locals and visitors to . Unfortunately, the area has also been affected by illegal dumping and littering, impacting the beauty of this scenic location.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss the way forward for improving and protecting this important site.

What can we do to make Rochon Dam viewpoint better? Share your thoughts in the comments below.👇👇

Today, on International Day for Biological Diversity 🌿, we turned commitment into action through four important initiatives for Seychelles’ environment and communities.

✅ Signing of a new Memorandum of Understanding with the Baie Lazare Watershed Committee
✅ Official launch of the SMSP logo
✅ Reveal of the Key Biodiversity Area (KBA) for Grand Anse
✅ Beach clean-up activity in collaboration with Parley Seychelles ♻️

Together, these actions reflect our shared responsibility to protect biodiversity, strengthen partnerships, and build a more sustainable future for our islands. 🌍💚
