AMBASSADOR LOLA AKANDE DELIVERS SPECIAL ADDRESS AT YORUBA DAY 2026 IN FINLAND

Her Excellency Ambassador Lola Akande delivered a special address at the 2026 Yoruba Day celebration held on Saturday, 29 August 2026, in Espoo, Finland, commending the Yoruba community for its efforts in preserving cultural heritage, promoting unity and strengthening community bonds. The event, organised by the Association of Yoruba Descendants in Finland (AYDF) in collaboration with the Yorubas in Pirkanmaa Association (YPA), was held under the theme, “Celebrating Culture, Heritage, and Community.”

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Lola Akande commended AYDF for its commitment to promoting cultural pride, unity and community development. She noted that the celebration exemplified enduring Yoruba values encapsulated in the concept of Ọmọlúàbí—integrity, respect, humility, responsibility and service—while underscoring that Nigeria’s rich cultural diversity remains a source of strength and a vital component of its national identity.

Ambassador Lola Akande further emphasised the importance of diaspora engagement and cultural diplomacy, noting their direct relevance to the Diaspora and Demography pillars of Nigeria’s 4D Foreign Policy framework. She encouraged Yoruba and other Nigerian community organisations in Finland to strengthen collaboration through the umbrella Association of Nigerian Community in Finland (ANCF) in order to promote greater cohesion and maintain a constructive and representative voice for the Nigerian community.

She also urged Nigerians resident in Finland to register with the Embassy to facilitate access to consular services and welfare support, particularly in preparation for her forthcoming official engagement with the Nigerian community in Finland.

The celebration brought together members of the Nigerian diaspora, community leaders, sister associations, Finnish partners and friends of Nigeria to celebrate Yoruba traditions, music, dance, fashion and cuisine, while strengthening solidarity and community bonds across Nigerian and African communities in Finland. Participants included representatives of Yorubas in Pirkanmaa, Yorubas in Uppsala, Sweden, the Delta Association in Finland, Noble Women of Finland, and the Anambra Association in Finland, among others.

The programme featured cultural heritage presentations, traditional dance performances, a fashion parade, community dialogues on identity and cultural preservation, traditional games, and an awards session recognising individuals for their contributions to community development.

Her Excellency’s participation in Yoruba Day 2026 reflects the Embassy’s commitment to promoting Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage as an instrument of cultural diplomacy, deepening engagement with Nigerians in the diaspora, and strengthening people-to-people relations between Nigeria, Finland and the wider Nordic region.

AMBASSADOR LOLA AKANDE RECEIVES YOUNG NIGERIAN INNOVATOR, PARTICIPATING AT THE 2026 STOCKHOLM JUNIOR WATER PRIZE INTERNATIONAL FINAL

The Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to Sweden, Her Excellency Mrs. Lola Akande, received Nigeria’s National Finalist, Mr. Chiedu Richards, and members of the Nigerian delegation who participated in the 2026 Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) International Final, held in Stockholm as part of World Water Week.

The Stockholm Junior Water Prize is an international competition for young people who develop innovative solutions to water-related challenges. National finalists from participating countries travel to Stockholm to present their projects before an international jury as part of World Water Week.

Welcoming the delegation, Ambassador Lola Akande commended the young Nigerian innovators for their creativity, scientific curiosity and commitment to developing solutions to real-world challenges. She particularly congratulated Mr. Richards, whose project, “Self-healing Intelligent Biofilter Water Purification System,” was recognised among the outstanding initiatives presented at the international competition.

The innovative project, jointly developed by two students from Prime Seed of Abraham High School, Ibusa, Delta State, explores the use of beneficial bacteria isolated from fermented oil bean to develop a biofilm capable of removing heavy metals and organic compounds from contaminated water. The system is designed to replenish and heal itself, offering a potentially sustainable approach to water purification.

The Ambassador noted that although Nigeria did not emerge as the overall winner, the recognition received by the project was a testament to the ingenuity and potential of Nigerian youth. She encouraged the students to view the experience as a beginning, urging them to continue asking questions, experimenting and developing solutions that can make a meaningful difference in their communities and beyond.

Emphasising the importance of creating opportunities for young people to develop their talents and contribute to national development, Her Excellency encouraged collaboration with Nigerian universities, research institutions, government agencies and the private sector to support further research, testing and refinement of the innovation.

