Media, Management and Transformation Center - MMTC

Media, Management and Transformation Center - MMTC MMTC is a research center under Jönköping International Business School of Jönköping University. We take interest in both these perspectives.

Researching Digital Innovations and Business Renewal: Digitization has been changing the ways media are consumed and produced. The effects can be traced to various aspects of everyday life for consumers, firms, and other stakeholders in society. At the Media Management and Transformation Centre (MMTC), we take interest in the business implications of this development, including the market dynamics

, innovations and strategic responses in the media industries. The work at MMTC builds on the tradition at Jönköping International Business School to explore and excel in the areas of Renewal and Entrepreneurship. Beyond generating new insights in areas such as strategy, entrepreneurship, innovation, marketing, retailing and branding, MMTC aims to be a meeting place and provide services to both the academia, practitioners and the wider society. The center continuously offers programs for visiting scholars, conducts seminars and doctoral courses, and provides support and infrastructure to the European Media Management Association (emma). It is the home of the Journal of Media Business Studies – one of the main journals in the field. Scholars at MMTC regularly participate in the public debate and provide advisory services to government bodies, trade associations and companies. Since its launch in 2003, MMTC has been recognized as one of the most central academic institutions in the fields of Media Management and Media Economics both nationally and internationally. Media Management: On the one hand, legacy media have to respond to highly competitive markets characterized by speed, innovation and surprise. To react quickly, it is necessary for legacy media to transform business models, management and organizational structures, to resonate with digitized consumer cultures. On the other hand, media management is no longer exclusive to media firms: the need to understand the economics and management of digital media is increasingly evident in most industries and operating functions.

How much does a business's success depend on the entrepreneur—and how much on the environment around them?

On 2 June, MMTC member Daniel A. de los Ríos Pérez presented at an online conference, “Entrepreneurship Beyond the Entrepreneur” for CubaEmprende, an organisation that supports entrepreneurs in Cuba through training, advice, and networking opportunities.

Based on his research into entrepreneurial ecosystems, Daniel discussed how support networks, institutions, and the wider business environment shape entrepreneurial success. The session encouraged participants to consider entrepreneurship as something influenced not only by individuals, but also by the ecosystems in which they operate.

The event reflects MMTC’s focus on entrepreneurship and sustainable transformation, and the importance of connecting research with practice.

MMTC member Bryan Malki has presented his paper, "Audit Teams: A Systematic Review and Integrative Framework," at the EAA - European Accounting Association 48th Annual Congress in Prague.

The paper examines how audit teams function and how team dynamics influence audit outcomes. Based on a systematic review of 86 studies published between 1981 and 2024, the research demonstrates that audit team effectiveness is shaped not only by formal structures and expertise but also by leadership, communication, knowledge sharing, technology, and contextual factors.
By presenting audit teams as adaptive sociotechnical systems, the paper develops an integrative framework that explains how structural, behavioural, and technological dimensions interact to shape audit outcomes. The study also identifies important avenues for future research, including the impact of artificial intelligence, hybrid work environments, sustainability assurance, and professional judgment.

Bryan's research highlights one of MMTC's focus areas, Organisational transformation, and examines how organisations adapt to technological and societal changes. By exploring the interaction between people, technology, and organisational processes, the study offers valuable insights into the transformation of professional work within an increasingly digital environment.

This week's MMTC seminar welcomed Monica Porzionato, Postdoctoral Researcher at Copenhagen Business School, whose work explores affective approaches to strategic communication in both online and offline environments.

Drawing on her doctoral research, recent publications, and the INFLU-NORD project, Monica discussed how theories of affect and affective atmospheres can illuminate how communication sustains collective orientations, attachments, and forms of social life, particularly in the context of climate change communication and digital media environments.

New research from MMTC member Imran Ilyas explores the realities faced by immigrant entrepreneurs when building businesses in unfamiliar environments.

The article, “Strangers in a Strange Land: Exploring the Role of Individual-Level Liability of Foreignness in Immigrant Entrepreneurs’ Venture Failure”, investigates how the “liability of foreignness” can shape venture failure through challenges linked to networks, institutions, and cultural adaptation. By focusing on immigrant entrepreneurship, the study contributes important insights into entrepreneurship, inclusion, and global mobility.

Exploring new perspectives on consumer passion at MMTC
As part of the MMTC lunchtime seminar series, Luigi Servadio and Adele Berndt shared insights from their study “Passionate Collectors: The ‘Passive’ Transmission of Mundane Consumption."

Moving beyond conventional views of consumers as intentional and identity-driven, the research introduces a perspective grounded in non-representational marketing theory, in which passion is understood as a passifying force that affects and flows through people, objects and networks. Through a multi-method study of the Checkers Little Shop Minis campaign, the authors illustrate how collecting emerges through shared experiences, emotional intensity, and social dynamics.
The seminar highlighted how this approach contributes to rethinking the boundaries of marketing theory, particularly at the intersection of fandom and consumer culture.
Thank you to everyone who joined the discussion—your feedback helps shape this work as it develops toward publication.

In uncertain times, resilience matters more than ever!

At the IPSERA 2026 Conference in Helsinki, MMTC member Carla Gonçalves Machado chaired a session on Risk and Disruption and presented the competitive paper "Strategic Sourcing in an Age of Supply Chain Disruptions: An Analytic Case Study". This paper was co-authored with Carolina Belotti (University of Twente), Andreas Lindh, and Tim Svensson, Jönköping International Business School Alumni.

The paper highlights that supply chain resilience is built unevenly and over time: supplier diversification emerged as the strongest response, while formal risk planning, cross-functional governance, and digital visibility are still less institutionalised in organizations. A key takeaway is that simply recognizing vulnerability is insufficient; companies must redesign their sourcing routines before the next disruption occurs.
