Möt årets regissör av operan Fidelio - Lisa Charlotte Friederich!
Arbetet med operan pågår för fullt och vi ställde tre frågor till Lisa om Fidelio. Lisa bor i Berlin och därför är hennes svar på engelska.
What is Fidelio really about?
In Fidelio the personal and the political are combined in a powerful way: it is a love story that is fueled by the political circumstances it takes place in. A woman breaks free from every convention in order to achieve freedom: for herself, for her husband and for the political prisoners. I find this a very unique and timeless setup for an opera.
What touches you the most in Fidelio?
I’m touched by Leonore’s courage to think and do the unthinkable: dress up a as man, believe in the possibility to find a way against all odds. In a world that surrounds us with increasing complexity and multiple crises, Leonore to me is a beacon of hope, an example of a modern and clear mind that strives for a better world. In that sense, to me, she is a real heroine.
In what way is Fidelio relevant today?
Unfortunately, Fidelio hasn’t lost any of its relevance over there centuries: people are imprisoned for political reasons without trials, people are kept under horrifying conditions, people disappear and their loved ones are left with never healing wounds for the rest of their lives. From Syria, to Iran, to the military dictatorships in South America, to Belarus and the actions of Trump's ICE brigades, the unjust imprisonment of innocent people is, sadly, very present to this day.