She also highlighted the relevance of the project to Nigeria’s development priorities, particularly the need to expand access to safe and clean water and promote sustainable water management. In this regard, the Ambassador underscored that supporting young Nigerians in science, technology, research and innovation is consistent with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR and reaffirmed the Embassy’s commitment to initiatives that promote youth development and innovation.

As part of the engagement, Ambassador Akande presented Mr. Richards with a gift and a Letter of Commendation in recognition of his outstanding achievement and for representing Nigeria with distinction at the international competition. She also commended his school, teachers, parents and other stakeholders whose support contributed to his success.

The engagement underscores the Embassy’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria–Sweden cooperation in water management, sustainability, research, innovation, education and youth development, while showcasing the ingenuity and potential of Nigerian youth on the international stage.

Ambassador Lola Akande Meets Swedish Trade Commissioner

H.E. Amb. Lola Akande met with Ms. Marlena Batist Hager, Swedish Trade Commissioner in Lagos, on 25 August 2026 in Stockholm.

Discussions focused on deepening Nigeria–Sweden trade and investment relations across key sectors, including digitalisation, urban transportation, renewable energy, sustainable mining, healthcare and technology transfer.

Both sides agreed to strengthen coordination and pursue mutually beneficial economic partnerships, further advancing trade, investment and the broader commercial dimension of Nigeria–Sweden relations.

Embassy of Nigeria Partners with Afrikan Fusion Fest 2026 to Celebrate Africa’s Culture, Creativity and Opportunities

The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Stockholm partnered with the Convener of Afrikan Fusion Fest 2026 to host the third edition of the festival on 15 August 2026 at the Quality Hotel Globe, Stockholm, under the theme “Parade of Nations: The Global Stage.”

The festival brought together the Diplomatic Corps, the African diaspora, the business community, the creative sector and the general public to celebrate Africa’s rich cultural heritage while promoting innovation, entrepreneurship, trade and stronger connections with the wider global community.

The programme featured African fashion, arts, crafts and creative enterprises, alongside Business Hub discussions, wellness and digital wellness sessions, networking opportunities, and the recognition of three young innovators for their ground-breaking work in technology and innovation, creative industries and community-driven solutions.

In her remarks at the event, H.E. Lola Akande, Ambassador-Designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Kingdom of Sweden, with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdom of Denmark, the Republic of Finland and the Kingdom of Norway, highlighted Nigeria’s global cultural influence and the opportunities it creates for entrepreneurship, trade and investment. She emphasised that while culture can introduce people, partnerships should take the relationship further through business, technology, innovation and knowledge exchange.

Ambassador Akande noted that strengthening Africa–Nordic connections would be a central priority of her tenure, including through greater collaboration between African and Nordic businesses, knowledge and technology exchange, and platforms such as Afrikan Fusion Fest that can serve as bridges to long-term collaboration.

The partnership reflects the Embassy’s commitment to using cultural diplomacy to showcase Nigeria’s strengths, deepen diaspora engagement and build bridges with Swedish and Nordic stakeholders, while creating opportunities to advance trade, investment, innovation and people-to-people relations.

Meeting between Her Excellency Ambassador Lola Akande and Mr Johan Frisell, Head of Africa Department, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden

Amb. Lola Akande held a meeting with Mr Johan Frisell, Head of the Africa Department, Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Sweden, on 12 August 2026.

Discussions at the meeting centred on Her Excellency’s priorities and plans for her tenure, as well as opportunities for further deepening the longstanding and cordial relations between Nigeria and Sweden.

The meeting also identified areas of mutual interest for enhanced cooperation, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to advancing collaboration in these areas.

Her Excellency, Ambassador Lola Akande, Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to the Kingdom of Sweden, with concurrent accreditation to the Republic of Finland, the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Kingdom of Norway, on Monday, 13 July 2026, launched the Embassy's new website.
The new website offers a more modern, secure and user-friendly experience, with improved navigation, quicker access to consular and visa information, and direct links to relevant government agencies and Embassy services. The site also introduces an AI-based virtual assistant to help visitors navigate information more easily. It is designed to make it easier for Nigerians, prospective visitors, investors, and other stakeholders to access accurate information and engage with the Embassy efficiently.
The launch was attended by Embassy staff and the Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO), Sweden.

The team delivered an impressive performance, recording three victories and one draw to reach the semi-finals before narrowly bowing out to Morocco by a lone goal.
