Asafo Flags Sharing the culture and story telling flags by the Fante people of Ghana 🇬🇭
(3)

Asafo flags, locally called "frankaa", are paraded on festive occasions by men's "military" companies among the Fante people of coastal Ghana. The imagery asserts the wealth and power of the company and challenges its rivals, often through an associated proverb. The flags were made from thin flimsy imported cloth and the effect of being hung outside for days at a time in all weathers and repeated

use in parades tends to mean that older pieces are often quite battered with numerous marks, holes and patches.

Kobina Badowah was one of the most well documented flag makers in Ghana from Kormantse NKUM and led the well-known workshop from 1935 to 2000.

Asafo flags play an important role in festivals, ceremonies, and community life, preserving Fante history, identity, and cultural values through generations of craftsmanship. Today, makers continue to safeguard this unique artistic tradition despite challenges in passing their skills on to younger generations. 🇬🇭
